I had always assumed that everyone in the history of forever grew up watching this over and over again. I am still shocked when I meet people who have never even heard of it.
My grandma had a collection of movies that everybody in the family has seen a million times and Captain Ron was one of them. It's been a classic for me since I was very young.
What about that movie where he was a hockey coach for the American team during the winter Olympics? (I think the Olympics) It looked like a good movie that I missed

That's weird, too, because she's about twenty-one months younger than me. I'm going to text her right now and ask. lol
The physical comedy was good, too. The editing in the scene where the belt sander hits Martin Short in the face and knocks him into the water was excellent.😉
OKAY, NO! I literally grew up watching it and STILL have the VHS tape. I REFUSE to let this be an "Almost" Cult Classic. This movie HAS recognition, but people keep forgetting the name of the movie. Edit: Also, my opinion of Martin's performance was literally hilarious. You see his sanity go every which way. I will literally email you to make sure we can get or even create those interviews.

Every single actor is hilarious in this movie Short and Russell play off each other perfectly, they are comedy gold. In my opinion easily the most underrated comedy of the 90’s, and easily one of the best period.
I have always enjoyed this channel as it has introduced me to so many new movies I had never heard of. But I have to say that there is a community where I know this movie is indeed beloved at the cult level, the sailing community. Having sailed since I was five, we have always kept a copy of Captain Ron on our boat and so have all of our friends on their boats. And in many cases, when we meet new sailors, they too know and love this movie. Even those who sailed to the United States from Europe I have met said to me that while they already wanted too cross the Atlantic, this movie helped inspire them even more to visit the states and the Caribbean. And having visited Puerto Rico I learned talking with locals in San Juan that many sailors have visited San Juan particularly to see the old forts near the port that are depicted in the movie. I think its because of its honesty that this movie is so beloved by sailors; all the sanding and boat maintenance, the difficulty with locals, the unpredictable weather, and the reality that no matter how much you prepare, you can never be ready for the adventure that lays ahead. And that's the reason we enjoy it so much and it will always be one of my absolute favourites.
My family watched this last month for my mom's birthday and I was so pleasantly suprised by how actually good it was. Espically with how little the movies mentioned, I was so happy to see you do this one.
You gotta love Captain Ron. He's happy-go-lucky, doesn't sweat the small stuff, and while oftentimes very laid back and somewhat irresponsible, yet he shows that he ultimately means well, and wants Martin's family to see him as a hero.
The only thing I remember was the hide the salami line. When I was a kid I didn’t get it and it’s always what I think of when I think of this movie. So glad you put it in your review lol
My family has always said that Captain Ron is the funniest most underrated comedy of all time. Anyone I've ever shown it to has absolutely loved it and never heard of it
I was working as a Paramedic in Los Angeles in '92 when the riots broke out. A short time after, my partner showed me this movie on the VCR in our station. I remember turning to him at the end and saying: "I want to be Captain Ron." By the Spring of '94 I had a new career teaching SCUBA in Mexico and the Caribbean. Thank you, Captain Ron.

I remember when Kurt Russell was in "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes", which my 7th grade science teacher, Mrs Evans had a huge movie poster of Kurt Russell in a reclining chair with his tennis-shoe-shod feet on a desk with a CRT and a keyboard in front of his feet ( btw, we called her "Fishface" behind her back, but she was a really nice teacher) . This was way before anyone had computers in schools. And of course he was in a lot of Disney films from the 1970's. We underestimated his acting and his comedic talents back then.

Quite a few years in a row, i used to attend NewYears Eve parties hosted by a friend of mine. Guests inincluded fellow boaters from the marina where he kept his bòat.a Fast forward to New Year Day. Waking mid morirning up and having a hearty breakfast was always followed by everybody sitting around the TV and watching " Captain Ron". What a way to start off the New Year!
I used to watch the VHS of this whenever there was a snow day in high school/middle school. And I lived in central PA so I watched this film a ton. Watched it a few months, which was the first time in about 20+ years, and it is still just as great as it was when I first saw it.
Loved this film, watching it years ago👍!!! Kurt's the man!!! Excellent in EVERYTHING he does, and never disappoints (UNLESS, the movie and/or script he's in). Teamed up with another, of my favorite comic actors, Martin Short. Great chemistry, between them. I'm not a comedy picture person, but this cuts the mustard. EVERY actor here, was superb.
I remember watching this as a kid - my Mum had taped it off TV years prior. I don't think I've heard anyone else talk about it until now, which is a shame. Even to this day so many lines stick in my head.

