Car Canopy Anchors that Lift and Absorb Shock

This project does three things: 1) anchors the canopy yet it can be moved, 2) adds shock absorption to help it handle wind gusts better, and 3) lifts it higher to enable use by a taller vehicle. NOTES: This lasted for several years and survived some pretty hard winds, but not snow! I put clothes line quality rope in an X pattern from the top of the back posts to the bottom of the middle posts and visa versa to add rigidity. I also put similar line with a clip, for quick removal, from the tops of the back and front poles to the spare tier rack or bumper for similar rigidity side to side. I did not find the shock absorption bungies were that much help. The cinder blocks seemed to be enough weight when wind tried to make a sail of the canopy, but they could be dragged. I drilled small holes in the concrete driveway, dropped in a big nail, then set the blocks back over the nail sticking up into the bottom of the PVC pipes coming through the blocks which kept the blocks from being dragged. After 3 tarps rotted out in the sun over the last years, I have now given up and installed a metal roof car port!

Personally very impressed with your doing the project despite injuries. Thanks for the project and the inspiration. Hope all is well with you and your family

Another cool thing about this system is that if you do end up replacing the entire frame and canopy, it looks like you can reuse these blocks

This might be a good idea for my harbor, freight garage in a box. I could use this to anchor the thing to the ground👍😊 i’ve got flat concrete block on the legs of the garage right now however, that’s still not heavy enough in a windstorm. Maybe these would be I don’t know. Looks like a pretty good idea though I would probably just use the quickset post concrete just put it in there and get it wet👍

Interesting. I had my poles into 6 - 5 gallon buckets full of concrete. Thinking they were 100lbs each. My goal was to raise the canopy above an adjacent shed door. No shock absorbers though. Right away got a 50 mph wind come through that started lifting the legs up and contorting the frame poles. That was enough for my experiment. One of my poles dented a car fender in the process.

First video I've watched in my quest for weighting down canopy legs project. This one is pretty cool system for sure. Wondering if it can be adjusted for not-straight angled temporary pop-up canopy covers.

prety cool but in a oklahoma wind them cinder blocks become projectiles yer screwed. i just put one of these up and used an auger type stake . theres nothing gonna stop the oklahoma wind and if im gonna lose property id rather it be just the canopy than have it bash in windows or dent up the car . thanks for the clever insight though

Thanks! Just an added note, I had great luck with the frame of this cheap canopy, with my added beef-up's, including wind issues--just not snow! However, I have become tiered of replacing the covers which just rot in the sun. I am right now assembling its replacement, an all metal carport at the tune of about 2 grand.

Not bad. I would have used the black rubber type bungie cords. Also, those white bungie ball tie down that comes with it are junk, there are better ones on the market. Looks great though.

Great idea!! More people should know about this! How's it holding up in 2021? Unfortunately, it's too late for me, I've already anchored mine into my concrete driveway :( Still looking for more ways to stabilize it though.

I wonder if it snows at your location, and how you can snow proof this canopy. I've been taking a rack and clearing the snow off it, but that's not a long term solution.

What year is your RT? And was the spare tire carrier already on, or did you install it? I have a '92 Dodge 190P where the tire's inside and it takes up a ton of storage space, would love to move it outside.

2000D190P, I got it with the spare carrier. It works, but over so many years, the weight is causing the door to sag a bit and it drags on the threshold.

Where did you get the canopy, and is the frame made entirely of pvc? Thanks
@samqui323
@samqui323 2 года назад
Canopy is from Amazon (I had a gift certificate--the same thing can be bought many places). There is no PVC in the frame, it is all metal. The PVC pipe is my mounting method on the concrete bases. I have learned a lot and made several modifications over several years. Ask if interested in more details!

@@samqui323 thanks for the response. I was considering a pre fabricated car port from amazon, i wanted to put it adjacent to my garage and fit it under the eves about 8' clearance, but they are too tall. And i worry about the wind. I live in so cal and sometimes we get santa anna winds , which can blow 40+. So i am at the decision point of either going with a pre fab or making my own custom frame out of wood or 1.5 inch pvc. Then i could just get a tarp to cover it. My wife's not crazy about me building my own frame, she thinks it would look too tacky. I don't want to pay a contractor 20k+ and deal with building codes. Geez, all this just to protect my new car from frying in this socal heat!

great tutorial! how's this holding up a year later?
@samqui323
@samqui323 5 лет назад
Actually, pretty well! It's survived some pretty powerful winds, and I wasn't all that optimistic about that! Biggest problem is the little bungee loops with plastic balls that came with the canopy to hold the white cover onto the frame--they are stretching out and disintegrating! I did add one feature not shown here: I strung clothesline style rope from the top of one corner leg, down to the bottom of the middle leg, then back up to the top of the leg at the opposite end (both sides). Tighten theses snugly. It adds some strength in strong winds that used to torque the frame back and forth and even drag the concrete blocks!

@@samqui323 From what you're describing, it seems like something I was going to try to do to stabilize mine which is already bolted into the concrete. I was going to run a steel cable in like a crisscross pattern between the metal poles to help stabilize it more. That's the cheapest and most efficient thing I can think of off hand.

How long did it last
@samqui323
@samqui323 Год назад
It's still there, working fine! This last winter, with a couple inches of very wet snow, it got so heavy it kinked the ridge polls--repaired easily. It has handled some pretty nasty wind over the years, but I have developed an effective guy rope plan to add structural stability.

ANOTHER ONE THAT DID NOT SHOW THE CANOPY ROLLING INTO THE STREET WHEN A 40 MPH GUST TAKES THAT HORIZONTAL SAIL AND SAILS IT. THOSE BUNGEES WILL SNAP LIKE RUBBER BANDS AND THAT CANOPY HAS LIFTED ME OFF THE GROUND IN 25 MPH WINDS. I'M 175 LBS. I LOOKED LIKE MARY POPPINS WITH A CANOPY!
@samqui323
@samqui323 4 года назад
Haven't shown it because it doesn't happen. And yes, it's seen many a heavy wind--has been up 3 years now. I'm glad to share extra measures I've taken to help that, with someone who's actually trying to do something.
@samqui323
@samqui323 4 года назад
@dimebag Darrell I tied clothes line style rope from the top of the corner posts down to the bottom of the center post, on each side, creating triangles. This added a good deal of strength in wind, and are there permanently. If I expect extraordinary wind, I have two more rope segments secured to the top of the back two posts which I bring over to the spare tire rack temporarily. This gives great lateral stability.

@@samqui323 I'm a big fan of the HF Orange Ratchet Straps 😁 I picked up a set just for bracing my canopy. And the added safety orange will (hopefully) keep me from tripping over them. Great idea with the blocks and bungees. Any issues with rain collecting in the 10'spans of canopy? Did you do any other reinforcement of the frame?
@samqui323
@samqui323 Год назад
@@_GntlStone_ No problem with rain, but wet snow was too much! Get it off before it collects!! Yes, I ran close line type rope in an X pattern between the top and bottom of two leg poles on each side. Much stronger. I also ran lines from the top of the rear poles to the spare tire rack with easy disconnect clips when needing to back out. I've had very little trouble with wind this way.
