In this video, I restore and colourise an 1862 photograph of former slaves, freed by the Union Army during the American Civil War.
I show my restoration and colouring methods using Photoshop and I also talk more broadly about the image and my thoughts on it. I also talk about my feelings on how Artificial Intelligence will change both image restoration and colourisation moving forwards.
More can be found about the original photograph here: www.loc.gov/resource/cwpb.01005/

You did a remarkable job on the photograph! As an African-American, I have ancestors who were slaves and colorized images like this gives me a better feeling for the humanity and reality, in the present day, of those persons from history.

Hello from Canada. Although purists seem doggedly against colourization, the process makes a profound impact upon society by making the past more accessible emotionally - especially to younger people who did not grow up with B&W. Thank you for what you do and for sharing your projects with us. Cheers.

Thank you very much for your support and thoughtful message! My goal is always to try and bridge the gap between the modern world and the old, not to try and improve on or replace the original photograph. I actually have had quite a few comments saying that adding colour has made the people in the pictures seem 'real' or 'alive again' and that always makes me happy as that reviving of the subjects is what I enjoy the most about the process. Funnily enough, as a slight tangent, I think what some people dislike about colourisation is exactly that we make the past more emotionally accessible? I've seen people get really upset and angry before with other peoples colourisations of emotionally raw subjects from the past, particularly war pictures, and they leave comments like "Why didn't you leave this horrible picture in the past!". People can see an event, even an upsetting one, which has been famously documented in B&W and the second it's coloured people are transported back to that moment and suddenly become disturbed by an image they may have seen and ignored hundreds of times previously. It's like a really weird magic trick, which you can create in a few hours in Photoshop. J

Wow, you are too humble, you did an extremely good job. I grew up in America (Virginia) and have studied that era for decades, we were immersed in it at schools, and I think it is extremely accurate. Well done.

As a colourist myself, I had much joy of hearing your arguments for working on the photo, both in colouring choices, the historic accuracy, and actually see some of the toools you are using. We all have our methods when working on photos, but the basics are very often the same. A good chance for learning something new. However, to be stressed because you're out of time, the result may very often not be as good as you planned. For myself, I always give myself a lot of time, and are very seldom pushed to make a photo finished just to please someone else, just because they want to buy it. I take my time, and even let the finished photo stay in a maturing condition, for some days. I look on the result with new eyes, and find errrors I have made. Probably because I was too attached to some details, or worked in late hours and became weary of it all after the first round. I also go back to previous photos, and try to make them better in a version 2, 3 or more, and I think the result improves every time, because I have learnt a thing or two on colourisation. BTW, I really appreciate your work!

I agree, I think the worst thing that can happen is to find yourself in the 'Endless March' stage of a project. I'm glad that I worked on this picture but i can't say the process of working with it was particularly enjoyable in the exact way that I worked on it. I think had I worked as you do, and taken breaks from it to work on other images, i may have found the process a bit less stressful. Thank you for your thoughtful comment and I also like your work! :)

Beautifully done! (As always;-) I'd love it if you restored and colorised an image from the Spanish Civil War.

Thank you so much and thank you for the suggestion! It's certainly something i'd consider for the future. I will say that as things get a bit closer to the modern day I sometimes find it harder to know how best to present these pictures? Particularly when it's something that I worry I that i'm not that well informed in and might upset people accidentally with how i choose to tell the story behind a picture? THAT BEING SAID, as I talked about in the President video, I view these pictures as an opportunity to learn about a time in history and improve my knowledge of it and given my knowledge of the Spanish Civil War is somewhat lacking, working on a picture from it would certainly be useful for me from an education point of view. :)

What a wonderful, moving photo. I also find your approach to restoring/colorizing it moving. I think this was a wonderful choice, and you've done an admirable job on it. I'm going to share this on Facebook, as I think it needs a much wider audience. From one James to another, thank you very much for sharing this with all of us.

Thank you so much for your very thoughtful comment, and for sharing the video! :) Sharing videos is so, so helpful for building a RU-vid channel and while I never get given any personal information, obviously, for who has shared my videos, or to whom, I'm always happy when RU-vid tells me a % of my viewers are coming from WhatsApp or similar as I know someone has taken the time to recommended my video out to someone. So I do really appreciate it! And yes, us James's have to stick together! :D

Thanks for a thoughtful experience with your colourisation process. Just curious, if the b/w image was changed to perhaps sepia of sorts than both colourised along with the use of a minimal high contrast mask to bring edge sharpness would it have a meaningful impact on the outcome? I did years ago hand colourisaton of b/w photos and I would print them on the warmest paper I could find as well as about a half contrast level lower than normal. This was a great canvas and looked far more natural than colourising black/white/grey values. Thoughts? I am in the States and considering for personal satisfaction and added income to get into both restoration/retouch and colourising. Your work inspires me.

Thank you! Honestly, I'm not sure and I think it would depend on working methods? When I first started I would often work with CDV's and other usually naturally sepia images and I found that making the colours look natural was quite tricky unless I had completely removed any existing colour tint to begin with as i would be having to try and counter the existing tint when i picked colours. I think it would depend a lot of which exact method of colourisations you're using. For my method these days I'm using the 'Color' blend mode on a layer. It completely replaces any underlying colour with your chosen painted colour, therefore any tints in the image will be replaced. For the most part I keep, throughout the process, adjusting the contrast of the black and white image until I get one that feels natural to me. I can completely understand the need to adjust the values in advance when painting on real paper as obviously the ability to constantly tweak the contrast wouldn't exist. I would completely 100% recommend getting into it again and I'd say check out R/ Colorization on Reddit as the community there is really good. :)

I love the picture the colorization made the people and the era and what the people were going through . I love black history especially at the slavery time and the lives of the enslaved is my focus time .the free people as we’ll Iam so fascinated with everything about the south how people lived in that era it seems unreal at times but it was and is real . Seeing it in color helps to see and feel it better it brings it too life .so make more colorization on and in the historical era . Very fascinating

It is really amazing how comparatively close it is historically to where we are now. As I was colouring this image that fact became ever more true to me. Thank you for your comment!

I'm afraid i'm not currently doing private commissions at this moment in time. I don't know if you've checked out r/colorizationrequests on Reddit before but i'd recommenced going on there if you're looking for someone to colour a picture, as you can put up [Paid] requests and have people message you rates for a picture/check out their work. Also there are actually some pretty decent people on there who are completely happy to do them for free. Sorry I can't be more helpful. J
