It's not every day that a company like Zipp introduces a new product, especially one specifically for enduro and trail mountain bikes. Introducing the Zipp 3Zero Moto, a single-walled carbon mtb rim designed to pivot back and forth as an extension of your suspension. Rather than remain stiff and rigid, the 3Zero Moto draws inspiration from motocross wheels and is able to actually flex when you ride over sharp rocks and bumps. In the past, riders have complained about carbon rims being too stiff which would eventually lead to them breaking. The new moto technology from Zipp hopes to change this perception and brings to market a new type of carbon mountain bike wheel. My thoughts exactly.... They "the bike industry" has been pushing stiffer wheels for a decade.... Now there going to tell you that 1500.00 wheelset is too stiff you need to buy this new 2200.00 set....

Stiff wheels isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Compliance is always good to have. Though to be fair it doesn’t really seem to matter in certain disciplines. My street mtb friends and bmx friends were always just going on about stiffer frames. I like a lil flex. Takes the edge off. For traction though having compliance makes lots of sense. But if it’s stiff as balls in the direction of power transfer that’s also better because it’s more efficient. If you get that right balance then a stiff as balls frame and fork is probably fine. If your frame And fork and wheels are stiff and don’t have enough compliance grip and comfort may be affected. This seems to be correctable with suspension tuning just a lil bit though. My buddy got carbon wheels for his enduro build and complained about the rear end not being as grippy. Lowered his shock pressure a lil and seems to have fixed it for him. Had to play with the tuning options though.

We are one composites rim review. They seem sooooo good. Like a carbon rim option for those who ding rims. The dh specific option may also be a great option. Plus the enduro rim is like 16 ounces if I’m not mistaken.....that’s within my accepted weight range for a bmx rim for street........hot damn that could be used in a weight weenie build. Find something with 14mm disc spacing and a female axle and go full weight weenie with tree bike co aluminum bolts. Enduro frame with that axle spacing would be impossible to find.

This is very interesting for sure. I’ve always felt the wheels and tires should be a consideration or tool of the suspension system. The price doesn’t seem too bad considering. The weight seems competitive to the aluminum Easton Havens I’m running.

Per rim cost is way above what I would pay, and they weigh as much as alloy, so these aren't something I will buy soon. I'm totally intrigued by the ankle compliance concept, and while I'm sure folks will mock the TPMS, I am stoked that that tech is being made available.

I kind of like them and im not a big fan of carbon rims just because im a big boy but the science behind it makes sense I would just be worried about being a big dude crushing one.

Apparently the we are one composites rims hold up stupid well. Knowing zipp these should be solid AF. Hence why these and the we are ones are the only two carbon rims I’ll consider. Both also made in North America

After two years of watching things on these wheels it seems as though they changed the rear hub design to more engagement. I just bought a set of these and believe it’s the old hubs and I don’t care. The wheels are 100 grams heavier than my 26” wheels they are replacing. I got the set for $995 . That’s a little less than the original cost of my aluminum set of Easton Havens in 2013 . The 26” Havens have a 21mm inside dia . I’m converting my 2013 Kona AbraCadabra to 650b or what y’all now call 27.5” . It’s really 27” so 650b still fits best I recon, for me . I went with these wheels , I new rear shock with 5mm longer stroke . This gives me about 20mm more actual travel. A 10mm shorter travel (150) front 27.5 Lyrik. So I’ll have a 150mm front ,120mm most of the time, to 180 rear . I went to a 2deg offset angle headset . Changed it from 67-65 degrees approximately. My bottom bracket with all this probably went up .5 mm 347mm or 13 5/8” . I shortened my cranks from 175mm to 165mm . I did have pedal strikes when I shouldn’t have .

So if the rim is pivoting as described (ankle compliance), do you need to use a tyre with a more even tread rather than one with larger shoulders? Those shoulder knobs won't bite or rail like you would usually expect? I suspect this has already been asked and I'm sure Zipp themselves have looked at this, but it raised that question in my mind. Great video as usual guys, love your content.

Sure if I would get them for free. Then I would sell them, buy 500€ aluminium wheels and use rest 1500€ to upgrade rest of my bike. Sweet looking set though!

used to have a pair of steel rims with the same profile, didn´t know why i had some much grip in my rigid mtb back then, now im running aluminium rims and the difference is kinda noticiable. sadly only steel and carbon can be made in moto styles since aluminium bends quiet easy

That's cool. I'm thinking about getting back into mtb but my bike is a bit on the heavy side so I've been thinking on making it a bit lighter. Too bad these things cost more than a bike. Lol. What are some cheap lighter wheels? I also want to upgrade to disc brakes since I have the old rim type brakes. My bike is an old Gary Fisher tassajara. Love the bike.

Upgrading to disc brakes isn’t too easy, sadly. In most cases it requires a new frame to gain the rear bosses to mount the caliper, and at least a new disc brake compatible fork. I think to get back into the MTB world you’d do well to buy a lightly used second hand bike with some modern brakes and suspension.

I don't get all the 'they're too expensive' type comments! Expensive bikes and components? That ship sailed a while ago! Perhaps the price only makes these viable for pros, or 'dentist's bikes', but they look super-trick, and sound genuinely innovative. DEFINITE contenders for my dream machine custom build (in my head...)

Is the hub under the same lifetime warranty and the wheels ? Who makes the hub and how is it constructed . 52 points of contact doesn’t really mean much if the construction isn’t quality. I’m sure it is decent if it’s Zipp but it would be cool if you did a video on how it is made . Compare it to other quality companies hubs . Thanks for all you guys do!

The hubs sold with the wheelset are the Zipp ZM1 hubs which also carry the limited lifetime warranty.

You pay for the r&d and tech. Not paying for the actual cost of the product. Then the projected sales comes into factor . Down the road if sales are great some products come down in price .

Dave Lachowich hmmm let’s see. You can get a bottom of the barrel (or second hand) MX bike for the same money that you can spend on some top notch, high-tech, fancy af carbon wheels. It’s the same type of argument as when little old ladies tell me they can buy a used car for the price of my bikes, the two things can’t even serve the same purpose 🙄

Great concept but wonder how long the hubs and spokes nipples will last with all the bending and rubbing (mud included) going on. Are hubs covered under warranty for this type of "wear and tear" or rim only? 😂😂

For years hardtail and roadies used wheels , tires and frame materials as their suspension and to dial in ride characteristics. It’s nothing new except into the carbon wheel world and new riders.

Troy I have a shock pump and a 170mm fork for most of your answer ( we are talking about a Enduro wheelset). It's just looks like they reversed the load onto the hubs and spokes in this design ( with so much rim flex). You are going to pay for comfort with a shorter service life(story of today's world). 😊

The rims actually have a noticeable feel to them. Is it better? Faster? Stronger? Eehhh... Need more time to figure that out. But it is noticeable no doubt, the ankle compliance feel that is. I ran back to back trails with alloy wheels and these. Rocky corners is where you can feel it. With anything though, it is hard to get scientific and not let placebo effect your brain.

These are not unique, and definitely not the first single wall carbon rims. Check the Crank Bros wheels and the history of the engineer who they employed to develop them
