The Carboniferous Period (358- 299 Million years ago) was the time of large invertebrates, which were able to grow to those sizes thanks to the high level of oxygen the atmosphere had at the time. Tetrapods diversified in this period. the first Diapsids and Synapsids separated and will evolve in more different animals later in the following Permian period

Carboniferous is a really interesting period in Earth's history because it was the transition when the terrestrial ecosystems were noticeably starting to develop into what they are now but with such a weird cast of flora and fauna that it almost looks alien. I should also mention that Rhizodus must have been a terrifying animal. Just image a fearsome fish bigger than the great white shark swimming in the rivers. Now that I think about it there is potential if somebody wanted to make a horror movie involving a time travel to the Carboniferous.

@@pocketmarcy6990 I know. Shoot a T-Rex in one hind leg and he is down. But not only carnivores are good antagonists. In modern world, elephants, rhinos and hippos are much more dangerous, than lions or leopards. In past, it would the same, i believe. So a rampaging Triceratops, Stegosaurus or Apatosaurus will be nice. Then we have good permian and triassic creatures. Mastodonsaurus, Prionosuchus, Gorgonopsids and the big mochops things. Or the big insects in carboniferous. ^^

The Carboniferous period is arguably the most under appreciated period of earths prehistory. Many of these creatures were giant insects that are both terrifying and interesting as well some reptiles and amphibians. The Carboniferous era is really one of the best and popular era of all, because she very ancient, strange, weird in all aspect, plus a very interesting one and even important and significant in our earth and evolution history since it's was in this era that the terrestrial lands was completely completed and established for the future land animals and that the transaction from sea/water to land has start with importance. Very precious in term of geological aspects, it's, for exemple, from this period that the chacoal we use at little still today begin to transform from the giant trees we can see very faithfully represented in media (like the "Walking with Monster" serie, a good and most know reference). Theses trees was in fact giant prehistoric extinct ferns close to the ferns we know today, not real habitual trees. The carboniferous period was really a era of transition, a sort of crossroads between the precedent Paleozoic eras with almost only invertebrates creatures who were the dominant order and the following Permian and Mesozoic eras were it's the developped and various vertebrates (amphibians, reptiles with birds, mammals) who were and to us even today the dominant order. In term of size dominances, because the invertebrates still the dominant order in term of species number. Still, this was really a time were giant ancient insect and arachnean creatures cohabited with evolved vertebrates who was newly on scene, young and great concurrents. It's like theses fantastic world were Mesozoic creatures and Cenoizoic evolved mammals cohabits together, it's very far-fetched and seemingly impossible, but it really did exist in this particular case. And, plus, like the others Paleozoic eras, it's look really like it's was an other planet, like it's was extraterrestrial. In land, it's was the insects and others arthropods who make the rules, with the famous Giant Dragonfly Meganeura and the Giant Centipede/Millepede Arthropleura, the two most iconics creatures from this time period and very populars ones. There was the Pulmonoscorpius, a giant scorpion, too (there was the Brontoscorpius too, but he lived long before this specie). And here, due to the air level more big and concentrate caused by the high vegetation and trees-ferns, was bigger but ironiquelly very similar in appearance to our modern insects and arthropodes relatives todays. They was just bigger versions of our insects in fact. There was some others vertebrates on land who cohabit with them, mainly reptiles, but there were not very numerous because they jsut begin to appears and was little compare to the most invertabrates. But in compensation, their body has many advantages to easily adapt to their new home. The most famous reptile was little lizard, the Petrolacosaurus and the Hylonomus, the two oldest reptiles know even to this day, but a never know before there was already some mammalian-reptiles in this time like the Ianthasaurus, a Dimetrodon and Edaphosaurus relative. Short after diverged from the amphians, the reptiles already diverged into two lineages, the normal reptiles and the mammalian-reptiles who later give the true mammals like us. The rivers and sea was ruled by giants amphibians (who pass the majority of their life in water), also invertebrates mainly the famous Sea Scorpions family like we can see in the video, and the fish order. In Sea Scorpion, who were a close relatives to the true scorpion family we know today, there was the megarachne (showed in the Walking With Monster serie under the name of Mesothelae but it's a current genius of spider, and was portrayed like a big spider thus in fact was a sea scorpion), the Pterygotus, a famous one of the family, and the jaekelopterus, know to be the biggest arthropode that ever lived. But the biggest specie during the Carboniferous was with no doubt the Hibberopterus (the Jeakelopterus lived during the Devonian). The Sea Scorpion lived also good in river that salt water in sea. In the amphibians, there was the Plathyhystrix, a complete terrestrial one who has a sail on the back like the famous Dimetrodon by convergent evolution, the Crassigyrinus (a very bizzare looknig one with and terrific face), the Proterogyrinus (a giant kind of salamander like the most of the temnospondylia and Labyrhintodontia). And in the fish, there was the giant predatory river Rhizodus who was a Sarcoptérygian, the family who include the current primitive and basal fish like Dipneustes and Coelacanth, along with the ancestors of the first land vertebrates. In the sea, there was the Orthocanthus, a fich who was a real shark but who not ressemble a shark at all) and the Edestus (also a shark) and the shark Campyloprion (who was not the famous Helicorpion but the era relative of this later) with their strange weird dentition. It here that the fearsome but majestic order of shark begin, pass the ages and the many global high extinction to us !
