Decades after capitalism seemed to have triumphed over socialism, politicians are once again arguing about the merits and drawbacks of these opposing economic systems. Why are we still having this debate? Andy Puzder, former CEO of the parent company of Hardee's and Carl's Jr., explains the misconceptions that keep the debate alive.

Script:
Capitalism versus socialism. We can sum up each economic system in one line:
Capitalism is based on human greed. Socialism is based on human need.
Right?
No. Wrong.
So wrong, it’s exactly backwards. And I’ll prove it to you.
Been on Amazon lately? Each of the thousands of products Amazon offers represents the work of people who believe they have something you want or need. If they’re right, they prosper. If they’re wrong, they don’t.
That’s how the free market works. It encourages people to improve their lives by satisfying the needs of others. No one starts a business making a thing or providing a service for themselves. They start a business to make things or provide services for others.
I speak from personal experience.
When I was the CEO of the company that owns Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurant chains, we spent millions of dollars every year trying to determine what customers wanted. If our customers didn’t like something, we changed it-and fast, because if we didn’t, our competitors would (pun intended) eat us for lunch.
The consumer-that’s you-has the ultimate power. In effect, you vote with every dollar you spend.
In a socialist economy, the government has the ultimate power. It decides what you get from a limited supply it decides should exist.
Instead of millions of people making millions of decisions about what they want, a few people-government elites-decide what people should have and how much they should pay for it. Not surprisingly, they always get it wrong. Have you ever noticed that late-stage socialist failures always run out of essential items like toilet paper?
Of course, this isn’t a problem for those who have the right connections with the right people. Those chosen few get whatever they want. But everyone else is out of luck.
Venezuela, once the richest country in South America, is the most recent example of socialism driving a prosperous country into an economic ditch. Maybe you think it’s an unfair example. I’m not sure why, but okay. We’ll ignore the fact that leftist activists celebrated it as a great socialist success-right up until it wasn’t.
But what about Western European countries? Don't they have socialist economies? People seem pretty happy there. Why can’t we have what they have-free health care, free college, stronger unions?
Good question. And the answer may surprise you.
There are no socialist countries in Western Europe. Most are just as capitalist as the United States. The only difference-and it’s a big one-is that they offer more government benefits than the U.S. does.
We can argue about the costs of these benefits and the point at which they reduce individual initiative, thus doing more harm than good. Scandinavians have been debating those questions for years. But only a free-market capitalist economy can produce the wealth necessary to sustain all of the supposedly “free stuff” Europeans enjoy. To get the “free stuff,” after all, you have to create enough wealth to generate enough tax revenue to pay for everything the government gives away.
Without capitalism, you’re Venezuela.

It's to ease the people in that country into believing that the government will provide for them. Until the government comes under dictatorship, which is why every socialist nation collapses quicker than non-socialist. The reason is because the wealth is equally distributed into the working class. Which leads to that country going bankrupt. The later problem with socialism is that without the change to pure communism, there will be no government.

The people selling this are refusing to tell America what I just told you. Ask any of them where the money comes from and you'll never get a straight answer. 6. Give government total control and power over program like this and you'll probably never get it back even if it goes horribly wrong. 7. Look at Venezuela. It was once the richest country and South America and now is in ruins because of socialist policies. Poverty and poor health care are what they got for those promises of free stuff.

Trucker_Pete Bernie sanders sometimes words things in a bad way but the actual policies he wants implemented are exactly the same as a social democracy like the Scandinavian countries. The Scandinavian countries have higher social mobility than the US, their markets also rank as more free than the US market. Being a social democracy doesn't mean you throw away the good things about capitalism. You can have a strong social safety net, universal education, medicare for all and still have a market economy. One thing doesn't take out the other which is exactly why America should elect Bernie Sanders as their next president. Anyone that screams "SOCIALISM" at bernie Sanders is a complete idiot with zero knowledge of what they are talking about. Sadly most Americans are complete idiots which is why the US is the ONLY modern country that doesn't provide healthcare to all it's citizens.

islam is best First of all, you cannot live without working - you can’t exactly get the necessities for life otherwise. Sure, you could use social security benefits, but at that point you’re just leeching off of others’ work. Second, socialism in its only current implementable form (communism) always makes people worse off than before in the long run. Look at the historical example of the USSR, as well as the present one of Venezuela. Communism fails as the state controls everything in order to maintain the state of socialism within the country - and since government elites are often corrupt they’ll use that power to hog most of the money for the state. Hence, how people were super poor in those countries. Also, slavery is morally repulsive no matter the economic system. We in America ditched slaves ~200 years ago for good reason - we only did it later than other countries as some morally bad people in the South decided to fight to keep them.

