Most of them are non-sensical (like Eagle vs. Chang or Rolento vs. Hibiki) but some do have a story behind it. The Rugal vs. Guile intro is a reference to King of Fighters '94 boss scene where Rugal turned his defeated opponents into statues, and he had a statue that looked like Guile.

Doesn't it strike you how much more personality and style these characters exude compared to the way they're portrayed in current games? SFA, MVC, SF3, and this: so much personality shows off in the animations of those characters. Also, the dialogue was not completely watered down so that their characters were condensed to their most basic, almost one-dimensional attributes so they come off like YU-GI-oh characters instead of the ones we knew from the 90s
Still one of my favorite fighting games. There was just so many lil touches and bits of work put into it. Sure it might be unbalanced, but it was really fun.

@DanCiTi Rugal says, "Kimi no shini basho wa koko da" (Your dying place will be here). The statue is a reference to KoF '94 where there was a Guile statue in Rugal's stage (Rugal had statues of everyone he'd beaten, so it was like a lighthearted dig at Capcom).
Okay, I have played this game so many times in the arcades & at home, and there are so many intros in this vid, which I have never seen before (like Hibiki & Rolento). I guess the people (as well as myself) playing the game just kept on hitting the buttons & skipping the intro so as to get right to the fights. Great compilation here!
Cool! I used to put matches together just to see if they would start with a special intro! Some are obvious Ken/Ryu, Ryu/Sagat... Some are not! There are a few I have NEVER even seen before and I've had the game for over four years! My fav would be the Chun-Li/ Mai intro!

I like the 1st game better in terms of music menus character art backgrounds But the 2nd game had a better roster and I liked the 6 different grooves My team of Ryu n Terry was unstoppable

@InXaInMarine On KOF 94' on Rugal's Stage you could see that statue on the background. That is because on KOF lore Rugal turned their victims into statues, implying that Guile was defeated by Rugal by the time of KOF 94 or just to show some rivalry with Capcom :)

In KOF 94 when Rugal was the boss, his main schemes would include creating tournaments to fight and beat strong opponents, and then turn them into statues as trophies.
Bison vs Rugal and Kyo vs Iori gotta be the two most badass ones. Geese's "C'mon..." at Rock was pretty badass as well. ...and Guile vs Rugal is just plain wtf.

When Rugal defeats an opponent, he places their bodies inside statues. The Guile statue I guess is to show that in his opinion the match is already over for Guile. But Guile disagrees.
