Anyone can go out and buy a nice scan tool, but it takes a mechanic with real talent and experience to interpret that data and use it effectively---you have that. Great diagnostic
My first car was an early '95 Ford Fiesta. It was stalling and not starting very well so I took it to a local garage for diagnostics and they told me I needed a new TPS. I had to go buy the part from a dealer myself, but they fitted it and the car ran fine afterwards. It was very interesting seeing this from your side and how you diagnosed it. Your videos are great, thanks for taking the time to make them.
Some states require a license to do mechanic stuff commercially. The only sane thing California has done in the last 40 years was telling parts stores that they couldn't hook scanners up to cars. Not sure if they've reversed that at any point.
Awesome the store didn't try to sell the part! Honesty on their behalf is worth more! Plus they would've been wrong anyway. Proof you can't just go by codes and chuck parts at it in an attempt to fix the vehicle. Proper testing is always needed.

Oh! I get it! So the TPS was sending a voltage that made the computer think that its position was open more than it actually was, which in turn caused the computer meter the fuel incorrectly, thus causing it to stumble and stall. Or something like that. At least that's how this layman's mind interpreted it.
Nice. Is that a MAF or Speed Density setup on that engine? I don't see a lot of TPS failures any more, but once in a while. I had one a few months ago I fixed mobile. It was a chevy truck, and they were told they need a new transmission and wanted a second opinion. It was a bad TPS that was intermittently spiking high and low. When it would spike the transmission would downshift and upshift over and over for a few seconds. The thing had a TPS code, but also had slip codes in the TCM. I had a used TPS from the junk yard in my box and threw it on, they are still driving it with no issues and no codes returned in the TCM. I was done with it in 20min, charged them $100 and they were looking at about $4500 estimate from a Transmission shop.
I am a DIY , but how can you condemn a transmission WITHOUT a review of all data ? You would think a test drive while watching and or recording live data would be mandatory . Either they are hacks or trying to sell a rebuild . So AFTER the rebuild when the vehicle does the EXACT same thing - do they get sued - or give the customer more horseshit excuses ?
@@billsmith2212 My guess is they drove it, saw the transmission codes, and probably the TPS code, but said to themselves, that's engine stuff and we just do transmission work. A lot of shops are good at swinging transmissions, but not so good at diagnosis. This particular transmission shop has sold a few large jobs that didn't need done. This video of mine, the customer was quoted $2500 for a differential rebuild at the same shop. nice diag Joe those correlation codes can be sneaky sometimes a bad sensor implicates a good sensor Maf sensor on a non chrysler like the autel graphing do you ever use the Autel hooked to a moniter screen HDMI port? take care
Great lesson. I see it pays to look at live data stream and confirm that sensors are reporting what makes sense . Obviously the TPS is critical . I think you have to start with a foundation before you go off on a chase to nowhere.

I'm looking into doing a v8 swap, in your opinion should I go 318 or 360? I plan to swap the 42re and keep the 8.25 as long as it lasts. You are very intelligent and I would appreciate your input
i've heard others talk about "substituted values" when there is a problem with a sensor. so yeah can you really trust your scan tool???? makes sense that they were thinking mass cuz its not jiving but you checked it out before firing the parts cannon.

the code didnt reset for tps because the pcm sees voltage right or wrong fromt the tps the code that set is for correlation voltages between the two at any given rpm fought this same car/engine combo 2 years ago

Does anyone know how to figure out actual intake vacuum using the pids. Baro and map pressure I know there's some wierd thing you do with subtracting them and multiply by 2 but I don't know the whole reason why or any good links to someone explaining the whole thing. Thank you guys
Bro I’m working on a 03 ram 1500 4.7 intermittent stalling, no codes. The IAT is up over 100 degree which I found weird. I have a feeling it’s the TPS sensor tho these are notorious. Only code that comes up every now and then are catalyst efficiency codes. I can’t imagine the map would cause that. I need to test the map and tps tommorow. Thanks for sharing this. I hate when no code intermittent issues occur.
Those trucks are notorious for cam and crank sensors too. Put a scope on the signals when it doesn't start. And make sure you are getting fuel pressure also. See what you lose during the no start to get some direction.
@@JoesAutoElectric Ill check that out. it'll start no problem.. every time. the issue is it'll stall at red lights maybe once or twice a day. sometimes the cataylist warm up codes will trigger but not all the time. im going to scope the TPS and check vacuum on the MAP. this truck is driving me crazy lol runs absolutely perfect 98% of the time