1. Abolition of private property and the application of all rent to public purpose. The using of a Federal Reserve (central bank) CREDIT (debt/IOUs) is NOT payment of debt at law, merely discharge in civil law: admiralty, UCC & equity. The voluntary choice to use & be dependent upon the Federal Reserve is via: 14th Amendment federal citizenship status (1868), House Joint Resolution 192; Senate Report 43: 73rd Congress 1st Session April 1933; Stanek v. White; Legal title to possession and use of property via discharge with Fed Res IOUs, which is a loss of real private ownership called Allodial title or Allodium, which is both legal (possession and use) and equitable (beneficial interest) titles combined. Various zoning, school & property taxes due to mere legal titles. Also the Bureau of Land Management, Land Use Fees. Zoning - Model ordinances proposed by Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover widely adopted. Supreme Court ruled "zoning" to be "constitutional" in 1921. Private legal title holders of property required to get permission from government relative to the use of their property. Federally owned lands are leased for grazing, mining, timber usages, the fees being paid into the U.S. Treasury. Quote below is excerpted from: 73D CONGRESS, 1st Session SENATE DOCUMENT No. 43 April. 1933 [after the US corporation declares bankruptcy] “The ultimate ownership of all property is in the State; individual so-called “ownership” is only by virtue of Government, i.e. law, amounting to mere user*; and use must be in accordance with law, and subordinate to the necessities of the State.” 2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. The 16th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, 1913, The Social Security Act of 1936; Joint House Resolution 192 of 1933; Victory Tax Act of 1942 and various State "income" taxes. The US calls it "paying your fair share" which equates to the communist mantra: “from each according to his ability, to each according to their need”. 3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance In the US its called Federal & State estate Tax (1916); or reformed Probate Laws, and limited inheritance via arbitrary inheritance tax statutes. (not fully implemented, but close) 4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels The US calls it: the 14th Amendment; government (IRS) seizures, tax liens, Public "law" 99-570 (1986); Executive order 11490, sections 1205, 2002 which gives private land to the Department of Urban Development; the imprisonment of "terrorists" and those who speak out or write against the "government" (1997 Crime/Terrorist Bill); or the IRS confiscation of property without due process. 5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly. The US calls it the Federal Reserve System (a private corporation) which is a credit/debt system nationally organized by the Federal Reserve act of 1913. All local banks are members of the Fed system, and are regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). House Joint Resolution 192; Senate Report 43, 73rd Congress 1st Session April 1933. 6. Centralization of the means of communication and transportation in the hands of the State The US calls it the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated through the ICC act of 1887, the Commissions Act of 1934, The Interstate Commerce Commission established in 1938, The Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Communications Commission, and Executive orders 11490, 10999, as well as State mandated driver's licenses and Department of Transportation regulations. There is also the postal monopoly, AMTRACK and CONRAIL 7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State, the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan. The US calls it corporate capacity, The Desert Entry Act and The Department of Agriculture. As well as the Department of Commerce and Labor, Department of Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Mines, National Park Service, and the IRS control of business through corporate regulations, title 26 USC. Public Business, Corporate Capacity, Commerce, mercantilism. 8. Equal liability of all to labor. Establishment of Industrial armies, especially for agriculture. The US calls it the Social Security Administration and The Department of Labor. The National debt and inflation caused by the communal bank has caused the need for a two "income" family. Woman in the workplace since the 1920's, the 19th amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, assorted Socialist Unions, affirmative action, the Federal Public Works Program and of course Executive order 11000. And I almost forgot...various Equal Rights Acts; Corporate Capacity and commerce 9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the population over the country. The US calls it the Planning Reorganization act of 1949 , zoning (Title 17 1910-1990) and Super Corporate Farms, as well as Executive orders 11647, 11731 (ten regions) and Public "law" 89-136. Conagra, ADM, Cargill, Monsanto, Dupont, Corporate Capacity, Commerce 10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production People are being taxed to support what the US body politic calls 'public' schools, which train the young to work for the communal debt system. The US also calls it the Department of Education, the NEA, Outcome Based "Education" and Common Core.