FOR those that sail, whether it be the to the Bahamas every season or circumnavigate the world , when sailors get together for dinner , usually Saturday night , several times a month, you can be someone is watching CAPTAIN RON! AND SOMETIMES A DOUBLE OF MOVIE OF ANOTHER MOVIE I DONT GET TIRED OF OVERBOARD! LOVE THESE TWO MOVIES AND THEY STILL MAKE ME LAUGH! GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM AND CREW!

I have the same thing as your mom (or a similar thing I guess), and I don't know that I can explain it or even understand it myself, but they always seemed really good together, and he seemed good for her kids as well. I really like 'em though!

I always loved this movie since I was a child... It was one of those movies that might come on public TV and we didnt have cable. So I always loved this movie when it came on every so often.
I'm 65. Never have I sat and watched any entertainment that was/is as quotable as Cap'n Ron. It's one quote after the next. Luckily, we had two younger kids and we had regular Cap'n Ron nights. We'd always stand and applaud when he entered at the pier scene. On vacations, we had a game of Cap'N Ron. Each of us would quote a line from the movie. It was a neverending game. Movie Critics are like country preachers, they're just in it for the money and all think they know something you don't. Ask yourself this, Why was Red Skelton so damned popular for over 50 years? Enjoyed seeing him on his 50 year anniversary of a vaudeville show in Birmingham AL in 1978. Silly Sales.
I've never seen this movie but I always remember seeing the trailer on the VHS for either 3 Ninjas or Ernest Scared Stupid and I always remember Martin Short hanging off the sail and going "Captain Ron?! Captain Ron?!?"

Played on TBS a lot in the 90s, and it worked really well in that format. Hard to watch as a whole in one sitting (at least for me), but with commercial breaks or in clip form? Solid entertainment.
My dad was a career navy man who, as a nuclear submariner, had a shitload of time to watch movies. He developed the most insanely massive vhs/dvd collection I’ve ever seen to this day. I was a latchkey kid who never saw my parents much, they were busy working, especially after he got out of the navy. I was left home alone with my little brother, four hours every night during the school year, and all day during summers. Every Monday my dad would pull 10-12 dvd’s off the shelf for us, and we’d watch them throughout the week. Slapshot, all the spaghetti westerns, Captain Ron, Starship Troopers, Stripes, Blazing Saddles, and of course Showgirls; anything that had titties, gunplay, or adult themed jokes. In retrospect, I think he was trying to help us grow up a little without him around as much as he should’ve been. Some summers he’d ship me up to Montana to stay with my grandpa, and we’d watch anything and everything from 1950-1989 together. Between the two of them, I’ve probably seen every cult classic and retro grand slam Hollywood every released. Now they’re both gone and I have kids of my own. We have movie night every Friday, and those little bastards are on my ass all week long about what we’re going to watch. Pops and grandpa would be proud.
When this movie came out one of my best friends went to see it with his family. I always remember it because he loved it when he saw it and recommended it. And he died a few weeks later. R.I.P. joe
I remember my sister renting this movie when I was like 10-11 and we loved it ...it was an absolute gem of a movie...Kurt Russell being one of my favorite action stars and Martin Short(and Steve Martin) being my favorites in comedy with Pure Luck and Clifford at that time ... I always tell people to watch it...i still laugh out loud at some parts when I see it.. can't wait until they add it on HBO or something again...
Lol you gotta be in your 40s or almost 40. I just turned 40 late last year and I love the era of movies you cover. Mid to late 80s to the early to mid 90s. Gotta be my favorite time for movies ever.
One of my "desert island" movies. can watch over and over again. recently played it while my 5 y.o. son was falling asleep, he fell in love with it. One of his first live action movies. I quickly followed up with The Goonies and Ghostbusters.
I just realized who Kurt Russel is. He's the popular, good looking jock who is actually really cool and friendly with _everyone._ I think most of us have known or run across someone like that and it's hard not to like them.
