I am certain it really depends what kind of tree the sap came from. Some tree sap is waxy like the Carnuba Palm, or some fruit trees... but there is Fir and Pine which is extremely sticky or hard. Pine Tar and tree Pitch or Resin. These dissolve easily in turpentine, but I do not know the effect it would have on car paint.

Maple tree sap washes off with water, Pine tree sap ONLY comes off with Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, dilute to 12% so you don't damage the paint.

Yes, apparently British sap is weenie sap. Here in the US Pacific Northwest, sap from a Douglas-fir tree only comes off with isopropyl alcohol.

I have never seen water being able to dissolve tree sap. What kind of trees do you have over there? I usually use a mix or alcohol based hand sanitizer and IPA. The sanitizer is like a gel so it allows the solvent to stay on the sap. Takes about a minute to dissolve it then I come in with a microfiber towel with a little more of the solution on it and wipe it away.
@mlstrib
@mlstrib 2 года назад
Me either. 100% doesn't work on thick wet pine sap. Your recipe here is exactly what I used this week, about 5 to 1 ratio. So glad I found it! Worst sap I'd ever seen. 4 years of parking daily just feet beside the trunks of a row of pine trees. Top surfaces were layers of sap, mold and mildew, wood bits, pine needles and more sap. After repeated foamings and high pressure washes, used microfiber and mesh bug sponge to begin cleaning organic material from droplets one by one.. then a stiff, smooth edged card to lift final bits of material that were embedded in droplets and thankfully this makes for less sap to dissolve. Took me about 20 hours to fully detail, interior, just get exterior decontaminated to where I can machine polish. But this said the vehicle is in such good condition it was worth the trouble. This added a ton if resale value. Wish I could post a picture here. Keep sharing that sap recipe. FWIW Malco makes a sprayable product name SAP with methanol, isopropanol, alkyl benzoate that looks great but it can only be purchased at suppliers so far as I know, by the $45 gallon. Cheers

@@mlstrib Glad it worked for you. I have upgraded to something that works even better now... alcohol gel for fondue burners. It's super cheap and it's more effective than the mix I used before. Might want to grab a bottle if you ever face hard to remove sap again.

A guy that I used to work with in a detail shop always used laquer thinner to get rid of sap, it actually worked really well. It always quickly desolved the sap. This was of course after he had already washed the car with water. I worry now though that while removing the sap it also removed the clear coat... Any thoughts?

Oh man, I wish you posted this last week... Car was covered in tiny spots. I pulled out my foldable cart, along with half a dozen different chemicals including citrus degreaser, spray 9 degreaser, 3D's APC 5:1, IPA (diluted to ~50%)... The IPA appeared to do the best job. So I sprayed the whole damn car down with my IPA solution, rinsed, and proceeded with a touch wash.

Happy to report that this video will likely save my arms and my wallet. I have a "mist of hard spots" all over our car, and nothing would make it budge. Didn't want to wash it originally, as it was washed less than 24 hours ago. Just did a test spot on the glass with a damp towel and voila! Gone! Goo gone and tar remover didn't touch it. Car pro eraser was working, but still needed elbow grease. 5 years later, thank you!

Thanks again for great video. I was surprised that normal water works. Unfortunately we have little bit more difficult problem in Finland. do you have any idea? It seems to be Aphididae waste which is falling for cars. After normal wash i can feel that paintwork is not smooth. All horizontal surfaces are coated with something sticky. Tar & glue removers would not work, any petrol solvants do nothing. Clay mitt or clay bar is the 2 working solutions i know. Unfortunately both are not so coating safe products to use.. We have 2 cars which we have to leave sometimes under trees, and it is so stupid to do mad work with clay mitt many times / summer.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 лет назад
the the aphididae waste or honeydew which should normally be water soluable. I would try to avoid removing this stuff by abrasion if you can... So if its not water soluable you might want to see if a solvent based paintwork cleaner effects it. Even something like limonene can be worth trying.. or a specific SAP remover detailing product. The trick is to try and find what disolves it.. proper tree sap generally wont break down from water but 99% of times its honeydew like in this video.

So i tried your method of removing sap off my car windscreen/paint work and just water alone didn’t work. Maybe it’s because I live in an area with hard water I don’t know. I Tried all sorts to get it off clay, paint cleaners, tar and glue remove, to no avail so I gave up and finished the car off. I applied Rainx rain repellent in the windows and it came off so I tried it on the paint work and it also came off so I found rainx rain repellent is good for removing tree sap.

that's great for removing sap from deciduous trees like lime trees, but for pine tree sap it's not going to work at all. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to deal with that one using something that both works on the sap and won't damage the clear coat. cheers
@keithforbis4795

Pine sap is exactly what I'm dealing with right now, and like you said, water definitely won't do it. Dawn dish soap won't do it... neither will Dupli-Color wax and grease remover. Isopropyl alcohol does work well, but it evaporates quickly, so I'm going to try some hand sanitizer soap. It has alcohol in it, but won't evaporate so quickly. Apparently mineral spirits work well also.

A fabric steamer and microfiber towel works great. We have pine trees that are always dropping sap. It makes a mess. You will NEVER get pine sap off with just water. Steam heats the water and melts the sugars , making the sap soft and easy to remove. I don't know what trees you have but thats not pine tree sap.

