In this video we go over the different features of Carbide Create & Carbide Create Pro. We briefly touch on the Design & Tooling abilities of each. The main difference being Pro you can do 2.5D Design & Carving from 2D files & the New Engrave Feature.
After filming this the BETA for CC6 was released with the biggest announced feature looks to be the addition of Rulers, Undo/Redo, & . carbide3d.com/blog/carbide-cr...
Carbide Create/Pro can import SVG/DXF
They both also have a Image Tracer, that works on JPG, PNG, & BMP files. So you can convert them to a vector. The image tracer is best used on simple objects.
Carbide does not use STL or OBJ Files, so if you want to use those you will need to convert them to a Depth Map First.

Thank You Dan. I have not had a chance to try out vetric yet, but it is on the list of software to try out.

Thanks for the video, I am trying to determine if I need the pro version.

If you are not doing 2.5d carving or want the engrave feature, then regular version will do great. Just a reminder CC Pro will Not import/export 3d files.

I'm trying to decide on software, in the past I used Fusion 360 but now i'm looking for software I can own instead of being at the whim of some giant company's subscription plans. Carbide create has a strange interface, and the pro version seems less feature rich than the equivalent Vectric options. Unfortunately Vectrics trial versions don't let you export your toolpaths so it's hard to compare the quality of output using only the trial version. FreeCad is another one i'm looking at which shows some promise but has lots of rough edges. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, there are pros and cons to all software. CC may not be feature rich as Vectric or other paid software, but for me I mainly use illustrator to design, and CC for tool paths. I know illustrator is a monthly, but inkscape is free and very simillar. Still rough around the edges in my opion. However, still better than CC's cad features. Plus CC is better than easel in my opinion. I do use the engrave feature in Cc pro for my edge lit acrylics, so there is that, and I own it forever. For what I make it works. I have not used freecad, but I have used blender, as I used it with 3d modeling for animation and 3d printing. Good luck in your cad/CAM search.

thanks for the video, is there a trim tool with pro ?

There is no trim tool in pro. The closest thing to trim is the Boolean. The only differences between Free & Pro is in the tool pathing and those are 3D & Engrave.

Is carbide create free?

There is a free version, but it will not let you export gcode from it from v7 forward, if you get v6 then you can. V7 creates a c2d file. Which can be used in carbide motion (which only works with shapeoko machines) or go to their website and convert the c2d file to gcode (not sure if you have to have an account or how long that will be available.)

I feel this CC software works too sloooooow and there is no fun working with it. I have Ryzen 5 3600, 28 RAM, RX 580 8 Gb and ASPIRE works right at the moment, I tried this one before but no way to compare. VECTRIC software is amazing. So many videos and help that there is no need to check quality output if thousands of people built amazing things with it. Not even to compare how mysterious was ArtCam now Carveco which doesn´t even have a Trial as I believe is not for piracy but not to let know that basically is the same Autodesk Artcam with some basic adds and a lot of money plus. It´s not bad for hobbyists. Fusion 360 is more a CAD with CAM implemented and Vcarve and Aspire is more CAM with some CAD included but there is no need for more. A lower cost of Vcarve is enough if you are not using it for 3D as you can do this in any free CAD program and import the models straight into Vcarve and process them. And a lot much cheaper but if you don´t care about the cost, go for Aspire Pro, is the best.

I have actually started using PixelCNC & Estlcam. Both have way fewer limitations on their trial versions, both are cheaper, both generate tool pathing relatively fast, are one time purchases, installed locally on the machine, and have a lot more options in terms of tooling compared to CC. Estlcam is just a CAM, PixelCNC is CAD and CAM, but way different than other programs out there. In regards to CC I still think it is a good starting point for those new to CNC, have a machine made by them so they can stay within their ecosystem, and it is way better than other cloud based options. Really, I think it comes down what a person is comfortable with, what are they wanting to make, how much they want to spend, and how big of a learning curve do they want to get into. I have never used Vetric or Carveco software, either because of cost or I just wanted to go against the grain. I don't know they never stood out to me. Also, CC6 was free at the time. I know a lot of people use both of those and good on them. It all comes down to choice, and the more choices there are, the better off the end consumer is, as it pushes the software company to innovate and keep improving.
