He never answered the question but rather just danced around it. In a deflective sort of way. “Light, oxygen, engineering in a specific way. Fortune 500 fortune 50 Nadimus bleep bloop blop bleeep!!¡” Cool robot man guy, any other final statements “Esters, light, oxygen, two parts sterilizable klip under the hood, we live for for fortune fortunately existing engineering thermosets pressure and heat.” Oh wow wow we wow robot oxygen man. I heard there was some sensitivity issues with your klip? Hopefully

👀.....damn like seriously serious? How fast we talking on the crack re-up? Do they offer crack direct to public or are they a wholesaler like the CIA? This is exciting. I remember back when I started out you had to use a scrape process but now with light, oxygen and chemistry we get some high tech crack.

He would have been good at not answering if he had known the answers but still avoiding to give any useful answers. This guy had no idea about the answers and probably no idea about the questions. So he was just good at repeating the mantra until they did run out of time for the interview. He claimed he couldn't mention how the process worked because it was a trade secret. But the inventor behind it had already spilled the beans so there was no reason to not mention that they use a base that allows oxygen through - except the reason he just didn't have the actual knowledge to be able to give this answer.

These printers don't use light from surroundings. They use a beam of light projected from underneath the printer tray. So its not visible because the resins in the tray block the view (unless you're using translucent resin). The oxygen part, they don't explain because of being secretive in their research but basically they control how much oxygen is allowed to be around the printing tray. Think of how oxygen and fuel are used together in car engines.

The takeaway, which they seem to be beating around, but not explicitly saying is that its a DLP SLA system that uses an oxygen barrier to eliminate the "peel" process usually native to SLA - so while it is technically still curing the part in layers, the layers are esentially contiguous and not perceptable . Also with the "peel" gone you are eliminating 75% of the error causes in SLA printing.

As far as I can tell, the purpose of the Oxygen is simply to prevent curing of the resin actually on the transparent plate at the bottom, thus avoiding the need for the 'peel' process and (kind of) making it a continuous process. The transparent plate at the bottom is presumably made of oxygen permeable glass/plastic similar to that used for contact lenses.
@kishorehari

+Sardi Pax Yep. First versions were coated with Teflon AF as mentioned in the science paper. science.sciencemag.org/content/347/6228/1349.full. Oxygen inhibition of UV curing isn't new technology per se.

The control of oxygen is done by using a micromirror chip which creates the light pattern required to print the shape you want. They were originally used in projectors for computers, It's made up of a lot of tiny mirrors each around 8 microns squared. The UV light hits the micromirror and creates a pattern, silicone is used between the resin and the light as it allows oxygen into the resin as it is highly permeable to gas. All the while the UV light prints it layer by layer. That's how they manage OXYGEN.

Bind the oxygen into your base resin, add a catalyst that will react with the oxygen under UV excitation, and have the UV projection wavelength and modulation matched so that it excites the catalyst, make it extract the oxygen from the resin, letting it harden. It's pretty genius, where as traditional printers avoid oxygen at all costs, this process distributes the oxygen evenly through the base resin and uses the light to get rid of it only where you need the resin to set. This will only get better as more sensitive resins and catalysts get developed, that need less light exposure to set, letting you pull the shape out faster.

@perwestermark8920
@perwestermark8920 6 лет назад
ThatGuyYouMetToday VLOGS Yes it is still layering since the projector projects frames based on cross sections computed at specific points in time and thereby computed for specific z of the model. I would have liked some I formation about post-production steps when the design requires additional scaffolding structures to merge disjoint structures of the design during the print. The printer can't print with two materials at the same time so additional scaffolding needs to be removed mechanically. Which becomes harder as the resin itself gets better and better mechanical properties.

The weight versus geometry issues I imagine that are also inherent with these printers can be relatively easily overcome by the application of equal density liquid buoyancy support.

So this guy has basically just taken a sheet of marketing blurb and creativelyt rephrased the same info about 50 times. Well, got to admire his patience I suppose. I have my suspicions about the oxygen though. My guess is that there is a component in the resin that reacts differently when it's heated, so the projector combines UV light that sets the shape, and IR light that regulates the release of oxygen within the compound. I might be wrong on the specifics there, as I'm not an engineer or a chemist, but oxygen release would need to be controlled in a way that was just as fast and versatile as the hardening stimulus, so heat sounds most likely to me, as it can be projected in complex shapes just like UV. That, or fast-moving lasers or ultrasound, but that seems less likely as I imagine it requires a lot more precise engineering for a slower result. Interesting stuff, anyway.
@big09D

+tSp289 Yep. No chemists here. My guess is that its the speed of ascension dictates the oxygen availability and quenches the reaction.

