This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Captain America: Civil War (2016) kicking off Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by the Russo brothers, this film was a gut punch to my love of these people. I didn't want to have to pick between Team Tony and Team Steve! That said, I absolutely loved the story in this MCU movie and I loved the conflict. I found myself siding with both at times, but more importantly understanding both sides. It was awesome to see Ant-Man/Scott again and also meet Black Panther/T'challa. I can't wait to continue through this phase. I can't believe Kevin Fegie and his MCU writers actually believe a GPA of 3.6 is high and that Pete would be in a Algebra class(his genius level I.Q.) rather than Trigonometry or a College level math class. I learned Algebra in 6th grade and in High School a GPA of 4.1.6 . So compared to that kid killed in Socovia and Peter, I'm on a Nicholas Tesla genius level.😂

I believe both sides were right/wrong, tony knew the consequences of working on your own because of his movies, and Steve who was recently on the shield/hydra event on the winter soldier movie knew what working for the government would imply, both sides had their reasons, valid reasons, to think they were right, and that's why I love this movie more than the comic it was based on

Most people didn't realize that the major airport battle wasn't the civil war... It was in the missile silo, when Zemo showed Tony the video. That's when ALL the passion of a war spilled out.

To be fair Cap felt how strong he was and how durable he was so he determined that a full force blow wouldn't injure him a lot.

It is kind of a small throwaway line that no one ever seems to catch, when Tony makes that sarcastic comment about his father only mentioning Steve a couple thousand times. Tony must've had a BITTER resentment for Steve growing up. And that probably had a hand in shaping his feelings and actions for his whole life, including Pepper.

Goes back to Tony saying Howard "never shut up" about Cap in Avengers. Clearly, despite being known as Howard "The Nazi-Killer" Stark (Iron Man), Howard thought his great accomplishment was Cap; creating a better soldier to make war safer. He was so proud he named S.H.I.E.L.D. after his creation. His one regret was likely Bucky being the only Howling Commando to die in action (Winter Soldier). He mourned Bucky for 48 years, and then Bucky pops up again, alive after all. And Bucky's murderous face is the last thing Howard sees. (Maria also, but she never knew Bucky.) And then Steve and his boo-thing use Howard's great invention to pretty much beat Tony to death. Steve is a piece of shit through this film. At every opportunity, he rejects working with Tony, to the point of violence. BTW, it is so charming watching Age of Ultron where Steve gets in Tony‘s grill about "keeping secrets" without ever bothering to mention the whole "the reason Sam isn't here is because I have him looking for my best buddy, who murdered your parents" thing. Tony's been having a breakdown for SEVEN films at this point (there is a reason why in Ultron, Tony's nightmare was STEVE accusing him of failing the team), and FOR YEARS Steve just sits on his chance to help Tony heal, because he wants to do his "I do what I want, and if you don't like it, I'll fight everybody" teenage narcissist crap. And because Steve doesn't care about anybody but his boyfriend.

I'd say it's General/Secretary Ross. He is 100% wrong about everything he does. He violates the sovereignty of Brazil, and then criticizes the Avengers. The fact that he's not in prison is reason enough not to trust the government.

The actor that plays Zemo is AMAZING. He conveys so much pain in his dialogue with T'Challa. He's even better in his later appearances (no spoilers!)

The thing is, both sides were manipulated, not just by Zemo, but by Ross. Of all the carnage he listed, only the Ultron event was the Avengers' fault, and really only 2 of them: Stark and Banner. The others were deliberately kept in the dark until it was too late. The Battle of NYC would have happened without the Avengers. Earth would have lost and NYC would be a smoking crater from a nuke. The Battle of the Potomac (Hydra exposure) without Avengers would have resulted in hundreds of thousands dead from the 3 warships and Hydra in control of the world. Even Nigeria would have been worse if Wanda hadn't bottled that explosion and removed it from the street level before she lost control. Ross manipulated the scenario to his own ends, just like he did everything in the Hulk movie, including the initial experiments that accidentally created the Hulk. The Secovia Accords are well named. Secovia was the only charge levied that had any true meaning. Without Ross involved, the ruling might have been more focused, rather than broad-spectrum control under one who always seeks power.

In the final fight, when Steve had Tony on the ground and lifted up that shield, several people in the theater with me (myself included) screamed 'STOP!'. It was such a visceral experience watching it in the theater.

The scene was played out like Steve was going to strike Tony. Then Tony puts his hands up to block, giving Steve the chance to wreck his arc reactor, ending the fight. A perfect use of tactics. But afterwards, I felt disappointed in myself thinking that Steve was actually going to hit Tony. And for a moment, the camera was on Tony's face, and he looked like he felt just as disappointed thinking Steve would actually do it. The music went with it perfectly. It was so well done.

