Car Camping in EXTREME COLD with New Heater | Winter Camping in an SUV

I test out my new InstaFire Vesta canned heat heater with thermal fan on a very cold night while car camping in the woods. From my experience the InstaFire Vesta is a very good option as an emergency heat and cooking source and a pretty good choice even as a main heat source while car camping in the winter.

Guys, it's actually much cheaper then I stated in video for these canned heats, it had been awhile since I bought some so I forgot price. I recommend these ones I used in video as even for only buying 12 at once it's like $2 per canned heat. Should be cheaper if you buy more at once. Here's link amzn.to/4brNORq

I just returned from a 5 day. Winter camp out in the arrowhead region in northern Minnesota . I have a 5 / 8 homemade insulated camper. That I pull behind my Jeep. I use a small electric heater for overnight and put a 25 foot cord on my generator and move it away from the camper. I burn under a gallon of gas for 8 hour overnight. This keeps me cozy warm and 100% safe without danger of carbon monoxide. Cost about $3 per night for that energy. Thanks for your video and let's keep on camping 😊

If you have a sams club membership, the 6 hrs heat cans is a 12 pack for $20 and free shipping.. costco might have something similar if not sams club. So $20 for 24hrs of heat isn't too bad but if its $5 a can, $60 for 24hrs of heat is a tad much.

Less expensive way is to use a Mr. Buddy or Little Buddy heater. They are rated "indoor safe" and less hassle, and mess than this system. I use the 1-pound Coleman fuel tanks and then refill them from the large propane tanks. By refilling the large tanks and then using the large ones to refill the one pound tanks, the cost per 4 to 6 hours of heat is only about $1.50, (vs $15 for the system you are using), and there are not all the empty cans and smoke to deal with that you showed in your video. The Mr. Buddy products are rated "indoor safe" and my carbon monoxide barely rises in its reading at all over the time I'm using the heater inside my vehicle. For extra safety I do keep a fire extinguisher in my vehicle, like you do.

Hey friend, use that snuffer. I experiment with different ways to heat the space around where I use my computer here in my house located in southern MN. I tried a Dollar Store can of heet some days ago. The length of time before it started to smell bad was minimal. When I decided to put it out, I used the can's cover and pushed it down with a screw driver. A few seconds later, I jumped at the sound of an explosion. The top had blown off! Better a little bad smell than an explosion:) Also, probably best not to depend on Dollar Store Heet cans:)
@Greg_M1
@Greg_M1 4 месяца назад
Yeah, good point about putting the lid on before the can has completely cooled down. In principle, I'd think that if you put the lid on while it's still hot, you'd be more likely to have an implosion rather than an explosion. But then, your experience suggests otherwise.

I've heard that you can just put pasta in room temp water and it will rehydrate, just over a longer period of time than with boiling water. If you had started your meal that way, earlier in the day, you might have been able to just warm the macaroni and water to 180 degrees or so and then finished with the other ingredients without generating so much steam and condensate. Would get your forced air heater back on line sooner also. Just a thought. If you snuff the cans out, one at a time, while keeping the screw lid handy, maybe you could have snuffed a can and capped it, then move to the next one to minimize the smoke.

I think that you'll find that it's recommended that you pull out the wick on those heat cans a small amount and then fluff and flatten them to a 3/4" to 1" diameter before you light them. That gives the fastest start up of the fan and the highest btu per hour output.

I truly appreciate how you continue to test various methods and tools for staying warm (enough) in the car at night. This device (the InstaFire) is very interesting, and effective. I do note that the fuel cans are way way way too expensive to be practical for all night coverage, or, in my opinion, even one 6-hr stint. Hmmm. Wondering if there are cheaper alternatives. Also wondered about carbon monoxide. I know you carry a CO monitor. And, yep, indoor condensation is a beast. The only way to get rid is to prevent it by keeping windows partially cracked open, but then it's -10 inside. Ugh. But frozen condensation on all surfaces is a bitch in the morning. Thanks again for your efforts. If you had a Buy Me a Coffee link, I'd donate. Then again, you must be financially OK what with all the gear your buy. Cool!

I live in my Xterra SUV. I have a 100 watt 1/8" thick flexible mono crystalline solar panel glued and mounted on the hood, and two 100 watt Renogy hard solar panels on my roof rack, and a 200 watt solar suitcase from Goal Zero charging my Goal Zero Yeti 1500X. So I have a total of 500 watts of electricity per hour charging my Yeti 1500X, which then runs my 125 watt electric blanket all night long. I usually only run it for 6 hours before I have to turn it off bc I get too hot and sweaty. Guys STOP heating the air around your sleeping bag or bedding--- that's a totally inefficient way to stay warm. Instead, use the direct heat of an electric blanket that directs the heat right onto your body. And it's free heat, given to you freely from God each day in the form of solar energy. No more $2-$4 cans, no more $6 propane bottles, no more $6 butane bottles. FREE HEAT, FREE ENERGY. You guys that insist on using heat from different sources of heat and spending 'bucco bucks' on heat sources might as well just go pay $20 to $25 for an electric camp site. If it gets too cold for me and I want to heat the air around me inside my car, I just pull out my 250 watt little electric space heater and plug it into my additional Goal Zero Yeti 1400 watt solar generator. Easy Peasy!! Matt, install a roof rack on that Durango, then throw up several solar panels on that roof rack, then buy a Goal Zero or EcoFlo Solar generator and a regular household electric blanket. Sunbeam makes a good one. If you are worried that you will destroy your 'Stealthiness', know this, Stealth Camping is a myth, every cop can readily tell if someone is sleeping in a car, no matter how much or how little attachments you have on the roof or the back of your car or van. If a guy has a totally clean vehicle with no roof rack, or no other attachments, all the cop has to do to find out if someone is sleeping in their car is look at the condensation on the windows during the winter. And even in the summer when most car or vanlife people place window covers on their windows, the cop will see this and know there's someone sleeping in their car or van, so 'Stealth' is a complete myth. Go SOLAR, paste those solar panels all over your car or van and you'll be glad you did when you discover that you'll stay warm in -20F weather, and you'll stay cool in the summer. And you'll have all the power you need to run a FRIG, and maybe even an induction cooktop---at no cost!

That's really expensive "heat" considering it was 32 degrees in the morning. I'd only consider using it in extreme emergency situations.

Would love to see you start the morning off with an ice bath. Hop out on a lake some time for us? Also, glad to see you didn't slip on the macaroni water!
