Care for Your Knee After Knee Replacement Surgery
In this video, Dr. Mark Hammerberg, provides details on two important activities to help during recovery from knee replacement surgery.
Having pain in your knees? Appointments are now available at Denver Health for patients to be seen quickly and if surgery is needed, we have a group of excellent surgeons who offer joint replacement surgeries shortly after your clinic visit.
Denver Health now allows patients to schedule appointments directly with orthopedic providers, skipping the need for a referral from a primary care doctor. However, certain insurance plans might still require a referral including Medicare and Medicaid. This change simplifies access to orthopedic care, ensuring you can get the orthopedic help you need without unnecessary delays.
To find out if surgery is right for you, visit DenverHealth.org/Orthopedics or call 303-436-4949 to make an appointment.

Had my RTKR six weeks ago and I kept replaying this video in my head. Did my best, discharged from PT after 9 visits, 120/0, age 69, female, overweight.

I am the same, new RTKR..... I am doing this too. I had an extra 10 years of damage so my doctor said he hoped we could still be friends.... But I am FAITHFUL with the pre exercises and now these. I hope to plow through the PT that is scheduled. You encouraged me!!! SO MUCH !!!

When I had my first knee done, I was still working, I would sit at my desk, with my chair raised up so my foot did not sit on the floor, and swing my leg back and forth. My doctor was impressed with my knee bends. I have full bend on that knee. Now for the other one, ten hears older….81, pray for me.

@@daveanything my life is 100 percent changed!!! I did have both knees done 3 weeks apart! My first one was a breeze within just a couple days. I was walking around without my walker or cane anything it really was phenomenal…. My second knee it was not as smooth sailing. Surgery took almost 3 hours longer and I actually had to spend one night in the hospital. Recovery on that knee took at least a month before I felt confident doing stairs and walking without my walker. it’s been two years I now go rock climbing… I go to the gym three or four times a week and try to walk 2 to 3 miles every day. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

TKR 3 months ago and I am fighting the bent knee syndrome because (don’t make my mistake) I was sitting on couch with leg extended on ottoman. It looked straight and level but after 2 months of PT I was at 20 degrees. Then realized that my butt was depressed into cushions causing a bent knee although it looked straight. Now after a few weeks of extra stretching and correct sitting position on couch I am down to 8 degrees. Maybe another 2 weeks to go and then it will be straightened. This is good advice from this doctor. It’s not near as easy as he is describing but stick with the extra pain and it will help healing. Peace and good luck all

@@bradje12 I was off pain meds after about 2 months. The pain meds made it a lot easier to stretch the leg in both directions. Another month in hindsight would have been better. I don't think I could have done it without some help. Getting off the meds was easy. (some said to me it is hard) I almost have no pain now. After a long walk or some such, it can be sore but gone the next day. Still getting better and noticeably so. Hope it goes well.

Love the sound effects. My advice to those that haven't had their surgery yet; start these exercises well before surgery to get the best range of motion (ROM) before the surgery. Trying g to recover a ROM will be much more difficult if you didn't have it to start with.

I have recently started going to PT for my RTKR. My physical therapist here in Nashville TN said the same thing you did, almost word for word.I have sifted through many videos to find a good basic routine I can work out with for my total knee replacement recovery. I think this is the best because of your straight forward explanation. You show that it is not going to feel comfortable (at all!) but that it is going to give measurable results. Thank you so much.

Hello Mark, I'm on the 4th day after my knee surgery (ACL reconstruction+meniscus repair + some other ligament) Yesterday i visited a physio who gave me 2 exercises to do which differ to yours. I have been reading many comments in which users state after months(in some cases years) they cannot fully flex their knees or straighten or swallow, painful and so on.. do you think the main reason is because they did NOT do the relevant procedures immediately after the op i.e. reducing swelling asap n performing relevant exercises? Because i heard, later on in the future it becomes more tougher and almost impossible to achieve.. today is my 4th day but i want to recover as quick as possible. My knee is absolutely swollen but i can keep a straight knee but as for bending,my knees are very stiff.. Would you recommend I push through the pain barrier to get there? Specialist himself said the screw is secure and i can walk on my foot.. which makes me think i can do this? I also smoke and i know this delays the recovery but that's another story.. I can go through the pain with your green light.. Thanks in advance Ps: do i need to elevate my knee when putting frozen ice on?

Hello Dr. Hammerberg - I am a 61 y/o adult male and I need your help! - I had my two (2) knees and my right hip replaced. Same Doctor (Dr. Paul Lombardi M.D.) - "supposedly" a great Morristown, N.J. based Surgeon? Well, my left knee (01/2016) is fine, my right hip (01/2019) is fine - BUT MY RIGHT KNEE (04/2019) is a total disaster!! It has now been two years and three months since the right knee was done and it is Swollen DAILY the size of a Watermelon!! The stiffness and swelling is beyond ridiculous! What is wrong? I had another Doc in his group X-ray my right knee in January 2021 and he claimed everything is structurally fine - I question this because while structurally things may "look fine", The DAILY Pain, Soreness, Stiffness and Swelling is my body telling me something is radically wrong with the right knee surgery. My left knee is fine and is over five years old - The right knee is a MESS and only 2.25 years old. ANY SUGGESTIONS ? Infection maybe? Scar Tissue? Please reply with your recommendations....Thanks!

Clinical Practice Guidelines for Physical Therapists for patients post-TKA indicate "four high-quality studies and one moderate-quality study evaluated knee positioning during the immediate postoperative period and its effect on blood loss, swelling, edema management, and ROM. One high-quality study found decreased knee blood loss and knee circumference and improved knee flexion ROM when comparing the resting position of 30 degrees of hip flexion and 30 degrees of knee flexion with 30 degrees of hip flexion and full knee extension at 3 and 7 days after TKA." These most current recommendations state that the best position for the knee is flexed/elevated and not extended/elevated like shown in your video. What evidence and argument do you have to justify extension vs. flexion immediately post-op?
