JT, awesome video and content as usual! Just wanted to say that you are in my top 3-4 favorite channels (Farm Craft, Diesel Creek etc..) Keep going brother, with your humor and the way you make videos you have the potential to get much bigger!!
Brings back memories of my childhood. My farmer grandpa had a '66 GMC 1/2 ton and the dash is just yours. Great to see you resurrect this old equipment. My dad used the truck on a regular basis and got REAL smooth shifts by double clutching it....
I’ve tried double clutching, and I think the boxes are so worn out that it doesn’t make much difference. Always seems to grind the main box going into 4 th unless I get lucky lol. Otherwise she just keeps going along 😉
Basically what you have is known as Holley 500 CFM the one you currently have looks like an old Ford Autolite 2100 but it was me I convert it over to EFI system maybe something like the ACE Deuces Wild 2 EFI Kit and add Inline Frame Mounted Universal EFI Fuel Pump with C5 Corvette Filter / Regulator which used in LS swap and add return line the fuel tank
It's been 30 years since I've been in the cab of a 64GMC. I had a 64 with a 401 36,000 GVW it had a 5-speed with a split rear. It ran awesome but its top speed was about 55 with a tail wind 😂 your truck looks awesome 👍 keep up the good work ✌️🇺🇲
Excellent video JT :) also think carb upgrade help out for 1964 Truck with 6 cylinders 401 on 2 barrel carb and gave new life too ! Maybe you try use 89 octane gas with 5% Ethonal and every time use put a grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel each month ! See if help out !
Love that old truck JT!! I’ve got a ‘66 Chevy dually stake body my Grandfather bought brand new in ‘66…been in the family it’s whole life. Love your work and I love that you don’t need the million dollar rig to be happy and successful. Well done my friend.
Whew, what a nice swap to a bigger shot of fire juice, yep and it does run good. But I did not know how you memorized the shifting of the gears. I mean I learned on a 3 on the tree, have done a 3 and 4 and 5 on the floor. But never ,I say never have I driven a 20 speed. I was lost as soon as you pulled out of the driveway. You moved the levels in a pattern I would have trouble remembering. Anyway more power to ya, and Fluffy.
Good job JT! Absolutely love your truck! I have 3 old trucks that are in the process of, well, repair in some shape or form. '66 IH 1700 with 345 is getting an updated distributor as the original one belongs in a museum. It also needs electrical work done to it. 1980 IH (old smoky) with 9 ltr needs a clutch. '84 GMC w/427 4bbl is getting its 650 holly rebuilt. Also getting new distributor with wires, coils, and plugs. Also getting new t-stats as it has no heat. Used to be a Penske-Hertz truck and it is my favorite as it comes with rear disc brakes. This means no nail-biters when a quick stop is required. Thanks 😊 for all of your content JT as I can relate to your "disease" extremely well. 😊
Glad the Carb Made a Difference. Neat old truck, you don’t see many old Chevy’s on the road working anymore. That Transmission is definitely a younger generation anti theft device. The first Semi I drove on our farm was a 1979 Mack R Model with a 2 Stick Mack Transmission, nice old truck, but felt like it had no suspension. Thanks for the videos, Have a good weekend.
I’m glad that got you a little more power/performance, I guess there’s only so much you can do with those old V6s, nice fix. Good to see Fluffy make an appearance, haven’t seen her in a while. 🍻
Thanks for sharing we had a 69 dodge single axle grain truck on the farm I worked at as a teenager and they had it since new it only had 30k miles back in the 90s I loved that old truck we didn’t use it for much but you could guarantee it would start and get the job done no matter how long it sat I wanted to convert it into a flat bed and drive it for whatever I needed but I never got them to sell it 😢 take care buddy keep warm during this cold weather
Awesome buddy, we had 2 of these ole V6’s growing up a 64 and 66. Dad never did like them so we put a 350 2 barrel in both of them and they run like a race car afterwards
Appreciate the content. Those old engines didn’t have hardened valve seats from the factory so if the heads have never been off and upgraded she might have some valves recessed in the heads.
You forgot to set the new gasket that you are not going to use on the intake and then take it off and hold it against the bottom of the new carburetor just as a check. Also sometimes the air filters would be shorter than required and wouldn't seal in the housing. Glad to see you are not putting a Holley on there. Had one of them start on fire.
Well, I did give it all a check over just off camera. 😉. I’ve never had a Holley catch fire luckily on me, have had pretty good luck with the 2 bbl in the past
Great improvement to Jimmy! Now you need to take off the front bumper and throw it on the ground, jump up and down on it a few times to straighten it out. Love that Ole Truck. Jet the carb as fat as you can, and I think you will see an improvement. Really Enjoy your videos JT, and getting 2 a week, well that's just Awesome! Stay Safe and God Bless 🙏💪👍🇺🇲🚜
New (h*na carb helped out.👍 I think I know the problem 😁 Good old truck made in the USA/ no (h*na steel on this beauty! She's not happy with this foreign object added to her run ability. Thanks for taking us along on the "fix" great job as always 👍
Nice old GMC. I have a 64 Chevy C80 Bought in 67 Same truck other than Grill , Dash and engine. Mine was originally 409 changed to 427 in 1980. Been a great truck still used today. For what's it worth, I would suggest double clutching the Aux. And slow shifting motion down on both. You don't want to get into those boxes if avoided, parts are getting scarce. Rears should be 7.17 ratio 38K Eatons. New Sub here enjoying your adventures.
