I was pleasantly surprised to find Zipp at outerbike 2019. They were offering demo wheels. You bring your bike in, and they swap the rotors and cassette for you, so you can see what their wheels feel like compared to your bike. I've had my eye on these wheels for a while, and when I first saw them I thought "these look perfect for a hardtail." I was glad I got to review them. I FINALLY found what was causing the creak in my WTB silverado seat! The junction of the seat rails and the saddle are creaking. I shot some chain lube in there, and it quieted it down for a week... then it came back. At least I know what it is now, it's been driving me CRAZY!

How does the middle child stack up to the other bikes I reviewed this weekend? I watched all these videos back to back, and even though I was tired from riding 2 days in a row, I noticed how much faster I'm riding this bike. I'm charging harder on it than any of the other demos. I'm so much more confident on it than any other bike at the show, and my riding lines and speed show it. Of all the hardtails I've ridden, the RSD Middle Child Ti is my favorite bike for my riding style. I feel like I should clarify: when I say "it's not worth selling out for a company I don't like" I wasn't implying that I don't like RSD. I love the company, but if I didn't like their bikes, I wouldn't endorse them. The company, the owner, the ride characteristics, the cost... RSD is the complete package. I'm SUPER happy with my RSD bikes, and Alex who runs the company is a standup dude. Here's how I'd rate my MC Ti: Climbing: 10/10 Descending: 10/10 (11 if that's possible) Cornering: 10/10 Playfulness: 10/10 Suppleness: 9/10 Versatility: 10/10 Build quality: 10/10 It's such a good bike.

Just put these wheels on my Yeti ARC and was blown away at how much of a difference they made. I’d say one of the most notable upgrades that I have ever made to a mountain bike. So much more comfortable and compliant than my previous wheelset. I bought them somewhat on a whim but your review is what really sold me on them and I’m glad I decided to pull the trigger. Keep the solid content coming!

I had a set of these and got 14 seconds faster on a UK EWS track on the first run after swapping out from Santa Cruz Reserve rims. Unfortunately the rear rim only lasted 2 months before cracking, however, it was in the shop under warranty when my bike was stolen, so a blessing in disguise. I now run the Zipp on the front which it is amazing for and I have just bought a Reserve alloy HD rim to put on my Chris King hub on the rear. Not ridden this setup yet, but full warranty on both rims for life. These rims are perfect for technical enduro tracks. You will want something a bit stiffer if you ride super smooth BMX style tracks a lot with loads of berms and jumps but very few rocks or tree roots.

I don’t have a lot of experience on carbon rims but they few hardtails and gravel bikes I tried with pricy carbon rims did have a hard plastic feel. I keep a lot of extra wheels and swap wheels on my bikes all the time. I prefer aluminum for not just the “give” of aluminum but I don’t care if I bang em up because they are not an expensive replacement part. Heck, some of my rims cost less than the tires I buy, lol.

Two years later, what are your thoughts on the Zipps? If could only afford one Zipp wheel, would you recommend it on the front or back? If I only had a full rigid bike? Would you want to do anything with that wheel, such as use thicker spokes to stiffen it side to side while still having the ankle compliance, lighter to make it a bit flexier, use a wider tire to maximize the cush, up the pressure, etc etc?

I talked to commencal and they weren't interested in sending me one for review or bringing one to the Sedona mtb fest. I have a friend who had one. Once this COVID-19 thing is over, I'll make sure to take his bike out for a couple rides to film a review on it. I don't expect it to be as compliant as this bike, but the geo looks pretty good on paper.

How did the RSD Middle Child ride with 29 inch wheels? Looked good. How did it feel? Change in head tube angle? Bottom bracket height?
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
It rode FAST! The BB is slightly higher, but nothing significant. HTA won't change, as the fork is identical to before. Everything just sits 3/4" higher. This bike is a rocket with 29" wheels. I feel like it won't quite have the same slow-speed technical maneuvers as the 27.5, but it carries its speed better in rolling terrain. Bunny-hops and big ledges will be trickier with the 29.

The only thing you have to watch out for with those is the potential of friction between the spoke nipples and the rim tape. If the rim tape is adhered to the nipple it eventually and in short time tear a hole and leak.

The steel MC is a killer hardtail, congrats on that. This ti one is not inexpensive, but man, it's the real deal. 2lbs lighter than a steel MC with a more of a supple ride. Is that worth the cost? Depends on the rider. And if you compare the RSD ti frame prices to any other ti frame, it's a LOT cheaper.

So would you recommend these as good wheels to add performance to a cheaper (3500.00) Devinci Troy Aluminum bike... I'm looking to make it pedal easier, pick up speed faster, etc... ??
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 4 года назад
To me, the main advantage of these wheels is traction and a more forgiving ride. If you're struggling with traction, these could be a great choice for you. My comments about them making an aluminum bike feel better were aimed toward an aluminum hardtail. On a full suspension bike like your Troy, frame material doesn't matter so much. An aluminum full suspension bike isn't going to ride harsh, because it has a rear shock. If you're looking to pedal easier, pick up speed faster, etc., I'd recommend going with a super light tire and a light rim package. However, don't go too light on either, or they won't be durable and won't have the traction you need. I typically go with a meatier front tire than a rear tire. For my riding, these Zipp wheels are my favorite I've ever ridden. I think they'd be a fantastic addition, but there are much lighter (and cheaper) wheels out there that would give you the ride feel you want.