Dimitri Floros So the final properties are set at the surface? That makes sense. And yes, I said I'm not a chemist. No need to make fun.
@marksmod
@marksmod 8 лет назад
+tSp289 I was thinking something similar. If you have a compound in the resin that releases Oxygen at a different wavelength than the shape creating mechanism we can use 2 different wavelengths of light to selectively release oxygen around the shape being made. The problem with using heat is that the reaction is exothermic and heat diffuses and would be less precise than UV.
@withwingsaseagleeyes
@withwingsaseagleeyes 8 лет назад
+tSp289 The Oxygen is put in via the place where the light is applied. If you can understand that then you and the others in this thread might just get it then. The Oxygen is not in the Chemicals and would not work in my imagining mind of mine. Do some more deeper research and then you might find that answer in which I did find myself.
@tSp289
@tSp289 8 лет назад
withwingsaseagleeyes How though? That would mean you either had to deliver it by tubes or some kind of membrane that was still clear enough for the light not to be blocked. OIf the solidification happens on the glass, then the oxygen either needs to be released from within the solution, or it needs to be anaerobic in there and simply withheld until the structure reaches the surface. So for the record, I do think Dimitri's idea was more likely to be right, as the simplest solution is often the best one. It does beg the question how this method of light-setting is any different from the others though, since they all seem to get drawn out of a resin as well.
@XtheBEEP
@XtheBEEP 7 лет назад
I have an idea how it works. They are using a specail rasin, which i think is hardening under uv-light but is reseasing oxigen under a different section of the light spectre. They also used a kind of a 2 component rasin as you see, so they must seperate it otherwhise there would be a chemical reaktion. So i think the fast printing time is caused by this chemical reaktion, which is supported by the Uv-light to harden the rasin and is stoped by the "other light" beacause its releasing oxigen. sorry for my englisch im german...

Its just an LCD over a UV panel. They use UV reacting resins that's all. The heavy engineering part it's in the materials not the hardware. How do they control the oxygen? The UV light causes a photopolymerization of the resin which builds a chain of polymers to create a physical object and then the oxygen is introduced to the system through a semipermeable oxygen layer which inhibits or stops the resin to cure or harden near that layer. Basically the light hardens and the oxygen is used to make sure the object doesnt stick to the bottom of the window in the resin pan. And then stuck in a oven afterwards to harden.

With the top of the range production printers, inconel printing and such, the chamber is sealed and a non reactive gas such as argon is put in the chamber. By keeping the chamber open you allow oxegen in. Heat and oxegen create gas which creates bubbles of air that prevent bonding. What they do here is control the heat of the laser to control the amount of gas the oxegen gives off, bonding the resin only where they want it to.

@ambiguity22 8 лет назад
+Squat251 Gaming ...? srsly? It was very clear that you can keep a few around for quick swaps containing/contaminated with different resins depending on what you want to do. It makes perfect sense to be able to switch out a clear soft resin with a automotive quality resin tray on the fly. The machine isn't "using up" the cartridge each print. You could theoretically use only one cartridge, you would just have to clean it out perfectly between parts, instead of swapping it out for a quick run of another part.
@wobblysauce
@wobblysauce 8 лет назад
+ambiguity22 But just swapping the tray is faster, then you can clean it off when another is doing its thing. As for the resin, you are only putting in as much as the item needs to use for printing, depending on what ones you use they have different use times. So you would not just fill to the Max line and print a few things.. and call it a day.
@charliebeadle2979
@charliebeadle2979 8 лет назад
+Squat251 Gaming No, you don't, did you not watch the video? You can just have one tray, which you clean when you need to change the resin, or have more that make swapping resins easier. Besides, it comes with two anyway, and considering the whole thing is a min. three year subscription @ $40,000 per year, excluding installation, I'm sure the big companies that will use this can afford the extra $5k for a cassette. It's not a product for "end users".

Watch it slow down when the print something that has a higher fill volumer. While this oxygen-inhibition is nice, it doesn't address the need for fresh resin to flow back in to replenish the locally-depleted material at the site of the curing. Notice how all Carbon's speed demos are using prints that are mostly empty space (just thin cured meshes). Sure this is an improvement, but it's over-hyped and there are other fast resin technologies in the works that are not getting the same coverage.

Video summary : "It's complex"

If I understood it correctly, the simplified idea is that the cross-section is projected with UV light. The UV light makes the liquid solid. So it's with layers, but the layer is built at once and not outlined, like in a standard printer. But yeah it is much more complicated than this simplification suggests.