I can understand both sides but I'm firmly on Caps side. He believes in people, has faith in them, but knows how easily people can be swayed. Fighting the nazis, and Hydra, and then Hydra hiding in Shield. He knows that the only people who can possibly respect the power they yield is themselves. Ross proves this by talking about the Avengers as weapons instead of people. Boards, councils, will always see them as weapons to be used and we've already seen corrupt world security councils in this MCU journey. Thank you for another fantastic reaction :)

100% on Cap’s side except for the fact that he had a near confirmation that he knew Bucky likely killed Tony’s parents but never told Tony in a better environment, he failed as a friend. Other than that, Team Cap all the way.

The thing I loved most about this movie is the 180 that both Ironman and Captian America did. Tony, who would never have given control of Ironman to anyone (he said as much in Ironman 2) ,is now agreeing to do that very thing. And Steve, always the soldier, always obeying orders, would now rather be a fugitive then give up the right to decide how the Avengers should be used. Because we get to be with these characters so much over so many movies we really can understand the reasons behind why they do what they do and think what they think. Love your reactions and can hardly wait for more!! 🚁

But I don't think Tony would ever do what he did in this movie - he's too smart. How would Sokovia turn out differently? New York? Or anywhere else. Everything bad that happened was done out of the attempt to do good - nothing nefarious were they guilty of, and the concept of being "put in check" is about as insane as it gets, IMO, for Tony to suggest. What are you going to do, suspend them without pay? Give them a Timeout like Wanda? For saving Captain America lol. This Civil War Tony didn't think it through.

@@MoMoMyPup10 Well, police and military forces in our real world have boundaries and limitations set on them (as much as police like to challenge that and just do things as they please in some areas of the world), so why not do the same with a group of enhanced individuals who arguably can destroy way more and much quicker. If this existed in real life, I have a feeling that many countries/leaders/civilians would want something like the Accords put in place. There would certainly be conversations about why can THEY do things as they please, but not anyone else?

It wasn't intentional. But it's tough when innocent people get killed as collatoral damage and you can only excuse it with "it wasn't intentional". And then remember that Wanda's parents were killed, by collatoral damage, that wasn't intentional. She didn't accept that excuse, and now she's accidentally caused that same type of civilian death with everyone telling her it's just collatoral damage and not intentional. She has literally been on both sides of that.

This is my number one MCU movie, with Winter soldier probably in third place, but the top spots are closely contested. Captain America is my favorite character, but my favorite line in the whole MCU is Tony saying "I don't care. He killed my mom." I tend to lean on Cap's side of the conflict, but there is a lot of logic in the side of the Sokovia Accords. If the Avengers were not the pure heroes they are, they 100% would need oversight, so there is logic in establishing that oversight before they get corrupted or misguided, but we have not seen anything in the MCU to establish faith in the UN pannel that they would have put in charge, and that could cause the exact problem that the oversight was intended to prevent. I also love that the conflict was only fueled by Tony's relationship problems and Cap having just lost Peggy. Neither one is in the best mental state right now, so they were not communicating as well as they could.

Hell, even in the real world, with the real world history, we can look back on the UN and it's track record and see that giving them power over a group like the Avengers would be a HORRIBLE idea. When Cap says "this document just shifts the blame" he's right. It's like the other side of survivors guilt. The danger has passed, the damage is done, and SOMEONE has to take the blame for it. It's like when a customer comes in and yells at a cashier for something they have absolutely zero control over. Sometimes people just want someone to yell at to voice their frustrations.

Pretty firmly on Cap's side. Tony has a line "We need to be put in check".....Who's "we?" Tony is the reckless one. Ultron is his fault. The whole team is paying for his mistakes. Everything else Ross says in that meeting. What? Would you rather us not interfere? You sure about that? We can go one-by-one for all those events and see how they play out if the Avengers aren't there. Also, registration for "other" people will never sit right with me. RIP Chadwick Boseman

I’ll never understand how people are on Tony’s side. I understand his guilt but his stance is ridiculous. He himself couldn’t even follow the rules he’s pushing everyone to sign. The minute something is going down that he wants to get involved in, he lies to Ross and flies off to stop Zemo…pretty sure that constitutes as a violation of the accords as a U.N. panel did not decide to send him there.

I was on team cap because in Captain America 2 we saw hydra infiltrate the deepest levels of shield and its leadership. I mean, shield wanted to bomb New York City in the very first Avengers movie and that decision very well could have been with hydra influence. Who's to say they haven't done that to the UN? A hydra led UN would sabotage any effort the Avengers would make to save the world

I haven't heard too many people talk about this, but the music at the end of Steve and Tony's fight. Beautiful. You can hear it at 46:52, and it's so poignant, and makes all that just happened in this movie hit me in the feels.

