In this video, I explain car waxes versus car sealants, and I demonstrate how they are applied, when they are applied, and the visual difference between them! Can you apply a car sealant and wax? Do you apply a car sealant before or after a wax? All these questions and more are answered with this video! In the auto detailing world, the words sealant and wax are used very interchangeably, however they are different, so for beginner detailers this can be very frustrating! I aim to clear up the confusion in car waxes vs car sealants, by explaining and demonstration the difference between a wax and sealant. Check out this video, and never be confused again on the difference between a car sealant and car wax!

You do a good job of explaining the obvious to the oblivious. That's a compliment. To be able to explain a thing in its base components in context that is easy to understand seems to be a hard thing to do. I've been an instructor/teacher of several things in my life and it takes a certain level of understanding and comprehension to be able to convey an idea and/or concept. Good job. And I like the idea of a sealant and then a hard wax. Looks good there and is what I'm going to do to my new GMC Terrain, right after a clay down.

White residue from compounds, polishes, sealants or wax on textured trim??? One of the great mysteries of detailing is that pretty much all waxes and sealants say to avoid textured plastic or rubber trim. We’ve all done it. It’s nearly impossible to avoid at least some overlap. Especially if you’re using a buffer. I can’t remember which product I used when I figured this out but the white residue that was left on my trim would not come off. We’re talking using a toothbrush with soap and water, isopropyl alcohol, denatured alcohol and out of desperation I even tried a Q-tip with acetone. Nothing would touch it. So I decided to proceed with refreshing the plastic trim with Mother’s Back to Black. Completely removed the white residue no problem. Beat to avoid overlapping onto those textured trim areas but if you do, Back to Black has your back.

I think doing the hood would have been better for a comparison but I think the paste wax looked better compared to the spray wax. Great video I actually didn’t know the in depth difference between a wax and sealant.

A sealant actually fills in the paint's pores, because although it feels smooth, paint is still porous unless it's "sealed." A good sealant should ALWAYS leave it looking like it just got a great clay barring and wax job. I may be a girl, but I grew up in the car business and cars are "kind of" my thing... HAHA! Sealants can last for many years depending on the product (plus depending on the company they're can be great warranties- we had one with a seven year warranty and it really did work). Although I had all my cars sealed (fabric done and fully undercoated as well) prior to delivery, I still chose to wax it at least every 4-6 months depending on the weather, just to give it an extra glossy finish. I mean, when you're spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a new vehicle, why not protect it. I always do everything to protect my vehicles because I did have issues the one time I didn't (paint, and the engine pulled out of my...UGHHHH) They do recommend after sealing it though, to let it sit for a good solid 24hrs, so the product can cure and be there best it can be. I wouldn't recommend people wax it immediately following a sealant though, give it a day or two at least. 😊
@soulsweet17
@soulsweet17 6 лет назад
Kathgoose R what sealant would you recommend?
@goose7574
@goose7574 6 лет назад
@@soulsweet17 that's hard to say. My family owns a new car dealership, so I've always had it done through them. They've used either Zurich shield (paint sealant, fabric protection and undercoating), or a new one that's used a jets called Cilajet. I haven't had it done for like 4 years, so I wouldn't know what to recommend right now. Let me ask you this, what type of vehicle are you going to put it on? And what color/type of paint do you have (flat glossy paint, metallic, pearlescent, etc). Also, is this your daily driver? And lastly do you want to apply it yourself, or are you looking to have it professionally done (both options will make certain products available differently). Sorry for all the questions, but this will help me try to figure it out.

I agree with u about the application method...however Scott from Dallas paint correction makes a good point that most retail waxes are cleaner waxes. These cleaner waxes have abrasives that need to be activated by going in a circular motion. Now a regular non-cleaner wax can be applied either in straight lines or circular...doesn't matter

Hey Luke, first off... just wanted to say I love what your channel is doing in the car detailing community, creating an open door to the producers and consumers. I wanted to address one point you claimed in your video. I wanted to clarify as to why most people say to apply waxes in a straight line, versus in a circular fashion. The reason you should apply any wax/sealant in a straight line is because should there be any surface contaminants dragged around the paint, or if the microfiber on the applicator is melted (due to improper washing/drying of the applicator) , scratches are more difficult to spot if they are a straight line, rather than is a circular pattern (swirl). Next, linear scratches are less difficult to take out most of the time, so therefor you level less of the clear coat. Detailing, paint correcting, and so many other variants of car care is without one of the most controversial topics in society, because everyone wants to seem like they know the most about what they are talking about. I'm not trying to sound like that person, but I figured I would chime in and maybe start a discussion... thoughts?
@wilsonautodetailing
@wilsonautodetailing 6 лет назад
Hey man, thanks for your encouragement and the thoughts! Totally valid on all of that! The point I was making was just that if you are waxing and getting scratches you have a whole new and different problem on your hands! So yes to all of that

