Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons 1x31 First Time Watching Reaction & Review 

Pure gold reaction to a strong episode. And a very popular one for Captain Magenta fans. 😆

About a month ago, I saw you were reacting to this series and it's one I'd been wanting to see as well. So I dove in on Tubi, and due to a few nights of binge watching, I got ahead of you. That said, my reaction to Rhapsody's "death" was the same as yours; my jaw hit the floor, I scooted to the edge of my seat and threw my arms up. I literally said out loud, "ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?! WE JUST LOST RHAPSODY?!" LOL I genuinely got pissed off at the Mysterons. This episode IMO is hands down the best of the entire series, with the episode set in the Aztec temple being my 2nd favorite. There were actually numerous clues throughout the episode that when I first saw them, they seemed bizarre, but I didn't know what they meant. For example, Captain Magenta repeatedly expresses over-enthusiasm when acknowledging Colonel White's commands and then White doesn't seem to notice this odd behavior. Captain Black being the doctor's assistant, and the scene where Scarlet and Blue are sitting in the lounge being very cavalier despite Cloud Base being on maximum alert and having been identified as the Mysteron's next target. A few other indirect things that may or may not have been intentional, but I found to be a bit "off" in retrospect: Despite knowing Cloud Base is likely to be attacked, White orders only Rhapsody to investigate the blip on the radar; in a maximum alert situation, all Angels would've been scrambled to go take a look. Later, Scarlet's fighter is damaged at the engine, yet he is somehow able to fly all the way back to Cloud Base. These are just my own observations though; they may not have been actual clues.

There was a VHS version of this back in the 90s that reworked the ending and changed it from being a dream to being a real attack that the mysterons reversed once it was done, they basically said ‘you’ve seen what we’re capable of now, so be better or we’ll do this again’

That intro made my morning. The being recreated by the Mysterons bit was already strong, but the call back to your running commentary on their sense of style put it over the top. Barvo.

The production team were clearly thinking of UFO by this time; but in between back then was an oddity called 'Project S.W.O.R.D.', which gets a mention in this episode, but amounted only to a set of comics pages in an Anderson Annual book, and some paper models in book form as well. I had them both as a boy.

I always thought that the Mysterons arranged for Symphony to crash to show her what would happen if they wanted to.

I like to think she was dreaming of real events as they happened and she woke up to the mysteron copies

I feel like Gerry Anderson did one of these in every series he made.

Apart from the Mysteron theme during the Mysteron threat, there are no reused music score in this penultimate episode. All the music was new and was composed for this episode alone, out of Gerry Anderson's pocket. However, some of the score from this episode could been heard in previous two episodes. 1. Symphony Angel falling to the ground and camera pan to a cow skeleton head/ the camera zooming in on the statue of the Sun god to see the homing device activated in *Inferno* 2. The title caption from both this episode and *Codename Europa* 3. Rhapsody Angel saying to Colonel White she going in for closer/ Captain Blue playing with the remote control in *Codename Europa*

4th wall break by Symphony at the end! After the Blakes 7 finale, you can't trust UK TV :)

This was my favourite ALL TIME episode from ANY Gerry Anderson Production! Because I was 9yrs old when I first saw this, and...yes...he fooled me AGAIN with the,dream sequence Damnnit!!! I screamed the house down when Rhapsody died.❤😢❤ i loved her so much. I always knew Captain Blue had a crush on Symphony. Perfect couple. Calm down everybody...theyre just PUPPETS...ARENT THEY? I wonder😮 That sequence where you leaped off the sofa and there was just your cushion left there all alone. Really lung-bustingly hilarious .😂😂. Well done, Alexa. Great dramatic introduction too. You look radiant by the pool. Your best reaction yet. The comedy sketches very well thought out and produced. Cant wait till you get reacting to "Stingray". It goes without saying whom you might want to Cosplay from that!😅

Hi Alexa this series is awesome in billions of ways, and also the modelwork is awesome too . I noticed the man voicing Captain Ochre was Jeremy Wilkin who played villains in classic Dr Who in Revenge of the Cybermen and also Dev Tarrant in the pilot episode of Blake,s Seven the Way Back. This is one series I must consider getting on dvd at sometime.

As someone mentioned I saw it in the 90s BBC run, where they skipped future episodes for sport. This was the last of the run. So we watched all that thinking it was real. As you know, the BBC aren't exactly against killing off the entirety of the main characters.

That was exciting - Alexa goes on location. was that a stunt double in the pool ..or is it your bathtub? LOL .Good news for UK viewers Captain Scarlet is being rerun again on Talking Pictures Ch.82 from June 15 . Alexa's reactions have made me want to see it again after all this time.