I'm firmly on Cap's side with this. While I understand the other side's desire to avoid supers getting to run roughshod all over the planet with negligible consequences, the fact is that we have more evidence how people with agendas, both personal and political (and often the same sort the Avengers fight on a bigger scale), are far more problematic. I mean, would you want the leaders of your HOA or PTA deciding who gets policed and who doesn't? That said, I do think having some identifiable oversight of the Avengers isn't a bad idea, I just haven't seen a good way to implement it. (Who oversees the overseers?) Until that happens, I'm with Cap.

Thank you. Most people miss that. And I see people in the comments saying that Bucky held back, no, he didn't. He was just surprised that Peter was easily able to block and grab his metal arm. Strength wise, Spider-Man is stronger than a super soldier.

They hadn't really done much in the films to showcase Peter's strength. They also haven't touched on his rapid healing ability. Not as fast as Wolverine, but a broken arm healed in a couple days in the early issues.

Hard to choose. Like Tony as Steve "Did you know" Steve should have just been honest. I mean how would one feel " He killed my mom" As far as people about Tony because of Ultron. Well he did save the world in the 1st Avengers, but trying to protect the world again he made a boo boo. Least he tried, cant say much for most people.

Team Cap Y'all! Tough call on Winter Soldier vs Civil War. The dramatic twist and the emotions of the fight (the loss of arms, legs and shields was traumatic) and yet everyone's motivations on all sides (including Zemo's and even Ross's) we're believable and authentic. p.s. Great reaction! This movie was a really interesting twist in that it had finished a complete role reversal between two characters and it had no villains (other than Crossbones/Rumlow at the very start), just a series of badly hurt people looking to revenge themselves on those who they thought had hurt them. Tony is now in the old Cap role: willing to concede to the authority of others while Cap is in Tony's old role: unwilling to trust in anyone except himself and his closest friends. Both changes make sense. Tony, after the destruction caused by his brain child Ultron, no longer trusts himself to be the smartest and most correct person in the room. Steve, after seeing the organization he followed and believed in completely had been actually controlled by his original enemy all this time, is no longer willing to trust in outside organizations to control his actions. Especially not an absolutely corrupt and destructive one like the United Nations. I am absolutely Team Cap on this one, just because I don't trust others to do my thinking for me or decide what is the best thing for me to do. I'll still do what I think is best and right for all concerned, not just for me, and I can't trust governmental bureaucracies to be anything but self-absorbed with their own power, so I wouldn't trust the U.N. either. Such an excellent movie and it wasn't one where the world was going to end if they failed, which I was growing tired of by the time we were in phase 2. This, like Ant-Man, was more personal and smaller scale, no matter what happened to the Leipzig airport. 😀 Side note: the superhero comics I loved as a kid and in my teens were much more the smaller scale adventures, and the MCU overdid the large scale wars in my opinion. Not awful, but not really my thing.

This is definitely a top tier Marvel movie, when they were at their peak. Having Spider-man come over from Sony to star in the MCU was a real shake up to the Marvel fandom. We never thought we would see that! Excellent conflict, both sides make sense. I could write a wall of text supporting each side... but I'll spare all of you from that. lol. Looking forward to more movies!

I hope you know Spider-Man is a Marvel Character. Sony only owns the film rights to him, Marvel owns every other aspect of the character such as merchandise, cartoons and especially the comics. Since 1962 he has been one of Marvel’s A list characters and pretty much their mascot, I think only Hulk and Wolverine rival him in popularity.

@@andrewft31 Yes of course. The point of my comment is that he crossed over into the MCU. This had never happened before and was a pleasant surprise to see him join with other Marvel characters that had made a home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was a big deal at the time. Up until then, Sony and Fox (with the X-men who are also Marvel characters) were basically rival studios and had never crossed over. This was the beginning of a new partnership.

@@testfire3000 And it was the best decision Sony made cuz they didn’t exactly have a good track record since Spider-Man 2 and sabotaged their own projects so I think the combination of them and Marvel was for the best and despite me liking the Venoms they’re definitely not as good as they could be and Morbius is atrocious despite the meme material it gave us so they screwed those up too really Opinions are divided on Tom Holland’s Peter but I think despite the changes they made to him to make him fit in their universe, he’s very comic accurate with his quips and the balance between Peter/Spidey is played perfectly by Tom Holland and he nails the younger Peter And his character development over his trilogy is really well done too cuz he’s not perfect, he doesn’t always make the best decisions but he always learns a lesson and proves himself in the end and the whole trilogy been his origin was great and meant they didn’t rush his development into the Spider-Man we all come to expect. And I like that with each film he became more independent too and started trusting himself more and that’s perfectly shown by him been the leader figure in No Way Home

This is the movie where if you stand back and look at it from a wholistic perspective. Neither Steve nor Tony were making the morally good choices. If you choose a side you are still picking a wrong side as they are both acting out of passion and feelings. Tony for his family and his reaction to what happend in the first Avengers film combined with the killer robots in Age of Ultron, and Steve for his best friend and Hydra.