@@joshuagoldglancz7144 cuz we tax consumption and income taxes very high. Everything has a VAT of between 10 and 25%. Petrol is taxed over 100%, making the taxes on fuel higher than the market price itself. Income is taxed progressively, meaning if you make over $100 000, suddenly you pay 53% of all income earned over that bracket. Then you have certain counties that have property tax. And we used to have an inheritance tax and wealth tax, but I'm not entirely sure if we still have those. Taxes are also included in everything we buy, and automatically paid before we get our salary, so we don't really have to "do" or "pay" the taxes the way Americans have to, we just check everything is right. And we can also chose to pay more or less taxes, and then get the money back or have to pay more back depending on the right amount. There's even an option to voluteerably send in more taxes than you're supposed to, without getting any paid back, but only morons do that lol. Then there are deductibles which reduces the tax or gets you more paid back when tht is due. So all in all it's a mixed economy where corporations have a lot of freedom to establish themselves and pay a decently low amount of taxes, but they have to pay high salaries, follow strict worker rights regulations and not pollute etc.

The gap that we have now was much closer 80-90 years ago. Both Western Europe and Eastern Europe were equally affected by the war, however nobody can deny that Western Europe developed tremendously after the war, while Eastern Europe remained behind. As for the healthcare and quality of life, on average a socialist country had between 5-10 years less lifespan than people living in a capitalist country. The healthcare system in Western Europe is much better than that of Eastern Europe. This is a fact all residents in Eastern Europe can tell you. As for the wealth gap, the proletariat wasn't happy because most people were equally poor. The nomenclature was still being showered in riches and wealth because they ran the country and the supreme leader's authority derived, like in any dictatorship, from the support of the oligarchy surrounding him. As you see Kim Jong Un with expensive watches, eating Western top quality food, driving expensive cars and all that, the situation was the same with the leaders in other communist countries. @@Kalimdor199Menegroth Lol I am from Eastern Europe and I know how much things improved for the lower classes under socialism. Of course the begining was hard and not insignificant amount of people were hurt or killed for resisting collectivisation or indirectly damaged by the expropriation of their lands and resources, but the lives saved by that very system outnumber them greatly. Furthermore in Bulgaria most serous problems we faced were social not economical and had much more to do with the global state of politics than with collective ownership of the means of production. Still things like religious suppression and forced renamings are legitimate criticisms of the regime, but not the economic system itself. It can be criticised in more nuanced ways. Admittedly we had tremendous support from USSR but even accounting for that socialism improved our quality of life much faster than capitalism is trying to right now after crashing economically most countries in Easter Europe during the "democratization" that crippled our productive potential. The 5-10 years statistic you mentioned is either comparison of lifespans today between equally wealthy countries with and without socialist past or between socialist and capitalist countries with different level of GDP. I'm obviously not 100% sure what you are refering to but I know from personal experience what it means to have reliable free healthcare and what it means for the continuation your very life to be comodified and priced as a product.

@@user-qi7xx5ih6z From Eastern Europe as well, and compared to the 1920s and 1930s, the situation worsened under the communist regime here. The lower classes, although they were not rich during pre-communist times, they fared still better as they were provided land after World War 1, land which was taken away by the communists, producing the 1950s famine. By taking away the land the peasants had, they not only pauperized the peasantry, forcing them to work in urban factories, they produced an urban supply chain issue which affected the country well into the 1960s. The less I speak about the 1980s deprivations and the default we escaped in 1979, the better. No lives were saved by the communist system, because no lives were endangered in the first place. They improved the lives of the few at the cost of the many. They made everyone equally miserable and the only period of relative economic stability was in the 1970s and that was due to loans. When the regime was no longer capable of paying back the loans during the oil crisis, it subjected the population to a period of starvation so that the leader can pay the country debt he himself took. I am speaking about Romania here. Bulgaria probably had a different path, but in general Bulgaria had it worse than Romania. And it emerged even poorer after communism than Romania. At least Romania opposed USSR plan of turning the economy into an agrarian one and focused some investments into the industry. Still, as things are today, they are WAY better than what happened during communism, by a long shot. Even the most poor people today live roughly the same lives as the middle class under communism.

