Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award (R)-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. The film is directed by Academy Award (R) nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.(c) Sony

Hanks' final scene in the movie, where he struggles to utter a few words to the doctor just moved me to tears. He is a fantastic actor.

The pirates were not de-humanized in this movie, so I guess I completely disagree with the point made by Duralde. In fact, I think this movie did a wonderful job in this regard especially for the pirate captain. This would have been a simple docu-drama without the interplay between him and Captain Phillips.

I agree with you. I actually felt sympathy for the head pirate (played by Abdi) and the other pirate who stepped on glass. I was hoping that they wouldn't kill any of the pirates (besides the violent one). It was almost as if I could feel that the pirates were just as scared as Phillips during the rescue scene. When Muse (Abdi) said, "When will the elders be here?" in a childish tone, I could immediately sense fear in his voice. It was a truly amazing way of portraying the pirates, in my opinion at least.

let's just say I would rather watch this portrayal of Somalians than that of "Black Hawk Down" where they're all running down the streets like locusts. That was dehumanizing, yet many people would prefer that film. I've worked with a few Somalians and there's not much to them from my experience, so this portrayal seems believable to me. Very primitive, yet something still ticking under there. Very good movie.

The opening scene is very key if you are conscious of Greengrass' past film. On the whole, "Captain Phillips" picks up where "Green Zone" left off in the failure of dialogue between two different cultures - but if you take into consideration "United 93", then the opening scene fits. But for anyone just walking into this film, it does come off as an obvious calm before the storm.

Politics aside, this is a great film, a tense, gripping thriller, with great acting by the two leads (Hanks and Abdi) Maybe the best part of the film is the first one, but the last 30 minutes are filled with great tension that is almost unbearable to watch but one can't look away. 8.5/10

I'd be depressed about it, but the fact that you and I can recognize such things is much more uplifting to me. We live in society where we are growing closer, and learning more about how people all around the world are just people. Not heroes and gods or villains and devils. The fact that you and I, and an increasing number of regular, average people understand this is a grand, beautiful, and astounding thing.

Why wouldn't Maersk hire a small crew of armed security if they were going to take such an unpredictable route? Such a small expense would have dramatically changed the scenario. I'm talking 7-8 guys with 9mm pistols working 3-4 days. The shipping company should explain why they didn't find it necessary to hire armed security in a zone with confirmed presence of armed pirates.

Overall great film, first half is gripping-your-seat filled tension while the 2nd half for me drags significantly at times and not as good as the 1st half but still good. Easily recommend this movie and Tom Hanks proves to us yet once again that he is one of the greatest actors of all time (imo). 7.5/10

The pdf only contains guidelines for shipping companies to use when considering the use of private armed security. Hiring armed SEC. is a win-win situation for shipping companies as the likelihood of their crews, cargo, and vessels reach the port safely and insurance premiums decrease. Armed Maritime Security firms undergo a rigorous set of training courses involving the judicious use of deadly force in international waters and the best firms recruit their personnel from military special forces.

Thanks for the advice, and for the "pass." That's generous of you. But I responded to exactly what you wrote, and more importantly what you implied. Next time, try re-reading your own statements so that unintended inferences won't be made by someone reading what you've written. Thanks and be well.

one of the few instances where I disagree with Alonso. I think Greengrass did a very good job in humanizing them. I wasn't overjoyed with a sense of relief when they were all shot, I was actually sad for all of them and pitied them. If that's not humanizing then I don't know that is.

Yes they do, are you serious? Maybe not so much killing, but many are tortured and left with serious trauma. There are stories of hostages who are murdered or starved to death by Somali pirates. Btw, this movie was simply outstanding. It made you have feeling for both sides (Phillips and pirates). It was also so accurate to what actually happened, unlike many 'true stories'.

What I don't understand is why they had to call it Captain Phillips. If they just wanted to make a loose adaptation (which they did), they could have easily have created a fictional character and said the movie is loosely based off of real pirate raids. Oh well, Hollywood is just obsessed with making movies based off of "real events"

Actually, I would like to clarify a bit. The way western people just subconsciously try to avoid spelling out any actors name just because it is from a different country and race is not acceptable. People's names are their identities. If you can't remember their names then write it down on piece of paper. It's not so difficult than swiping your phone every other second. Tom Hanks won't be so popularly known if he was called an "actor playing the Captains role" in the review here and elsewhere.

I don't think they make Phillips look like a superhero. He's very far from that in this. And I don't think they made the pirates super villains either.
@TrueXyrael

So your original argument suggests that Tom Hanks should have surrendered himself to pirates? According to Reuters, 62 people have died in pirate custody, with 25 of those attributed to murder, the rest due to malnutrition.Surrendering doesn't guarantee safety. Instead, he chooses to resist, because the odds of a small skiff boarding his ship was highly unlikely. Surrendering with small odds of being captured would be idiotic and he would surely have lost his job, but you didn't engage that idea

I understand what you're saying, but that's pretty ridiculous to say he shouldn't have signed on to this role because of that. Amazing actors can play as anybody, idiots, bad guys, good guys, horrible people, nice people, you name it. For instance- Leonardo DiCaprio played as an evil slave owner in the movie Django Unchained.

If you look at the variety of roles Tom Hanks has played and has played very well, it is abundantly clear he is one of our greatest actors. From Big to Philadelphia to Forrest Gump to Apollo 13 to Toy Story to Saving Private Ryan to The Green Mile to Cast Away to Road to Perdition to Captain Phillips and so much more...yeah, I think I'm making my point. For having so many distinguishable qualities, he has such a range and inherent skill for inhabiting characters that is so rare for many actors to accomplish. So yeah, I respectfully but ardently disagree with you ezekielthemack

I'd love to see a good old fashioned dispassionate documentary of this subject. Too bad that seems to be a lost art at the cable channels that used to do that type of work. As it is I'll skip this instance of Western Civilization dramatically slapping itself on the back. I've been watching this kind of manly propaganda since the 60s when soldiers and cowboys were all over TV, and I've lost the ability to ignore how obviously my emotional chains are being yanked.
