My first piano favorite, Nola. Didn’t think I would ever find it, especially on a player piano. We had one similar to this one when I was 14 yrs. old. 1953. My Aunt use to play the sheet music at Woolworths 5&dime in Downtown Portland ,Oregon. I could listen to piano being played all day long and learned how to play this piece. This would be a good piece for Stephanie Trick and Her Husband ,Paola to perform. Wish I still had a player piano. 🎶♥️🎶
The song my grandmother Nellie always played first when she sat down at the big piano. My best friend Ron Trotta, 3-time world champion old-time piano player, says rather fondly that this song has "no off ramp" :-)
thank you. my name is Nola, and I danced to it when I was little, at a dancing concert. Told there were no words. Now, I know there are words, and thank you for playing this tune.
You are welcome, This is an 'intermezzo' style arrangement. These types of arrangements often were played in breaks during the reel changes in the early days.
Yes, it is one of my favorites..and one has to appreciate Arndt's real talents, even though most arrangements do not do him justice If his life had not been cuyt short, no telling where his music would have gone...
I LOVE this tune. I had a friend a long time ago that had a player piano in his house. He had this tune and played it for me. I have loved it eversince. Great sound!!!
This roll has drawn an amazing response from Europe.... I never would have figured, even though I love the roll myself.... Thanks for your kind comments.
I love this arrangement - wonderful embellishments while being true to the original. I'd love to get the score if one exists. This would be a blast to play with another pianist.
@PonyTails55 True... true.... first the piano with it's live sound and expression of music that drew people together with a real melody and counter melody line...and then came the phonograph... a scratchy imitation of the the live music... and then the radio, which intially drew people together with hollow sound, but later sent them to their rooms to listen to a transistorized version under their pillow.... and now the smart phone .. oh well ... this is progress I guess
Thank you Anthony. No, actually this is a trademark piano built by the Aeolian Corp. in NY. USA. Very few of my selections are actually Duo Art rolls made for this piano. Rather, because of the musical tastes that I am trying to present here, are the more common standard 88 note piano rolls which were able to be played on this piano. Because this is only a truly 1/2 Duo Art in function, I am able to express these rolls as desired when I play (pump) them. Thank you for your kind comments.
Hello - Thank you for your excellent Duo-Art selections, on a fine old Stroud piano. Can you tell me, was this from the old Stroud Piano Company, of Woodchester, Stroud, Glos? I hope so. I knew that they were planning a player, but not that it had ever reached production. The company is of course now deceased, but was still active in piano-building into the late 70s when I was connected with them and took an interest in the company's history. Thanks and best wishes - Anthony, Glos.
This takes me back. When I was in boy's school, one of the priests I had as a teacher could pound this out on an old upright piano in the basement of the gym. How we used to beg him to play it. And we said we loved the Beach Boys. We did, but we loved ragtime, but didn't know it.
Thanks Steven, I have had many great comments on this roll. I am about to sell it, but maybe I can get someone to scan it to midi and then maybe with the software available it could actually be turned into a score. I will see if someone is interested.
