So many choices for carbon MTB wheels! We put the Zipp 3zero Moto, E.13 LG1R EN & Crank Brothers Synthesis E11 head to head to compare what they feel like on the trail and the subtle differences between some of the best carbon mountain bike wheelsets out there. Some brands like e*thirteen components have stuck to the traditional "box style" design for their LG1R EN wheelset to create an extremely stiff and responsive wheel. Other companies such as Zipp, have gone the complete opposite direction by creating the Zipp 30 Moto carbon rim designed to "flex" or be "compliant" and actually adsorb some of the harsh impacts often felt while riding chunky terrain. Looking for something right in the middle? Crank Brothers has you covered with their Synthesis E11 Carbon wheelset which features uniquely tuned front and rear wheels designed to offer both stiffness and compliance in just the right way. Sure, this all sounds great but how do they actually perform out on the trail? We decided to find out for our-self and hit the hills to do some back to back runs with all three carbon wheelsets. If you are considering upgrading to a set of carbon mountain bike wheels, this is the video for you!

Worldwide Cyclery wide aluminum rims i30 to i40 width depending bike tire combo. On my more miles trail bike I have i30 rear with 2.4 tires and i35 with 2.5 tires front. On my SS rigid rig I have i35 with 2.6 and i40 with 2.8 tires front. All wheels are 3x db spokes with Hadley or Hope hubs. Having a supple feel is my priority and since I ride hardtails it really helps having aluminum. Plus it’s cheaper and easier to buy and swap to new rims as I need.

I have a 2018 Spectral 6.0 AL and factory wheels were M-1900, I wanted to drop some weight and got a great deal on a set of 2019 Mavic XA carbon wheels. 1st thing I noticed was how SMOOTH they were over the M-1900, if you look closely you'll see extreme offset so not sure if that is for strength or compliance or both but so far so good with them and love that 40 tooth hub engagement, saved 250 grams too, 1900 vs 1650

I'm loving my zelvy wheels, they feel great, not flexi or harsh considering I'm 110kgs (fully kitted), was 130kg at my heaviest. Riding rocky East Kootenay's terrain and also with rimpact front and rear. No cracked rims yet and I'm definitely not light on the bike. 28psi f , 30psi r.

Okay I’m happy, I do weigh 188 lbs and run lg1r wheels and I was gonna say they don’t feel that stiff, just nice enough to support me without flexing too much. I also race which makes me wanna ride a lot harder so I don’t want any flex which will make the wheel be unpredictable in corners or on rock gardens etc

I have a set of Zipps on my Ripmo. They are perfect for the Rocky and roots trails I ride (Canadian Shield). They basically have the best traits of a carbon and aluminum wheel. I have a full season on them now and they are still true and zero loose spokes. I know some people think they might be prone to that because of the ankle compliance, but we haven’t seen it. I chose these over the new We Are Ones and don’t regret it at all.

I'm running a 650b set of Nox rims on Project 321 hubs on my gravel bike... I was surprised to dig the carbon as much as I do. At 190 lbs I like a stiff rim. However I totally prefer aluminum rims on my trail bike. Regardless of lifetime warranty or not, if I damage a carbon rim a lifetime warranty is not helpful when I can't just bend a rim back and bike out.

I WOULD HAVE LOVED a wildcard thrown in to run it with a set of good AL wheels!! You guys do a lot of these type of videos. You should up your game on the POV footage. Hero 7, chin mounted. I get it..."We hate full face helmets." Well...your footage will be so drastically improved, that it's worth it, and it's not like you're on 25 mile trail rides on these tests. It's especially enticing when you can get the best air flow helmets out there..TLD, Lazer, Fox, etc. Check out Phil Kmetz latest Whistler videos for an example how GREATLY IMPROVED your footage would be with that simple change. Thanks for the test. I run the DIRT components carbon wheelset in the 30.1mm inner diameter. I love them. I had ridden a few different brands, and as you explain well here...the complaince as drastically different. Enve were hard as rocks...did not care for them at all. I tried the NOX, and they were a little better...still pretty firm. Ibis was really nice, but they were out of stock when I ordered my Ripmo, so I went with the DIRT wheels, and they feel very similar to the Ibis. That having been said....I think a really good set of AL wheels is fine for most casual riders who aren't going to be racing and wanting every last .1 of a second out of their riding. With the prices on carbon wheels, and warranty improving, it's getting closer to AL cost...but still a ways to go.

Very good point about being heavier. Question : Like you guys, Im lighter. I'm 5'8 145lbs geared and ride my suspension firm already (25-28% sag and roughly 10 to 20psi over recommended ). Would any of these wheels be too stiff for an already stiff setup bike? (Looking for maximum playfulness without being too deflective). That said, my rebound is also such that I can just barely get the back end to round down when jumping really high. Need to find a demo somewhere...

Valid point, we did make sure to note this was not a totally scientific and perfect test. That would be extremely hard and not cost effective to pull off something like that but what we were going for was more trying to get the qualitative aspects of this and that came down to feel during back-to-back comparisons on the same Trail and bike and tires.

Ok someone help me out here. I switched from a 27.5 aluminum wheel to an eThirteen LG1R 29in wheel. The biggest notice is that I'm not riding a 27.5 fatty anymore. Those differences are easily felt. As for the fact I'm now on carbon wheels, I have no idea what they're doing for me and the same goes for my carbon frame. I mean other than being a tad lighter, I feel like it's just a status thing...."Yea bruh my shit is carbon" Fortunately my 1,200 wheels were part of a free promotion when I bought my bike. If I spent that much money on those wheels I'd be pissed,because other than it changing my bike to a 29er, I don't know what the hype is. Ohh and yeah the 29r front just skims the crown of my fork and actually created a divot from the tread pattern of my DHF!
@treycox706
@treycox706 4 года назад
When I went from an aluminum wheel to the E Thirteen carbon wheels I stayed 27.5 so the only variable was the carbon. I even had the same tires. The carbon seemed to help me stay on my line through rocks and it was more point and shoot where I felt the aluminum would bend more and was Almost trying to steer me where it wanted to go rather than where I wanted to go. I personally felt the difference. Also it wasn’t extremely massive it was notable for sure. There’s my two sense.
@jmanswat2457
@jmanswat2457 4 года назад
There are definitely some performance differences and tradeoffs. I've always felt that carbon is for racing and not trail riding. It's light and stiff and gives you that edge but it's not durable or cheap. Yeah you get a lifeline warranty but you basically pay for it, and all the hassel with shipping and downtime, AND I think companies make better margin on it when its all said and done. Everyone I know that runs carbon is constantly worried about it- nics and dinges. Really puts a damper on the fun factor in rides. Plus they keep figuring out how to make aluminum lighter and stiffer all the time.

@@jmanswat2457 That's interesting because I haven't owned a set of carbon wheels yet, but when my buddy accidentally backed over this carbon wheel with his car and the wheel was totally fine...that was the indicator for me. I hate truing wheels!

@TheWavrdr 4 года назад
Worldwide Cyclery, if “compliance” is the “targeted” word associated with a review of strength and performance, then I personally feel the Race SL is a more comparable product. The AG’s are sick, but are specifically targeted for downhill riding....ie: stiff and strong as a mofo. Just my opinion obviously; keep the video production up, love your content 🤙
