The Devonian Period (420- 358 Million years ago) is also known as the era of Fish, since this was the the time these primordial vertebrates radiated into multiple clades, like the armored Placoderms, the first Sharks or the group that would give origin to all Tetrapods, the Sarcopterygii. These early tetrapods evolved lungs and took their first steps on a land that was still almost barren, until then only colonized by the earliest plants, some arthropods and giant fungi. This period ended in a massive extinction.

*correction at 2:11: Tartuosteus is not a Sarcopterygii. it's a much more primitive Pteraspidiformes Here is your choice for this month, the ofter underrated Era of fishes! Let me know in the comments what you think of it, if you learned of some new animals in this video, and remember you can vote for the theme of the next videos by joining the Membership! Wouldn't it be the largest creature to ever exist up until that point then ? Maybe before being beaten by a shark or the first Ichtyosaurs?
@BananaCake26
@BananaCake26 2 года назад
It might have been. Most creatures we will never know existed because we haven't discovered their fossils, or they didn't leave any. Dunkleosteus is only known because its head "armor" fossilized, the rest of the animal hasn't been found. If it didn't have those head plates, we probably wouldn't have found any fossils of it.

The Devonian is chock-full of oddities, and I'm so glad they've been represented here. The Heterosteus and Bungartius in particular are some that I love. And I love that some more obscure ones get some attention, such as Gonioclymenia, Parameteoraspis, Acutiramus, and Erbenochile. Your finest vids are the ones that focus on lesser known animals, and this is definitely one of your best! Please keep making vids on lesser known creatures, they're stellar! And also please make vids on the Ordovician, Silurian, Cambrian, and Precambrian seas. Edit: holy cow I've never gotten so many likes in such a short period of time. Thank you all! 💚

People are focusing heavily on dunkleosteus being shrunk without realizing that the same study that shrinks it, would also apply to the other large placoderms. Really the whole Devonian sea got shuffled around, and if the study holds true, then there really wouldn't have been any super large fauna.
@lucashernandez4345
@lucashernandez4345 Год назад
There is no point in the study because Dunkleosteus weighs too much to swim if he were so small with a tremendous armored plates.

it's nice that you have returned to using different colors, not only black, white, brown and green, but also yellow, blue, navy blue, purple, pink, orange, red, gold and many others as in the old days (I mean 2016 - 2019). Until I would like to see the entire reboot trilogy about Cenozoic creatures (not only Paleogene, Neogen and Ice Age, but also a separate film about animals that have become extinct in historical times like Thylacinus, Dodo - and with Mauritius and Roudriges, Aurochs, Quagga, Pink head Duck, Dinornis (Moa), Aepyornis, Voay, Megaladapis, Meiolania, Wolf from Fanklads, Hydrolamis (Giant Sea Cow), etc.)

I think you should do contemporaries. Like, "Dinosaurs that lived with Tyrannosaurus Rex", and, "Dinosaurs that lived with Allosaurus". It's cool to see what lived in the cretaceous for example, but its such a huge time period that its hard to know what actually lived alongside iconic dinosaurs.
@BigJFindAWay
@BigJFindAWay 11 месяцев назад
The difference that I see between Jurassic and Cretaceous dinosaurs is that Jurassic dinosaurs look very reptilian. They actually look like giant thunder lizards or at least like snakes that sprouted legs. One look at a Jurassic dinosaur and you’re like, yep that’s a reptile for sure. Cretaceous dinosaurs seem to be trying their best to be as unreptilian as possible. Many look birdlike and some actually look like they’re trying to be some sort of advanced creatures trying to evolve away from reptiles. Also in the Jurassic pterosaurs reigned supreme in the skies and filled every niche. And they too were very reptilian. Birds existed in the Jurassic but were very primitive and still looked semi reptilian. In the Cretaceous birds took over and occupied practically every niche. The surviving pterosaurs in order to survive had to grow to gargantuan sizes and look really really weird and they no longer looked reptilian at all but more like bat-bird hybrids on steroids.