Completely wrong. Business are there to make money. Maybe they start out wanting to help others, but later on almost all companies instead try to figure out how to profitize every last bit from their product. And they need to. If they don't, their competition will most likely crush them. Greed is the reason why most other systems fail. It powers capitalism. Here's a question for you, why do advertisements exist if companies only intend to provide services to customers? And why are most advertisements engineered to play on people's bad habits so they are more likely to try it, instead of just presenting themselves as an option and leaving the user to actually choose. Why do some manifacturers make products intentionally break down after a certain amount of usage? It's because that makes things more profitable. If you're in this world with only the intention to provide for people, you likely won't make it anywhere. I don't think we have any system that is better right now. But don't mispresent capitalism. It is quite dirty.

You dont know what is scialism... . I am copy my comment to you. sure, but it is a lie, why most biggest companies tell to you what you need. What is the neuromarketing? Capitalism oriented to capital not to society, socialism orient to society and not to capital. I dont know what happens with idea of socialism in USA, but soialism it is not what you saw in video. Let me explain what I mean, when company can do it somthid fot more money, that company will do it, and dos't metter what happen with peoples. For example Johnsonʼs Baby Powder, that company didnt care of your needs, that company care of capital. 40 years of lie. Who knows how many companies still lie. Why thanks for MacDonalds and Coca Cola and others companys so many USA peolpe became so fat? They are dont care about your needs they are try play with your needs for their capital and dont care about cocial. And if they can they will be lie to you, like USA goverment when they need come to Iraq they did it with fake proof of chemical weapon in Iraq. So they play with your mind they spend for reserch your needs not for you, they do it for new better lie for increase their money. In socialism you cant do somthing bad for social, for example in USSR goverment cared about quality of goods and foodm because if soviet people will have problems with heals, then goverment must heal them. So in another words, goverment responsability of medicine and of food, and of goods, and this is reason why goverment dont did it somthing bad for soviet piople. In socialism, society more important than one human. And if 1 crazy person say "i think we have 4345 genders", society say to him "proof it or shut up". In socialism, the part of society cannot be more important than the whole society. I dont know what really happen with socialism idea in USA, you are do not know what is socialism. In Stalin economy, goverment control only inmportant companies (this is about 20% of all companies, but these companies produce more than 80% of the country's GDP) and make plan for them, and the other 80% companies can produce other products, making up their more current plans (such companies belonged to the workers and were called artels).More modern style Stalin economy using right now China, when government control only important, key companies. USSR losing Stalin economy when came Khrushchev, after Khrushchev we see not a socialism it is more look like idiotism (because thanks for Khrushchev our govement need makes plan for all goods, and that was time when no one have computers for calculates plans, so you can image how smart and corrects plans was be). PS sorry my english not well UPD: Venezuela, sure. Why USA bloks money of venezuela government, like a 30 billions dollars. And why your capitalism doesn't work in Mexico? And what happened in Livia. Sure because when you open your native market, big compynies kill your small native compynies. And China not open market for USA and China now stronger than USA. Gorbachev trust to USA and destroy USSR and after him comming El'cin and they are bilding new Russia with USA consalting. And After that criminals coming to russian streets and oligarchs coming to goverment. Capitalism can worked when we have not big USA trans national companies and banks, but after that you cant create new market. Avtor video, I know you think that was smart video, but it is not. Capitalism it is power of money and banks, socialism it is power of society. Capitalism it is dictatorship of Fed reserve system, banks and big companies, they are play with your mind. And that guy nothing say about china, nothing.