Great character introductions, great action, great backstory, great villain…etc. I’ve never gotten to have an in depth discussion about this movie, but I’m 100% team Cap. I do believe Tony is wrong. Tony was willing to hand over complete responsibility of his actions to the government, because he felt guilty, well until that no longer suited his goals or agenda. As far as collateral damage is concerned no one wants to be apart of it (directly or indirectly), but unfortunately it’s a fact of war/life.

I am 100% Team Cap all the way all day every day. I understand why they had Spidey join Tony, and I have really enjoyed the relationship it has set up between him and Tony, but it's always felt grating. The "If I see a problem I can't walk away" mentality that Cap has seems SO similar to the "With great power" that it always felt like Spidey really should be team Cap. Also, now that you're to this point, Tom Holland has confirmed that it was a young Peter Parker (in an Iron Man mask) who stood up to the Whiplash drones briefly in Iron Man 2

Agreed. Cap talking about being able to have the freedom to intervene in places that they feel they have to and avoid those that they don't just felt so in accordance with Peter saying "If I have the ability to stop bad things from happening and I don't, then they happen because of me." I think that if Steve and Tony both described their own position to him and let him choose, Peter would be solidly on team Cap. And given Widow's history working with various governments, it's interesting that she signed as well.

It was never going to work Cap's way. Even within the movie itself, Ross says that the Avengers are a problem that _the world can no longer ignore_ . The Accords were always going to come, regardless of what happened. At least, even here, there was a chance to make amendments that made the team feel more comfortable.

OMG YOUR HAIR IS SO PRETTY, HOME RUN!!! I agree with your takes! It's an Avengers movie. The key plot point of Tony and Steve being too rushed to talk things out didn't sell me either, but I talked myself into it. There are some beautiful people in this movie, and the helicopter scene is one of my favorite moments in the entire MCU. The introductions of Black Panther and Spiderman are so effortless, flawless, and natural; they really show the pristine planning and execution of MCU filmmaking. Delivering believable fights with all those different power levels is a gold star achievement of nerddom. Shout out to how complicated this movie's story is. I loved how Zemo - and Black Panther for a bit - were presented as bad guys and then beautifully humanized. I loved seeing you cry when everyone fought, because seeing someone's heart is a joyful honor. I forgot about Rumlow and Ross at the start too, so don't feel bad -- we're human and they didn't get much introduction in this very complicated story. I think Civil War is a good movie. And YOU are fucking beautiful with your new hair. ✌

Some fun facts about this film: That was really Chris Evans holding that helicopter in place! Marvel and Sony inked the deal that allowed Spider-Man to be in the MCU while this film was in production, so many of Tom Holland's scenes during the run-up to the big battle in Germany had to be created digitally as he was literally a last-minute addition to the film. In fact, the first trailer for the film showed the lineup pre-Spider-Man and if you compare the two you can see how they had to digitally move Black Widow over to fit Spider-Man into the line-up.; Tom Holland was so starstruck having his first scene with RDJ that he forgot his blocking for the scene in the bedroom. When Tony tells Peter "I'm going to sit there" it was because Tom forgot to move his leg so RDJ could sit down on the bed next to him. Like you, I still think Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best of the MCU films, but yes, this film comes very close. I often refer to it as Avengers 2.5. 🚁

The three Captain America movies are marvel at their best. It’s their most relatable hero and it’s easy to see how someone who lived though both the Nazis and Hydra would be against the accords. Glad you liked it. This is the kind of movie you can only do in something like the MCU. So many characters and so many backstories. You can't just jump into a movie like this without making it a mess if you don't have all of their backstories and history behind them already (well, not counting Black Panther and Spider-Man...). By getting all those origins and stories in previous films out of the way and spending time (i.e.: lots of movies) falling in love with all the characters, you can get a movie like this. Imo Zemo is one of the best, if not the best "villain" (really more antagonist) in the MCU. He's just a guy, he's trained, but in the end a guy. Yet he succeeds better than most all MCU villains in what he wanted. He's also not one note. He's understandable and interesting. He's also very mastetfully played. Him and Chadwick are stand out actors in this film

Captain America: Civil War is an awesome movie! I can confidently say that I was Team Cap when it came to the Sokovia Accords. In regards to Tony's parents...that's way more complicated. I completely understand Tony's anger though. I always love hearing about behind the scenes rumors and factoids. For example, how Marvel was able to use Spider-Man 🕷 in Civil War. Ihad heard that they wrote him in hoping they'd be able to legally use him. But I've also heard that they didn't write him in until they were about halfway done with writing when they got the okay. I'm firmly on team Cap even if I can understand Tony's point of view, but just because he is the one who almost destroyed the world due to his unrestrained attempt to save it, does it not mean that others have to be restrained like he apparently needs to be. And let's face it, the way how the prisoners at the raft can be held idefinitely without a trial and no access to laywers is just one reasons why I'm against the accords and don't get me started on how they treated Wanda at the Raft. Imho the Accords were just Ross's attempt to finish what he started in "The incredible Hulk" He wants to get his hands on Hulk no matter the consequences for others.

