For days we have been arduously scouring the rivers of the Ugab & Huab , for the elusive desert elephants …we have finally found them in the Hoanib River.
These giants of Hoanib have chosen the Namib.
The desert elephants not a genetically distinct species to the African elephants bit have adapted to their unique habit.
What makes them distinct is their unique social structure and their ability to adapt to the extreme temperatures and rocky plains of Namibia's north-west Kunene region. This region is arid and receives a mere 50-150mm of rain annually.
There are approximately only 150 elephants remaining in the Ugab, Huab, Hoarusib, Hoanib, and Uniab riverbeds.
The population has sharply declined over the years, due to the increase of human activity which interferes with the elephants migratory paths.
For sustenance they rely on the Ana and camel thorn trees and traverse by far the most extended distances of any elephant population searching for life sustaining water.
As a new day is upon us …we peep out of our nest and the Hoanib river reveals its secret.
The landscape is bathed in soft golden light, a reminder that even in the harshest and most remote landscapes, the beauty of nature’s daily renewal is a gift to be cherished.