I wash my car with Chemical Guys EcoSmart RU waterless wash and wax, when it's not too dirty otherwise it's two bucket method.. And the EcoSmart always leaves it looking nice and protected, sometimes I would do it three times a week 😁.. but just last month after using the EcoSmart I used some Chemical Guy's V7 sealant, and let me tell you...what a difference it made I mean it just looks like a new paint job It's really unbelievable I wish I used this stuff years ago. I find myself wiping the car now once a week now because it's always so clean looking. The point is i wish I used sealant a long time ago.🙃

When I bought my vehicle new it had paint sealant on it. I kept it for ten years, it was white, and i never washed it. It remained clean all the time except where I found some spots above the grille that might have been bugs or road tar. I stupidly used a compound (Color Back...good product in the hands of a sane person) on that area and it became dirty every time I turned around. It remained a dirty stripe across the front until I got rid of the vehicle. Paint sealants are a must. Mine lasted for over ten years.

You need to try Carpro Reload. Best sealant on the market I've used. Regardless of what sealant you use, the prep work is the key. Paint must be washed, clayed/clay alternative, iron decontamination performed, then wiped with IPA 10-15%, or Carpro Eraser. Then apply your sealant. Protection products bond better to properly prepped paint.

Omg I wish I knew this before! I was given a green1997 Mitsubishi Technica when I graduated high school. Long story short, I would wash and wax that car every weekend with a carnauba wax from a brand called turtle wax. I also used their liquid product to wash the car. The thing is that I was living kind of close to the beach and also the car was sleeping outside. I was also told by a friend who happened to be a detailer that my car in fact was painted so apparently the prior owner kind of lied by saying the car had never been painted. I don’t know if the deterioration was a consequence of the car being painted with cheap materials, me not using the right products or just the conditions. The whole story comes straight from Puerto Rico so you know, summer the whole year. I still have that car. Just waiting to finish university so I can pay for the thing. Note: I am no professional, I am just a normal person who wanted to take care of her car. I was so sad when the clear started turning white. I was really putting a lot of time and effort on the car and was doing it manually and under the sun.

@wilsonautodetailing
@wilsonautodetailing 7 лет назад
thank you Kim! I appreciate that! Sealants are going to last through snow, rain, heat, etc.. though of course A LOT of precipitation is going to cause the sealant to break down faster than if there was no precipitation, but thats obvious, waxes will last through the elements to a certain point, but really the main difference is just that in any case, sealants are going to last longer than waxes. But it would be cool to get two cars that have the same sealant, put one where there is no precipitation, and one where there is a lot, and see how long each lasts, just to compare, but as a rule, most sealants last somewhere between 6 months and 1 year

Love the Corolla! Mine's Barcelona Red. It has gold flecks but I'm having a hard time bringing out the flecks. What should I do? Have clayed and buffed the car, wondering if I should go more in depth.

I would call megs ultimate a sealant as I do with Megs NXT tech wax 2.0. Def sealants. Great video mate. Water behaviour test next 😉

Ya I think you will not be disappointed with the griots sealant! But really any sealant these days is going to do all 3 of those things really well!

You are full of it on the wax. I haven't waxed my Jeep in 2 years. Its still doing pretty damn good.

Do you use a sealant or a different protectant other than a wax?

I kind of find that sealant doesn't bead water up as long, but great video!!!

Luke, hope this isn't a stupid question but.... Since sealants last 9-12 months, can I apply a wax, then apply a sealant and then NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WAXING for that 9-12 months the sealant will last?

Hi Luke - I just finished my car with a mixture of Duragloss 105 and their bonding agent 601. The result has blown my mind! I've used many waxes and sealants over the years but have seen nothing that compares to this! Have you ever reviewed this product combination?

Thanks for the info. Quick question of I'm applying sealant and then wax, do I need to wait for the sealant to ''cure' before applying the wax. New sub !

The carnauba looked better at first, but in the time it took you to do the sealant, it developed a slight haze. The synthetic wax and sealant are better in the end.

Right!!😂 The same thoughts with too much foods.... Hell who saw coffee plant berries or cacao pods and thought... Hell yeah this would be nice if the meat is removed, seed fermented then dried, toast them almost burnt, grind them and then add them to boiling water...🥴🫠 Too much things had ro happen if it was just an accidental discovery 😂😂.