It honestly baffles me that anyone could actually be on team Tony, based on how it is presented in the film. He was clearly motivated by guilt for previous choices he had made and not any sort of objective analysis of the situation. The fact that nobody called him out when he tried to guilt trip them about the kid who died in Sokovia is beyond me. That was 100% a problem of his own creation, so to try to use it to guilt trip the rest of the team was just...cringe. (I obviously know it's just writing, but jeez, I feel like any well adjusted person would see this as wildy manipulative had it been real.) It also doesn't help that the U.N. in real life is laughably useless, so invoking them as any sort of authoirity in the film is going to sound silly.

As a long time comic reader they really downplayed this event in the movies in the comics the event was much worse to the point Tony became a pariah to the Superhero community ironically in the comics Spider-Man was one of those who hated Tony the most after what he did and Steve was murdered some heroes even believed Tony planned the whole thing just to kill Steve. But I digress the movie really added more nuance to the motives of each team and it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. Both Tony and Steve and valid points of there stances. Tony neededsomeone to hold the leash because he went overboard created Ultron and it destroyed Sokovia, yes we can easily say Wanda was to blame but Tony made the choice to plug the sceptre into an otherwise faulty program he never even asked input of the rest of the team he manipulated Bruce simply as a means to his end. And what does he do he tries it again with Jarvis assuming with no cause the outcome would be different. Its a miracle Vision didn’t become another killing machine. Steve also has a point too. After Winter Soldier with SHIELD secretly being Hydra Steve no longer trusts institutions to tell him what to do if a person like Pearce can come off as a good guy with evil motives whose to say one person in this panel won’t do the same. Few things about the movie Tony’s ‘olive branch’ was a lie. RDJ himself said Tony had no intention of following through with anything he promised Steve. He was just saying whatever he could in order to convince Steve to sign. This is confirmed in a delete scene that shows that Everett had already agreed to release Bucky into T’Challa’s custody, which Tony would know. As for Steve knowing about Bucky and Tony’s parents. According to the Russo brothers, Steve’s initial answer to Tony that he genuinely was unaware of Bucky’s role in the whole thing and it was the truth. The most he knew was Hydra was behind it and that was only from what Zola said in Winter Soldier. It also wasn’t a conscious decision to keep it from Tony, he just didn’t think about it. Steve knew Hydra might be involved based on Zola's word, which was before he found out about Bucky, but that was all he knew for sure. Steve didn't know if Zola was just screwing with him or not until the bunker. Steve was being honest when he said he didn't know it was Bucky he never revisited it, he never thought about it again until he saw that video. Now I am not Anti-Team Tony or Anti-Team Cap. The main reason for this is the Accords they don’t offer oversight, they offer control. The Avengers cannot make a move without asking the UN, who aren’t known for speedy decisions. How many lives do think would have been saved in previous MCU films if the Avengers had stopped to ask for permission? The Accords are a deeply flawed and unconstitutional piece of legislation that should never see the light of day and the start of a dictatorship I mean it denies people lawyers for one so that is unconstitutional as it gets. I’m anti-Accords especially when they are coming from a corrupt man like Ross. People like to pretend what Ross did in ‘Incredible Hulk’ doesn’t count.

Cap wanted Bucky to have the presumption of [Innocent Until Proven Guilty] and due process. The German spec ops team had shoot to kill orders. (The more things change...) Tony was angry that Steve held back that he learned HYDRA had Howard and Maria assassinated. Tony had been provided all the stuff Howard worked on for SHIELD in Iron Man 2, Iron Man downloaded all of SHIELD's files from the helicarrier in Avengers, Black Widow flooded HYDRA files to the public in Captain America: Winter Soldier. All that information, and Tony missed the connections. (Howard's briefcase when opened had the first appearance of Bucky on the cover of the Captain America's first comic. In Cap's first movie, the copies had Bucky removed as he was not the teen sidekick but a full grown soldier.) Tony was not acting like Sherlock Holmes in this movie. :)