@@user-fe9mc2bb9f I know you must be someone that received benefits from Stalin and his successors. But the truth still remains that Capitalism is the only economic system that works in today's world. When you talk about Johnson Baby satisfying their needs, you are wrong. It is the people that want and buy Johnsons products. If the people decided that they do not want Johnson products, Johnson will make losses and shut down. But lets say Johnson was in the Soviet Union. Even if people did not want it, they would be forced to buy it and Johnson would be supported by the government. The other totally absurd point you made about McDonalds making Americans fat. It is so wrong that I wondered if you passed high school. McDonalds does not have a moral responsibility towards you. It is not their responsibility to say that you are fat and that you should lower your weight. It is your responsibility. If you are so concerned about becoming fat, go instead to the Vegetable Market instead of McDonalds. There is a word for this and it is called INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM. You are free to choose where you go, what you buy, which brand you buy and if you and a lot of people don't like something you have the power to not buy it and close down that company. I know free doctors, free school and free food is all that you want. But if your ambition is life is just to eat until food runs out, then please, Venezuela welcomes you. The reason why socialism failed in the '90s is because of the lack of income from the good products, while the west made a bad product on purpose to sell more, no wonder their enconomy crashes every 10 years.

BS! US, inc. adopted all TEN PLANKS into its civil laws by the end of FDR's NEW DEAL era: 1.

America is actually a combination of capitalist and socialist policies. We should always remain more capitalist than socialist, but as it stands, public school, emergency services, road maintenance, etc. are all maintained under a socialist system. I stated this in my reply to the video; it’s about using each to its strengths. By far capitalism is better in most instances because it works on human instinct. Socialism should be applied to things that are basic human needs because that’s where it works most efficiently. G Dante G Dante It reduces CEOs personal profits. Republicans economic policies are based on Trickle down economics or/and free market. Trickle down: if the gov doesn’t tax or regulate corporations, the corporations will make more money, and CEOs will “bring down the wealth” into the workers. This is believing that CEO and corporations want to give their workers more money (the man in the video is Hardees CEO, and he is very much against raising the minimum wage) and not give them to themselves or their investors. Free Market: is based on the “invisible hand”, this states that the economy will self regulate, (didn’t work during the Great depression or Recession) Also they claim that the market self regulates, but give bailouts to corporations when they fail and declare bankrupt. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world because they barely pay taxes, uses government resources and money, and they pay their workers the minimum. Even Trump has called out Amazon: www.cnbc.com/2020/04/07/trump-blames-internet-companies-like-amazon-for-postal-service-demise.html How is the wealth supposed to “Trickle Down” if CEOs won’t pay their workers more, and how is the Market supposed to less regulate when if a corporation fails the gov bails them out. Food for thought: A common argument for capitalism is that you vote with your dollar in the economy, but everyone still remains equal because anyone can technically progress based on their level of work. But, even if this were true, (which it really isn't, but for the sake of argument I will say it is) that means that even then there is inherently a built in system where some people are worth more than others. Because even if you control the market with your dollar by "voting", the more dollars you have the more you matter then other people. In fact, inequality is quite literal then because a person with one dollar has only one "vote" while a person with 100 dollars has 100 votes, so the person with 100 dollars is thereby worth 100x more than the person with only one. In other words, the more money you have, the more votes you have, the more you matter than anyone who has less. Classic example of inequality. Sure, people can vote with their dollar, whatever. But what happens when a system allows people with an overwhelming amount of votes to vote in their own best interest, they will do so without hesitation. If a person were to think critically on the subject, you can see why people like myself desire Socailism, because we can recognize the contradiction presented by arguments like this. Not that anyone in this comments section is going to be here for a reasonable conversation, and I definitely expect to be harassed, I thought I would lay out this idea in a way that would allow some people to see the reverse. Anyway, cue the angry mobs of group-think.

A dollar is not just a dollar and a vote is just not a vote. A dollar and a vote represent value in a person, place, or thing. @DancingMonkey018
@DancingMonkey018 4 года назад
@squadronofficer 69 I never said it was better than the free market? In fact, my comment was simply giving the definition of Socialism Because your comment was very snarky "enlighten me on what you think it means" like it's really a hard question to answer - literally just type "Socialism" into Google and there's the answer. Which is why it's so hilarious that PragerU can't ever seem to define Socialism properly Oh and for the record, Socialism was never thought of as a replacement of the free market, Socialism is the replacement of Capitalism. And yes, I think Socialism is better than Capitalism
