too fast, too hot. the vibrations and heat will harden the stainless making it really difficult to drill

Running that drill at that speed into stainless just shows you have NO IDEA what you're doing.

Talk about how not to drill ! How could anyone tackle any job like this without first learning HOW to do the job ? he ruined both bits instantly because of drill speed .... It wasn't carbide vs HSS...It was man vs carbide an HSS !

The reason you came through at all was that the carbide can stand the heat better. You putted way to high rpm on the drill. If the drill dont cut at low rpm it is either to low preassure applied or the drill is not sharp. Higher rpm is not the solution. HSS drills can drill stainless almost as good as a carbide drill, but HSS is easier to ruin so carbide will work better if good cutting-data can not be used.
@dekurvajo
@dekurvajo 7 лет назад
You are right regarding the speed, and the hand drill problem. Stainless steel is quiet difficult though. There are plenty different grades in HSS so its not enough to say HSS is not good enough. Depends. I never used carbide bit yet, i am might give a try one day.
@sniffswe9416
@sniffswe9416 7 лет назад
The drilling ability is not much different with carbide or HSS, it is the tool-life that is the big differens and in most cases a carbide drill can withstand more heat so it can cut faster. I was working in a workshop before that was working mostly with stainless steel and we used HSS-drills for everything except in the CNC-machines. HSS is a bit easier to sharpen so they are more versatile to use in hand-tools. If the drill is feeded with 0,025mm/turn (approx. 25% of recommended feedrate for many HSS-drills) it means that it takes 160 turns to make hole in a 4mm plate. If it takes more, like 500-1000 turns or so, the drill is not drilling but rubbing and thats what kills it fast.

@@sniffswe9416 "The drilling ability is not much different with carbide or HSS" I think you are wrong here. HSS is only meant to be used on plastics, wood and some softer metals, imo for stainless steel you need at least TiN coated HSS bit or HSS bit with at least 5% cobalt... the only way you will make a hole on a THIN sheet of stainless steel with a bare HSS bit is by pushing on it like a mule and on max rpm's

From what a read solid carbide bits are made to use with rigid tools such as a drill press and not made for hand tools since they will break easily.
@Migman2020
@Migman2020 2 года назад
you cant even use carbide bits in most drill presses as they lack the rigidity to use them correctly.. i cant even use them in my milling machine even thought i use carbide end mills.
@DKNguyen3.1415
@DKNguyen3.1415 10 месяцев назад
@@Migman2020 I wonder why that is since the endmill experiences radial forces while the drill experiences only axial forces so you would expect that if carbide endmills could be used then carbide drills could be too.

For drilling stainless steel (304, 316) HSco is good enough. The HSS drill he's using is probably just shitty quality, plus his speed seem a bit high. The trick is applying enough pressure; once you get the cut going you'll zoom through.

ww2 colorizer If you have worked with drill bits, you will learn that running them fast, they will overheat... and get dull. You learn this in one of two ways 1. The easy way: You read, watch videos, others tell you etc. 2. The hard way: You will run your bits too fast, and they will get dull. What purpose do you think the oil being applied serves? Even at lower RPMS, the drill bits will overheat. Spinning the bits at high RPMs and applying oil is similar to drinking diet soda while eating many plates of food at a buffet. It DEFEATS the purpose!

Your drill is spinning too fast. You’d have better results if the drill was spinning at around 400 rpms. You’re getting too much friction with the drill spinning that fast.

Ebay, search for "TCT locksmith drill bits" there are 2 types, masonry TCT bits and locksmiths TCT bits, you want the locksmith bits with sharp tips, not the masonry bits with rounder tips. The Locksmith TCT bits also don't require a center punch to make the initial drill hole, they just eat right intot he metal. Hope this helps.

Doesn't matter if it's in a hand drill or drill press, what matters is drilling slowly and constantly stopping to cool the bit off every 5-10 seconds. These drill bits were designed to be used in hand drills because they are locksmiths drill bits. Locksmiths don't carry around a drill press to drill through peoples doors and safes, in fact you can't use a drill press to do this job, you have to use a hand drill there is no other option for a locksmith. That's why these bits are known as locksmiths drill bits. He is just going too fast I have a demo video of how to drill through tempered spring steel with a hand drill and TCT bits if you want to see how to do it properly.