You've written out this long, delightful comment and I just can't resist. The Ultron program wasn't faulty, it wasn't *finished*, they say that in AoU at least a couple times. Tony and Bruce didn't actually launch the program Tony uncovered in the stone either, it seems to have done that itself. (That doesn't mean Tony doesn't blame himself of course, he does have the narcissistic guilt complex down to a science doesn't he.) I'm personally frustrated by the use of post-production interviews being provided as 'evidence' one way or another, it's unfair to the characters and IMO runs counter to the directors' vision when they've cut a plot point out prior to the movie launching. Still, that is an interesting tidbit. Speaking of frustrated, I'm frustrated that they had Steve just cave and cop to 'knowing' ngl; he didn't know, aside from the hint Zola gave and might very well have been lying about. They needed these idiots we love to fight, but man it chaps my hide. He could have held his line of "I didn't know it was him" and Tony would have just had a 'tear the bunker apart' breakdown instead of a 'beat your faces in' breakdown. Ahh, the what-ifs. We don't know *what* the Accords are actually about, all we really know is the context given in that round table debate: the team has been ignoring the sovereign borders of other nations on their quest against Hydra remnants, and the world is tired of cleaning up the mess they inevitably leave in their wake. Tony says then and there that they can be amended, but the team needs to be seen playing ball to have the influence required to make those changes happen. Steve doesn't have a point, but Tony's point is deeply flawed in that it's coming from his own guilt rather than an understanding of the bigger picture. Let's be real without the existence of metahumans like the mutants, any attempt at adapting the original Civil War comic run was gonna be. . . meh. Team Bucky ftw, Steve and Tony need a timeout and a damn nap.

Had Bucky not escaped custody and lead them to Zemo he’s have been the scapegoat for it all. The accords were already a problem especially when it was coming from a man like Ross. All the gist of the Accords does is take anyone who doesn’t agree with them and lock them in a black site prison. Worst of all a supposed idea of ethics is coming from a man thoroughly corrupt like Ross.

One of my favorite tiny moments in this movie is Tony's silent reaction to Peter saying "when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." Peter's reasoning absolutely agrees with Steve. He's not asking permission to help, he feels it's his duty to help everyone he can no matter what others have to say about it. And for just a moment it looks like it shakes Tony before he regains his composure.

I’m pretty 50/50 on the issue of which side to pick because I can see both sides clearly. It’s just so hard to choose when both sides so earnestly mean well and think they are doing the right thing, and the thing is, they do both have valid points and it’s not like one of them is a villain, it’s kind of up to the viewer to decide. Daniel Brühl as Zemo is one the best villains. He is not "super powered" villain, he just is smart, relentless and fully relatable. He was amazing in Tarantino´s inglorious Basterds and in Ron Howard´s Rush with Chris Hemsworth. MCU has brought some of the best actors and actress´into franchise. My only regret in this film is, that Zemo doesn´t get enough screen time. At the same time I so happy how they introduce Black Panther. Chadewick Boseman (RIP) was phenomenal as T´challa

Honestly, I think Nat was on Steve's side the whole time. Remember, she's a spy, an expert on infiltration and deception. But she also trusts Cap and his judgment more than anyone after their time together in the previous Captain America movie. And though Tony is her Avengers teammate, I think she may have been playing him all along, waiting for the right opportunity to help Cap, and that's ultimately why she let him and Bucky escape.

I love this movie, it was a better Avengers movie than Age of Ultron was and it is ostensibly just a Captain America movie. I love that you can see every side, every argument. You get why Tony would freak and want to kill the person he just watched choke his mother to death. You get why Steve would do everything he could to save his best friend and the only link to the life he lost. You get why Black Panther would be the way he is and why each of the others would join as they do (even Nat changing sides in typical Nat style). It all works so well and is just tragic. I think for which is side is right though you have to look at the original question. Should a group of people who just happen to be powerful be able to exert their will where ever they want, however they want, and to whomever they want. If you believe that the power of a police force (using force to exert your will) should only reside in the representatives of the people, you just can't be ok with it. The right thing under the law that point was that they were international criminals. They weren't treated as such because people were appreciative and could see their motives... but it had to stop. The casualties were mounting. The accords WERE a middle ground. They were a way to make it retroactive that the Avengers wouldn't be criminals and instead would be able to keep protecting people, the trade off was that representatives of the people would be in charge... I don't know that that is a bad thing at all. It seems pretty understanding to me. I think the accords were right, so I would have to go with Tony on this one.

@@kaiielle They aren't wrong, Tony was feeling incredible guilt and that because he (and the others) had decided on their own to do everything that caused that much damage that they help some responsibility for the incredible amounts of death and destruction that occurred. He wasn't wrong, but he wasn't right because of his guilt... he was guilty because he was right. (I am not sure that made sense). Maybe it would be better to say that in this movie I was on Team Ross / the UN. He was an asshole of a general (in the Incredible Hulk) and still an asshole as secretary of state... but he wasn't wrong. Again... the biggest achievement of this movie is that you can see every side. The decision made by everyone make sense for their characters and where they are in their arc... and it a freaking tragedy as a result.

