In 1988 was released a very special game, strange to some, fascinating to others, but clearly innovative and ahead of its time in many ways. A reviewer called it “A completely unique landmark in computer gaming history”. It was a game about alien worlds, but its unusual concept and revolutionary design made it itself look like an UFO coming from nowhere in the landscape of video games at this time. Its name was Captain Blood, and it was soon to become a mega hit. In France, its origin country, it became legendary...
Music by Jean-Michel Jarre.
Game by Philippe Ulrich and Didier Bouchon

Great video! I never was aware of this artistic marvel, because i never liked the name, so i never looked deeply into this game. But thank you for making a separate episode specific for this game! I think this is one of your best videos. I like your "special effects".

It’s interesting how this game uses fractals so much to draw identifiable things like planets, mountains, and explosions, I’m used to them being used for more abstract things. Also having music by Jean Michel Jarre is neato

Dropping the disk in just for some Jarre music was also a thing.

Still have great respect for this game after all these years, a timeless masterpiece of digital 80s art in my opinion. Did a lot of interesting things that haven’t been repeated really. The phonics of the glyph driven language of course, not even implemented in any of the ports from ST. But even the crash of the Oorx in the fractal landscape does something to throw the monitor sync off, like you (Blood) really lose the remote connection to it. You can see it happening in the video, it also causes modern scan converters like the OSSC to drop sync for a second when it occurs.

I'd love to see a modern developer try to create something similar to this that retains the retro aesthetic. Sounds like a Devolver kind of thing

Captain Blood was among a number of games I used to love playing when visiting my Aunt and Uncle and playing on their Atari stfm. Captain Blood, Defender of the Crown, Starwars, Barbarian, Terrorpods and Startrek Rebel Universe.

I remember this game on the c64, I thought is was impressive at the time but could not understand what I had to do. I would wonder the universe for hours. Old times when we pirate games and had no manuals. This was a game that needed a manual (surely in the box) or internet which we didn't have in 1988

Great video, I like your style and approach, more on personal connection to the games rather than a technical dissection of it. It is refreshing! I played Captain Blood on my 520 STFM from the Precious Metal compilation. I was like you completely immersed,and mesmerised by the language system, I haven't seen anything like it ever since then I think. It did not feel like a dialog through a tree of multiple choice of answers, which many games still use even today. It really felt like like you were talking to sentient beings. I never understood why people find this game weird or hard to understand, when most play much more complicated games like Dungeon Master or Populous and find it completely normal. Captain Blood was easier to grasp for me than these games... Maybe that says something about me, I don't know 😅

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your own personal experience! I agree with your remark that Blood has nothing difficult to grasp... But (at least to me) neither has Dungeon Master ;)

Reminds me a little of Rescue on Fractalus. But given a whole new dimension. I had it for tye Amiga back then but didn't get far. Sounds like the ST version is the best. Professional quality review BTW, nicely done and thank you much!

And now we have "Scorn". Seriously, Captain Blood should me remade for VR. The closest feel to Captain Blood in VR is : A Rogue Escape VR. I think you forgot to mention that the music is composed by Jean-Michel Jarre. Just listen to this on RU-vid "Ethnicolor (Remastered)" at 7:00 by Jean-Michel Jarr,e this is the original music that was digitized for the game. And the voice sample in the music is from an affrican tribe, there is a video on youtube that show how he sampled it.

Thanks for those precisions. I made sure to mention JM Jarre in description and show close-ups of his name on screen. Legendary soundtrack of course.

It was my favorite game on CPC. Then came No Man's Sky and I couldn't help but think the devs must have been fans of Captain Blood. The original version of NMS has very similar gameplay mechanics.

The arrows have nothing to do with overheating AFAIK. They indicate you are detected by the planet's defence systems, which can be avoided by staying low and slow. And your version seems to have an issue with your hardware/TOS configuration bc that hand should not be shaking that much that early (which is a known issue on emulators).
@RetroDream
@RetroDream Год назад
Yea it's strange. I tried different original disks on the ST but the hand-shaking bug is still there.

I'm interested in the game, nice that you covered it. But those shaky shots of a keyboard and constant shaky zooming to some mess of pixels is not very good to show the actual subject here.. too much "effects" for my liking.
