‘Capitalism without competition is not capitalism.’ - The hidden reason economic inequality is on the rise is right in front our noses.
» Subscribe to NowThis: go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe
Denise Hearn is the co-author of 'The Myth of Capitalism.' The financial expert explains in this new video op-ed how capitalism and the American dream is largely a myth. Additionally, inequality in America is on the rise as mega corporations take over the economy. 'Competition is dying in America,' Hearn argues, 'And capitalism without competition is not capitalism.' Hearn goes on to explain that it's happening across industries and it's resulting in the appearance of choice, but in reality there are only one or two options. This is called industry concentration and it leads to higher prices. Hearn points to President Reagan's deregulations which allowed companies to merge and combine at unprecedented rates. Hearn says, 'If you're wondering why inequality is so high, the wealthy own the toll roads of American life and everyone else must pay to use them.'

Do not worry to much for us old man Larry (with kind respect). Our generation is not so blind yet it sometimes looks for the truth in the mist of too abondant information. It appears clear for a lot that globalization transformed companies and economies in a big Monopoly. Also rich are not so noble these days. Actually the game is now just to big to fit in US alone and huge companies must also fight international to generate growth. You probably noticed the friction with China, Europe, etc.. I am from France but know America pretty well for living in SC for 5 years at a time foreigners were not ennemies of American jobs). The situation is clear also to us in France but every attempts against some big corporation was qualified as socialism. I am still young and ready to point this politicaly, the only problem is to fight this monopoly without revolutions and wars. The last time we had to do this in France was 1789 by cutting a king's head. Only now it is not a single head but more like mythological 9 heads hydra. This Is the tricky problem.

They almost got it. She said that the capitalism we have *now* is creating the societal issues, and that all we have to do is go back to the *original* capitalist system. She fails to realise that the capitalism we have now is not changed, but only an evolved form of itself. It is inevitable that several corporations and individuals control the daily well-being of an average working person, when they only care about profits. The only way out of this, where I think most people come to realise nowadays, is a widespread revolution. Reforms don't work, as shown in history.

In a way, it points out how easily unregulated capitalism can eat itself. I see your original point, and it's an interesting twist. Capitalism does have its benefits, but it requires proper regulation to prevent companies from completely wiping out any competition. The decline in startups is a huge warning sign, and I hope the US can successfully roll back years of deregulation and create an actually favourable economic environment for smaller businesses to grow and have a fighting chance.

Marx also created an idealistic system that ended up enslaving half the world under dictatorships. Also he didn't predict it, he was alive during the first wave of monopolies and crony capitalism in the late 1800s. Anti-Trust legislation in the early 1900s solved most of the issues he complained about, but Reagan came in and reversed it because "the free market corrects itself".