Zemo was arguably the best villain. Much stronger villains than him tried to take down avengers but failed, Zemo did the most damage to them without even fighting. Probably because he had a mission to avenge the death of his family.

I can understand both sides and see there they are both coming from. But in the end I have to go with Steve. After seeing how easy Hydra hid within Shield, it is understandable how he wouldn't want to trust anyone who only sees them as weapons. And in the non-accords fight, Tony wants revenge, but is trying to get it fron the wrong person. Bucky was just a tool, who wasn't actually at fault, Hydra is the real killer. And while Tony was out to kill, Steve and Bucky were only trying to disarm and stop Tony. Plus, just like Steve, I will always be Team Bucky anyway. He is my favorite MCU character (and Sebastian is one of my favorite actors)

Civil War was one of the movies i was excited for you to see. It is such an important movie, introducing new characters and plot points. I really do like how neither side is portrayed as correct or false, and how neither really won in the end. It also introduced Spider-Man, my favourite character in the MCU. (I would have a few funfacts, but i need to fact check those before i write them-)

Black Panther learned to what it means to become a hero by capturing Zemo and not killing him - great character arc. Tony joined the Accords for all the wrong reasons. Guilt plus wanting to get back in good with Pepper. Steve fought to save both Bucky's life and Tony's soul. Tony tried to kill Bucky knowing what Hydra did. Steve kept Tony from becoming a murderer.

Yes, deep down Steve knew if he told Tony abt his parents, he’d went crazy. And also the Sokovia tragedy was Tony’s fault, he tried to make something that’ll save the world but ended up destroying it, but it’s none of the avengers fault, ITS HIS. The others was just trying to help clean up his mess, and he had the audacity to tell everyone that WE need to be held accountable, no.. YOU DO.

@@rivervixens06 I mean bruh every hero has the ability to be a danger. Look no further than at Wanda, Bruce, Thor and Tony himself. These guys are all capable of destroying the whole world with varying amount of time needed to finish the deed. And you ask why he has the audacity? He's just being careful abt it after all those incidents from his teammates. Like Batman said, you are a fool for not believing that we need counter-measures in case heroes go rogue.

@@dylanburton4955 I know that the Accords is not the best way to go abt it, but like no one else there was able to offer a better solution on the spot unfortunately. Both Steve and Tony were too emotionally unstable at the time so neither of them came up with their own ideas to prove that they can regulate themselves like how Justice League does it. The other Avengers also did not have any good idea, and for all his intelligence/wisdom Vision did not think of the best course of action to propose to everyone bcs he was busy fawning over Wanda😅

Team Cap. If you recall, Phase One was pretty much about keeping new-found power out of the wrong hands. In The Incredible Hulk, the wrong hands was General (now Secretary) Ross. In Hulk, and in this film, Ross is working hard to gain control over superhumans. Cap initially understood that “people with agendas” can be a problem. Once Bucky became involved, Cap was just making sure Bucky didn’t die. Cap didn’t have an issue with Bucky being detained, just with being killed.

Cap also refused to speak with anyone who opposed his view and went on a world tour destroying people property for his own personal gain and got his friends in more trouble than it’s worth. It’s a noble but still somewhat selfish endeavor.

@@TheIcemanthomas Not really, he knew Bucky was innocent and no one listened to him which was very clearly shown by Tony refusing to listen to at the airport and of course Tony did go to him but things still ended badly and you can’t exactly trust Ross, he’s an awful guy. He was right not to trust the accords As for him keeping the secret about Tony’s parents, Cap is still a human at the end of the day and he isn’t perfect and admits to been wrong to do that

In the comics, I was on Cap’s side, and I was still on his side in the movie. I can see, and empathize, with Tony’s views, but I just agree with Cap more. It’s very, very different from the comic books, but it’s still a good movie.

Hey Kaiielle, William Hurt who played Secretary of State Ross passed away about a year ago. From the 1980s on he was one of our most celebrated actors, nominated for 4 Academy Awards. In his heyday, he starred in such popular movies as Altered States, Body Heat, Broadcast News and The Big Chill. He was another example of Marvel's using older acting legends (such as Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford, Glenn Close) in supporting roles.

I am firmly on Cap's Team, and no matter what side you choose, it is because it made you think and feel about the choice, yes? What more can we ask? I believe Banner and Thor would be Team Cap, although for different personal reasons. Banner, because he has trust issues, and Thor, although he could agree with the idea, who would he ever trust more than himself to decide how to handle things?