Thanks! Appreciate the info. Still trying to slow my shifting on that. It’s gotten better, I’ve tried double clutching on the aux, but can’t really tell that it’s any better or worse lol I’ll bet the 427 moves that c80 along nicely!
you need to adjust the valves on it. 12 on intake &20 on exhaust. also there are pcv valves that screw into the heads under the valve cover needs repalced. they cause a vacume leek if not replaced oftan enough. hope this helps.
I think it’s super cool how you rescued that old grain truck. No small feat! Are you going to give the engine compartment one of your patented degreasing jobs? How hard would it be to bend the front bumper back to shape?
I may give it the ol’ super duper degreasing😆. That bumper is made from spring steel I swear lol. I’ve swung a 10 lb at it many times, just seems to bounce back and never get straight lol
My Father drove straight truck with 5 speed and ruxle, then he started driving for a guy that had the same set up have,,I guess he did some cursing before he got it figured out, lol.
Hey JT, what is that white stuff by the leftside hood hinges? Do ur truck have low gears in the diff? good job on the new carb changed. Fluffy missed-out on going for a boot. Fluffy approved the job..
I’ll have to double check the hinge stuff… not sure lol. Those rears are super low geared, I forget the ratio on the tag but it’s lower than I’ve ever heard of them being
Ah, farm trucks 😅 Why are you splitting gears w an empty truck ? These old Jimmy's can use a compression bump for sure. They were made to run on "commercial gas" or as we called it Buss Gas. Really the bottom of the refinery stuff that could loosely be called gas. So like 7 1/2 to 1 CR or so ... Get them up to 8 1/2 or 9 and they wake right up 😁 But, that's a big job, so prolly not ...
Fantastic 😁 but why not 650 CFM ? Ever thought about trading for a truck with a CUMMINGS 350 0r 400 ? Day cab with a grain trailer ? Great video . Thanks
My old 66 with straight 6 , 292 cu in , is not a speedster but pulled hard in the field and on the the road to the bins. If yours is a V8, how come it wouldn’t have a four barrel like my 366 or 427 . Don’t forget to make sure you gas cap is vented
J T are you still running regular gas. I switched to premium after the ethanol was being added to the regular years ago, reset the timing and away you go. I run that engine in my uni-system 704 , 60ft sprayer with a 500 gal tank at 8 mph no problem.
are those vacuum switches below the ashtrays? I'd definitely go chasing vacuum tubing to see if there's an accessory leak. fortunately these old mechanicals are minimal on accessories :)
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 that's why the 2 speed axle ain't shifting 😉 You're pretty thorough so I think you might actually have a worn engine or a new engine with unseated rings. Possibly tappets out of adjustment. Maybe not worth opening any engine covers--the less you know 🎵🌈
I been meaning to ask but Forgot...I LOVE How You Strap Your SHUTTLE-QUAD to the Grab-Bar on back of Combine...just Wonder How it does Tracking behind... Seems-Like It'd want to Gett-Wonkey and Find It's Own Path?!!🤔
That's what I was thinking...I thought of doing on DAD's 1979 4400 but figured if Bar Gott BENT...He'd be MAD...and We go Down LANEs and FIELDs...Surely is Better on Smooth-Surface like a Road...Thanks for Info...and I Don't LOVE Much...but Your-Stuff is INTERESTING!!!...I would have a Friend Help Me More...but maybe Your Projects would Go So-Quickly We couldn't Get-to Know Them before are GONE...Like the 5010🚜😭...but Still was COOL To SAVE&PASS-ON💪👍
Just curious but are you sure that gas cap is a vented cap ? I doubt that a truck that old had a sealed fuel system......If it needs a vented cap then it may be starved for fuel after running a short time......just a thought.
I don't know... 500cfm... might be time for a 5 point racing harness. If the engine was healthy it ought to be making about 200hp & 375 lb ft of torque so that ain't too bad. It'll be interesting to see how the old girl does on the hills when loaded.
I don’t need to, but it still works better when I do. The auxiliary trans has 4 gears in it, I only use the top two and it’s just right. She’s still long winded if I were to put the aux it say direct and run through the other gears on the main
Some thing we do not have, gasoline driven trucks, small or large, every motor is diesel, this includes farm tractors, came as a bit of a shock after watching JT's barn n grill, his Massey 165 had spark plug leads, whats the world coming to, they have been diesel from the start of time, 1964 or there abouts...........Need to know, I counted 12 gear changes, is that the norm for such a small truck?.....whats the world co.........well you know whats coming next...........
Keep in mind, the truck is a 64 one the 165 is a 70. So …. The correct saying is “what has the world come from 😆. Most tractors were diesels but the older trucks were a lot gassers. That is a 5x4 trans, but I don’t use all the gears. 1st on the main is too low to be necessary, and I generally start the aux in 2 nd and then just 3-4 as I’m up shifting
Alot of Tractors still had gas engines even into the late 1970s. IH, Ford, Massey, even Oliver , and John deere made 1100 MF and JD 4020s with Gas and LP engines
On a small utility tractor a gas engine was a blessing on a bitter cold morning that you didn’t expect to need a tractor. They’d fire right up with decent maintenance.
mybe next time you go to the store, you could pick up a 5 gallon drum of degreaser and read the label and see if you can figure out were to use it..this might be a challenge
You silly goofball, 5 gallon comes in pails not drums 😆. And I can’t read anyway, should I just pour it in the gas tank? Man, I’m sure lucky to have a nice fella like you to leave kind words on my videos ☺️