It wasn't until Captain Black appeared as Dr. Fawn's assistant that, as a kid, I realised something was wrong. Unlike most "dream" episodes, where it annoys people, i was actually kinda relieved it was.

I don't recall seeing this episode when I was a kid - if I did, it may have helped subconsciously prepare me for B7, years later. When Captain Scarlet was repeated on British TV in the 90s, I'm pretty sure this was shown as the series finale, so I was surprised to find it's the second to last episode - but then again, most of these old TV series were made so you could watch them in any old order. Even though I don't normally like "it was only a dream" episodes, I enjoyed this one. There's a certain amount of mischevious fun to be had watching the good guys get struck down in waves of total disaster. Maybe that means I'm a psycopath - but if I am, I like to think that I'm one of the nice ones.

Hi Alexa, once you've finished next week's episode you might enjoy the making of doc on Scarlet, similarly the ones on UFO and 1999. Those last two I'm thinking of are called The UFO Documentary and The Space:1999 Documentary and were produced by Fanderson when the key players were still with us so could be interviewed.

One thing that might interest you is the conclusion to Captain Scarlet vs. the Mysterons, a compilation of the episodes The Mysterons, Winged Assassin, Seek and Destroy and Attack on Cloudbase (this episode you've just watched) to make them into a television film, making the selected episodes blend together into a longer narrative. The Americans put it out in 1981, along with Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars which compiled Shadow of Fear, Lunarville 7, Crater 101 and Dangerous Rendezvous. The ending to Captain Scarlet vs. the Mysterons' version of Attack on Cloudbase is quite different to what you see in the original episode, albeit with pretty obvious editing, but I think you should give your reaction to that as well as it's quite an interesting what-if scenario. I don't think I should spoil anything here. Even if you have to react to an old RU-vid upload or something, I'd certainly love to see your reaction to it.

So back in 1993 when it was aired on BBC, I was 7 years old and this was at the time arguably the most popular kids show for the weeks it was on, there were toys and VHS videos everywhere. Weirdly instead of putting each episode on to a VHS cassette in volumes, they only did it to all of them aside from 8. The 8 they turned into two movies of 4. This one was lumped in with The Mysterons, Winged Assassin and Seek and Destroy. My grandparents bought me this tape before this episode aired on TV and the ending was ever so slight different. The production company mashed it up to show that they were all killed, but the Mysterons reversed time to give them another chance. By the time this episode did air I was like 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ it was a dream ?

Was Symphony still dreaming when she saw Destiny flying overhead?? The scenes ethier side of Destiny flying over the desert show Symphony laying unconscious "or" is it possible that Symphony mysteriously woke up from potentially fatal heatstroke...saw Destiny fly over and ignore her and then passed out again?? P.s how did Symphony actually manage to wake up/recover just as Scarlet and Blue arrive 😳??

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. The Anderson’s did it in UFO with Paul Foster falling asleep in the sauna in the episode ordeal. And space 1999 did it in the episode wargames where they were made to think they were being attacked by their own fears.

I heartily recommend the definitive 1952 film of The Importance of Being Earnest, if you have not already watched it, which is sheer class and infinitely more charming than any other adaption.

Great intro and I was totally taken in by the story. Actually a shame it was just a dream it would have been really brave to lose most of the team and Cloudbase, sort of beating Marvel to it by decades!

Another great reaction Alexa, after new week I'm really looking forward to seeing your New Captain Scarlet reactions! Though if you can manage it, I'd highly recommend watching the short minisode Captain Scarlet and the Return of the Mysterons in between. It's not essential, but it's a fun semi-bridge between the two shows.

There is an alternative ending to this episode in the (arguably non-canon) compilation film from the eighties, which I'll leave with you below. I Don't think it's a spoiler at all. Now this story is one I definitely remember. It's only a dream episodes are really frustrating and this might have been my first experience of one growing up. 😁

Cruel but effective. I don't know if I ever saw this before, but I certainly didn't remember it. I'm not a fan of "it was only a dream," episodes though, it just seems like time wasting, so this one ends up being disappointing. It's funny how the human brain can function in a crisis though, and how you are able to compartmentalise things and carry on, instead of being reduced to a gibbering wreck.

Like the way this story gets weirder and then stops making sense; a sort of clue. But does Symphony really wish Rhapsody was dead? Hard to credit.

Hello again Alexa very frustrating these Dream Episodes arent they? and there is one in every Anderson Series barring "The Protectors & " Space 1999 Year Two". Ive never ever liked them myself and never will. The only redeeming feature about "Attack On Cloudbase" is that because it is only a dream its quite amusing watching the main characters behaving strangely and seemingly out of character. Definitely not a favourite for me.

Unfortunately Gerry Anderson pulled this trick on most of the shows he made. It annoyed me when I was a child watching these shows.