@@paulpierantozzi Karl marx cannot be blamed for the ideologies that were brought forward by leaders such as Lenin and Mao, Karl Marx ideas was that of a utopia that worked to abolish the class system and to improve the quality of life of the common man These ideas were manipulated to the advantage of the leaders in order to form the dictatorships you talk about, that's why there is a distinction between marxist, leninist and maoist communism. Marx was not a politician but a philosopher who saw that the capitalistic system needed reforms before it went out of hand and to that extent he was right
@paulpierantozzi
@paulpierantozzi 4 года назад
Melvin Mathew The key word here is “utopia”. His ideas have never worked in practice because they didn’t account for human nature. If you hand over all the power to the government it will become a dictatorship. Private property is the only way to ensure any freedom.
@minamimoto2193
@minamimoto2193 4 года назад
@@paulpierantozzi Several things: 1) Marx never advocated to give all power to the state. Communism is moneyless, classless, and stateless. Clearly, neither China nor the Sovjet Union fulfilled that. Engels had actually predicted a development like the Soviet Union, stating that a system in which the state takes power for itself is not communist in nature, and is instead a 'state capitalism', in which the state itself becomes the only and all-powerful capitalist. 2) A utopia can be fulfilled. It's only a utopia until it becomes real, and until that day the ideal can have a powerful effect on those striving for that better world. 3) Human nature is based on the circumstances. Extensive psychological experiments have shown the impact a human's upbringing, socialization, and their social and working environment have on their behavior. It is no surprise that humans tend to be egotistical and uncooperative -- capitalism is incentivizing just such a kind of behavior. The current system determines the current 'human nature'. However, at an underlying level, humans are a fundamentally social species. Cooperation is how we have gotten this far. 4) Freedom is always relative. In Capitalism, freedom is dependent on how much money you have. Sure, theoretically you have all kinds of freedom, but in reality, only the richest can afford to act on that. The more freedom of capital you hand to the richest, the more they will be able to restrict the freedom of the working class. Capitalism, in short, allows for the concentration of freedom in the hands of the few. Communism, on the other hand, was created to prevent exactly such a control by means of property. 5) Any kind of limit on capitalism as enforced by the state will only serve to prolong capitalism indefinitely. It prevents the system from tearing itself apart, but it doesn't address the fundamental issues and injustices that have led to the problem in the first place. As such, the state protects capitalism both from the working class and from itself. Preventing monopolies is not a solution. Ending capitalism is.
@paulpierantozzi
@paulpierantozzi 4 года назад
@@minamimoto2193 1) without money or class how do you determine who gets what in a society? How does one distribute resources? No matter how many times you want to run the simulation, communism will always end up with somebody distributing things to the people. Whoever that is has an enormous amount of power over the population and thus is doomed to be a dictator. 2) Communism is idealistic, in the real world it never works. Never has, never will. We had 100 years to find that out and none of the countries that tried it ended up successful. 3) Human nature is the same no matter where you go. If you live in a society that gives you everything you need but never promises to give you more if you are successful, nobody would ever try to be successful. You create a state where nobody works, nobody has incentive to take risks. This is why in a communist country technology is stagnant unless it is funded by the state. 4) You aren't entirely right on this one either. In capitalism money is earned by contributing to society. Providing a useful good or service. In return you are rewarded with the freedom to do what you want and to own your own property. When it works it works extremely well and it is why a capitalistic country always innovates faster than any other government structure. In communism everything is evenly distributed, thus everyone is poor except for those that do the distributing. In communism things never improve because no extra incentive is given to those who do better work than others. Therefore things only ever get worse. 5) This argument is such BS. Regulation of a capitalist economy is how we avoid it's shortcomings. For instance, clean water bills to prevent dumping chemicals in waterways. Of course is prolongs the system, that means the regulation is working if it prevents the collapse of society. I mean what is the alternative? Hand over all our land, property, and savings to the government? They already do a terrible job handling social security and welfare, why should I give them any more money?

At 2:22, "companies become price makers and dictate what you pay for their goods or services" is completely incorrect. Prices are dictated by supply and demand, or more specifically, what the market is willing to pay for a product or service. Therefore, if customers are willing to pay over $1000 for the most recent iPhone or Samsung, it sets the price. If customers are willing to pay over $40/mo for an unlimited plan or $70/mo for cable, it sets the price. If you don't like those prices, ask yourself "do I really need the most recent phone?" "Can I get by with a landline or a much cheaper cellphone plan?" "Is cable in the home really necessary?" If enough people answer yes to these questions, prices inevitably come down.
@paulpierantozzi
@paulpierantozzi 4 года назад
The issue presented in this video is that with so little competition for basic goods consumers often do not have a choice and thus prices can be set to whatever these companies want. A good example is comcast internet. In many cities there is no option between service providers so when you start experiencing back service or your prices go up for the exact same service (this happened to be several times) you cannot do anything about it but move to a different city. Internet is much cheaper in areas of the country where multiple ISPs are available.
@P4DDYW4CK
@P4DDYW4CK 4 года назад
The problem with competition is that someone always wins and someone always loses. And then the winners buy the losers. Capitalism tends towards concentration. If this is the natural result of competition, I think, as companies grow, they should be required to put more stakeholders on their boards - workers, consumers, suppliers. That way competition may be low, but all stakeholders in society still benefit. Prices can remain low, wages can remain livable. Until we have another solution, we’ll endlessly be playing whack-a-mole as companies recombine as they naturally do in the world of competition.

The thing with capitalism is there’s a large percentage of people that are limited. They don’t have the capabilities of others. That’s where we blame the system. Yet the problem is equality. People want to be free but their successes finically undermine others. The solution isn’t socialism but a better regulation of capitalism. In theory you need traits from communism socialism and capitalism for society to function in balance with every person. With all of their natural capabilities and talents.

The definition of capitalism is not competition or choice but the existence of the investor. An investor not unlike a mafia boss skims all the surplus at the end of the business year. The biggest threat posed by the investor to our survival is that he demands exponential growth of profits. This means that businesses don't produce stuff to satisfy a real demand but to make a buck - at the peril of the destruction of nature.
