I don't have the words in my command to express how much I love the playing of Lou Donaldson. To me, he gets far too few mentions when the topic turns to jazz's all-time great altos. If it were left up to me that wouldn't be the case because I sing his praises whenever I get a chance! Here he treats us to one of his more Latin-tinged compositions. No matter what flavors Lou decides to use when he offers up his musical treats, you can best believe he's gonna be swingin'! From his 1963 album, "Good Gracious", this is entitled "Caracas".
Lineup:
Lou Donaldson - alto saxophone
Grant Green - guitar
John Patton - organ
Ben Dixon - drums

I am from Caracas and I do miss how fashionable, lively and lovely it was. One of the best Cities of the world indeed! Thank you Lou Donaldson for such a gorgeous song dedicated to my City! Such a great Sax player!

Nice groove and excellent playing. Everybody's playing is so laid back and cool.

Thanks a lot for the post. Also, it's hard to beat a bit of Grant Green if you want it to swing, IMHO.

I've been listening to the intro over and over again, and I swear it sounds like Grant Green is playing an unamplified acoustic archtop guitar. The tone, feel and balance of the guitar sound is what gives it away. His clave rhythm then is blended with the swinging-8th feel of Ben Dixon's cymbals as the others begin to play. At some point (perhaps early during the head, but I can't really detect where), Grant switches to the electric guitar for his solo and the rest of the tune. "Caracas" - Lou Donaldson, from his Blue Note album 'Good Gracious' recorded January 24, 1963, Van Gelder Studio. Lou Donaldson - alto saxophone . Grant Green - guitar . Big John Patton - organ . Ben Dixon - drums.

Grant played a hollow-bodied Gibson electric. He used to turn both tone controls down to zero, giving a cool midrange sound. No acoustic.

All Music website credit this song in 1993, I'm posting a correction because they sound like 1963 too.

What type of Organ or Key board does he use. Man I just love it.

It's 1963, so no doubt John Patton is playing a Hammond Organ, probably a B-3.

It is the organ at Rudy van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. It was the Hammond C3, the same as the B3, but with an extra wood panel on the cabinet.