Hi, Kaiielle! Loved this reaction, and all the affection you're showing to these amazing characters. The Russo brothers sure know how to tell a story, don't they? Your review touched on many of points that fans notice in this movie: How agonizing it is to choose a side in this conflict; the skill of the Russo brothers in giving each character a chance to shine, and in making clear everyone's stakes and their reasons for being there; how exciting and entertaining the story is, despite the pain of seeing our heroes fight each other. I especially liked your observation that the final conflict, and the culmination of Zemo's plan, could have been avoided entirely with honesty and better communication. Touching on those other reviews, I can understand their opinion that the title "Civil War" seems overblown. In case you don't know, it's taken from a massive crossover event from Marvel Comics history. It spanned several months and multiple titles, and impacted nearly all U.S.-based superheroes, not just the Avengers. The "Civil War" comics event was much larger in scale than this story, but it had various similarities: a tragic crisis resulting in superheroes being forced to register with the government, with Captain America and Iron Man on opposite sides, and dark forces seeking to capitalize on the chaos. For a single movie, though, things had to be scaled down. So glad to hear that you've got a head-start on Sony's "Spider-Man" movies, and with friends guiding you through that somewhat tangled web. Spidey's introduction to the MCU was a huge deal for fans. Marvel Studios actually revealed it in the 2nd trailer for this movie, and viewers went absolutely nuts over it. On RU-vid, there is in fact an hour-long compilation of reactions to the final 5 seconds of said trailer, and I find it a joy to watch. P.S. I was looking forward to your reaction to the 🚁scene. Great reaction. For me, this movie was the point where the MCU just took off like crazy. Every movie after this just kept getting better and better. In this one, you see how both Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers change. In the past, Tony was brash and took all kinds of crazy chances. Steve on the other hand, was a consummate soldier, always following orders. In this movie we see how they have both gone to the other end of the spectrum. In fact with Tony, you see it at the beginning of the movie - he's talking to some college students and he's reading off a teleprompter. He would have never done that before. Steve, in contrast, now becomes a "criminal." Great movie. Definitely one of favorite MCU movies. 🚁 ... I almost forgot the helicopter emoji!

Team Cap since the first time I watched this movie and will always be even if Iron Man is my all time favorite! From one reactor to another, I want to say you're so entertaining and your voice is so soothing. I really love how you appreciate the small things such as outfits and the bromance between Bucky and Steve or Steve and Sam. This movie is soo up there for me for how realistic the concept is. Growing up, most superhero movies never focused the effect "kicking a*s" had on normal civilians and their cities. I love love love the concept behind Zemo and what he brought to the table by giving us that insane reveal. I knew you'd love this movie cuz it's very serious and intense. Just a few weeks ago on my way home from my parents’ I drove past airport Leipzig/Halle where the big fight is set and immediately had to rewatch civil war. Such an amazing movie. I love how different it is from most of the rest of the MCU and even though I am on Team Iron Man’, I still can see and understand Steve’s perspective. There is just no right and wrong side, only right and wrong ways to go about it. It’s definitely up there in my top 5 MCU movies.

I would say Tony’s side is wrong as good as his reasons were. He let his guilt blind him And thinking there accords are a good idea was one of Tony’s worst decision alongside with trusting General Ross General Ross was already shown to be a terrible human in the Incredible Hulk and the government controlling the avengers is a terrible idea because the government can’t be trusted As good as Tony’s reasons were he led the avengers in the wrong direction and trusted the wrong side

Love that you loved this. It's got a firm place in my MCU top 3. It's definitely a sort of Avengers 2 1/2, as you correctly noticed mixed with a Captain America film. To me this and Winter Solider (and one Phase 4 movie) have the best balance between humor and seriousness. I just love that this movie is equally about ethical discussions influenced by personal feelings, as it is about the action and world building. My biggest criticism back when I watched it for the first time and now still, is that it felt like they should've killed Rhodey off. To me it was a slight cop out to have him survive such a fall and I feel like it would have added to the stakes.

I'm honestly surprised that they didn't have Falcon catch him. I feel that they were high enough and that Falcon should have been fast enough to make the save, and that the only reason they didn't have Sam make the save was to raise the stakes (especially since Falcon catching Rhodey would have de-escalated the situation.)

Team Cap: Spidey says... "When you can do the things I can do, but you don't, and then people get hurt, they happen because of you". This is EXACTLY cap's reasoning for his argument. Imagine if Sokovia and New York happened and the avengers weren't there. Had Spidey met cap first they would have been on the same page. After the 1st cap movie, did you think Bucky would be the sole focus of an entire movie? Lol

I was actually a moderator (there were 4 of us) of a Marvel fan page on FB when this film came out and it caused so many problems. People took the Tony vs Steve thing too seriously I mean, it's great that the fans were passionate, but it got out of hand with personal attacks and threats I have to say that, BY FAR, it was the Tony Stark uber fans that took things to a very negative level. Cap had his share of fans that were misbehaving, but for every Cap fan we had to ban because of behavior that couldn't be tolerated, we had to ban about 10 Iron Man fans I actually quit being a mod because of this. It took something that was supposed to be fun and just made it very unpleasant.
