Matt here at rusty nail woodworks just got my xxl at 45 yrs old I felt like i was back i school again trying to learn computers. I cant wait to finish the series. You explained way better than matterhackers . If you havent yet you should download the phone app makers playground. Its where a bunch of us wood jocks hang out THANKS AGAIN SO MUCH

Thank you for being the first person I've found to explain things in the simplest terms possible for new Shapeoko/Carbide users! Carbide should hire you to do their tutorial videos because theirs are way too advanced and superficial for the novice user. If you have any updated videos for updates to Carbide Create, Carbide Motion, and the Shapeoko XXL parts, I'll be devouring those!

Thanks you helped explain a lot. I took your advice and downloaded carbide create even though I don't own a machine ...yet. I did find a couple things in build 451; you can now center 1 vector and when selecting the tools to use there is only one option an 1/8 inch end mill the rest offered have padlocks on them. That is if I was doing it right.

So I am no beginner to the CAD world nor CNC setup and tool path layout but I wanted to see specifically how to do it with Carbide as I just ordered my XL. I must applaud you on this mini series. I could see a beginner following right along with this and having no issues at all. You did not skip over anything and explained it all thoroughly. And I learned very quickly what I needed to know for importing and setting home on the machine (waiting on the touch probe to come back in stock...)

sucks right off... but have to give it a chance, it could be good. Bear with me, if you could comment and address all the points I bring up... I cannot purchase this equipment without knowing it is more than a 3 year toddler level, as it appears so far. If I design a piece, I want to design that first then be concerned with the substrate/stock size and adjust accordingly by laying my part(s) and sizing the part(s) to fit. ...as surely many jobs are more than one part at a time. ...and the stock may not be always the same size and parts count the same. Can you clarify: so the head lifts 10mm(1cm) above the original top of the stock being cut into? Why not create a pentagon/circle and the associated isosceles triangles and create a group to demonstrate the group feature!? ...and if you did do that, could you draw up only one of the points and have the software create the rest of the points evenly spaced out around that circle/pentagon? ...which would amount to the same process one would have to go thru to create a spur gear.

I have a shape within a shape that I am trying to have the pocket feature ignore, but it want's to cut out the entire shape going over the other shape (node). Is there a way to have the pocket feature ignore another shape inside of the one you are trying to pocket? Any help will be appreciated.

We are trying to make our first object, a cat, we are using the 201 .125 bit. Our first pass of the bit is cutting over .125 an splintering bad. We don’t think it. Should cut that deep all at once. Where can I find a setting to ensure it makes several passes, instead of one deep pass? I hop this question makes sense, not sure how to phrase it.

change the depth of cut to .06 in the tool path bit settings. also, use a downcut bit.

I enjoy your explanation in using Carbide Create. I have downloaded the program, but the many of the elements shown on this video are available using the free download. Are you using Carbide Create Pro, is that why I'm not able to find many of the elements you use. One example is mine doesn't have import from Design Elements. Once I select the star I have saved, I don't have the option to resize by select the 12 x 12 size. I'm worse than a novice, I'm looking at the LongMill CNC. Any suggestions?

this video really helped me understand the software. I was hesitant to buy a CNC router because I didn't know what the software issues would be. especially the tool path creation. they look pretty simple. How do you like the shapeoko? I have read comments about the flex and was considering a shark but really don't want to spend twice as much if there is not much of a difference in performance.