Just come across this vid, so sorry this is late to the party. My Son's car had been parked under a tree for months until it was black in many parts with dirt stuck to layers of tree sap. Nothing I tried would easily shift it until a neighbour came around with a bucket and said try this. What a miracle! Just whipped it off. And this miracle substance-hot water with a dishwasher tablet dissolved in it. Wear washing up gloves though if you try it.

Water didn’t work on mine. Firstly, it had no protection on it which makes things worse - but anyway, 2xValetPro Snow Foam rinse between and after. The sap was totally untouched. Tried GTechniq tar & glue, super resin polish, autoglym engine cleaner, clay - not even close as it has been baked on for a while. Started with a soft Vikan brush but ended up using the Vikan nail brush which got it off but marred the paintwork (doesn’t matter, old less-than-perfect red E46 that was due a machine polish anyway - the sap tendered parts of it black). I then went on to decontaminate - now, I have another car next to it in a similar state (also unprotected but has been machine polished). My first decontam is tar & glue followed by Korrosol. Korrosol was the one I hadn’t tried for sap removal, so on the second car I did and it softened the sap really well allowing it to be powerwashed off. Good news as I didn’t really want to redo the machine polishing on the second car. I have another but that has 3xAutoglym HD and the sap isn’t as bad. Hopefully water will work on that but if not - I guess korrosol and rewax.

Use Dawn Dish soap and a little hot water, soak tissue paper with that dish soap mixture, slap the tissue on your car body, let soak over night or even a couple of days. Can repeat with fresh dish soap soaked tissue paper for second application for another day or two. It loosens and softens the tree sap. Same principles as soaking pots in the kitchen. It worked for my BMW which had tough tree sap stuck on the paint for 2 years.

Great vid as always. Must admit I have to park under a tree from time to time and you get the dust mixing in with the sap and the surface feels like sandpaper. The glass type beads were there to stay, so I started trawling through You Tube videos and found one by a guy called Chris Fix, who had an array of products lined up, including peanut butter and tried each one in turn. The one that really started to work was hand sanitiser and this was followed by rubbing alcohol, which did an amazing job. So I went to a local supermarket and bought a large bottle of sanitiser for just over £4 and within 30 minutes my roof and the bonnet were completely clear. I had done a test on an inconspicuous spot first. It would seem that alcohol is the key ingredient for sap removal, particularly pine etc. Cheap as chips and I still have about 95% of the bottle left.

I don't know which trees you got there, but water alone doesn't work here. I use Motip Tar and Resin remover. It leaves no residue. Spray it on the resin(treesap) and let it work for 3-5 minutes and then with a sponge or mitt soaked in warm water and take it off.

Surprised how bad tree sap is. Was surprised when you just got water and that took it off. Happy that I don't park under trees when they are doing their funky thing 😂

For about the first five minutes, I was convinced that you were building up to a big sell of the greatest product ever made for removing tar, sap, and bugs. Turned out, you WERE promoting the "Universal Solvent." Who'd have thought? Thank you for this great video!

There are many types of tree sap. Of course time and temperature can develop more challenges. Water and soap do not cure many sap situations. Alcohol removes most. For sap that has been hardened for weeks or months, allow the alcohol to soften the sap for minutes, then use a soft wood to eliminate. When sap removed, wash with soap, rinse well, and apply a car wax.

I use Tardis everyday almost perfect for removing of sticker glue and bubble gum off glass and even black carpet. G101 I don't think would work but I have never tried it. Fallout remover should work. I think I would have tried hot soapy water first to be honest. Another great video there jon 👍

Thanks for that tip LNS. I had chewing gum stuck on my carpet which some lazy person must of threw on the floor and it got stuck on my shoe and onto the carpet. I tried removing it by hand but had little reminents of it which was deep in the carpet. Also don't listen to the top comment ^^^

Zain K yeah Tardis work great for chewing gum in carpet. I just spray a bit directly on to the gum and rub in small circular motion and it just disappears and that's on any colour carpet too. Glad I could help 👍 Yeah that top comment I just ignored it 🙄

note the crap on the car in this video is whats called honeydew or aphid crap. sticky brown residue and the aphids are on the trees. This crap is water soluable. If you get like the treekle like stuff that comes out of the branches, it probably wont be water soluable. But in short if you think you have zap on the car, just wash it first. 95% of the time that will sort it if its honeydew. if not then a mineral spirit type remover product is the way to go.

Took my aunts car to get washed in London and had to park it on the street under trees that evening. Next morning it looks like someone has poured a honey and lemonade cocktail all over it.

I guess it all depends on the tree, as the sap I have on my jeep does not come off with just water, I even tried high pressure water at the car wash and nothing so I'll be using just alcohol.

Great video fella! I’m surprised that even worked, the tree sap we get from the pine trees are like huge boobs of sticky glue, rinsing, prewashinf and washing simply doesn’t touch them!!! I’ve always washed the car (usual process) then used CarPro tarX, spray leave to dwell for a moment then gently agitate it with a mf cloth, shortly after the blobs have gone and I reward those sections...
