Sad fact: Mara Wilson's mother was hospitalized with terminal breast cancer and died 4 months before Matilda came out in theaters. DeVito dedicated the film to Mara's mother and let Mara stay at his and Rhea's house when her dad was at work. He also showed the final recording of the movie to her mother so she would be able to see her daughter's performance before she died
@laurenfrey873

@@jacobschmidt2771 isn’t it though? I'm glad he didn't tear apart Matilda for one very good reason. Stories like Matilda help teach kids that the reality is that not all adults are right. Kids in abusive and neglectful families are taught that what they go through is right and normal, and movies like this help them realise they're not alone and it does happen to other kids.

From what I've read in interviews, Danny Devito is one of the nicest people you could work with in Hollywood; Mara Wilson have spoken about how he and his then wife became mentors and stand-in parents for her on the set of Matilda while her own mother battled cancer. And at the set for It's always sunny, he apparently often brings people together to cook dinner for them, and makes sure everybody keeps themselves mentally healthy and stress-free. Kind people like that are very rare in movie industry.
@moonlitmortician6694
@moonlitmortician6694 3 года назад
What I love about DeVito in It's Always Sunny is just how much his character reflects the behind the scenes drama. Back when the show was still young, the executives threatened to cancel it unless the show runners could get a big name star signed on. DeVito agreed to the role, keeping the show afloat much like how his character keeps the gang in the clear by bank rolling their shenanigans.

If I remember right, DeVito was one of the first famous actors who did the cameo with their own name in the Simpsons (albeit James Earl Jones before him). I remember listening the comment reels of earlier episodes where they had the struggle of getting anyone to do camoes with their own name for not believing on some family animation, so DeVito sure hit my soft spot for doing that.

@darylchurch2115
@darylchurch2115 3 года назад
I'm glad someone else thinks so. I'm a big comic fan and The Penguin is a character I just never understood, he was just a slightly deformed gangster, so what? Danny DeVito as The Penguin, now that was an interesting character, he was disgusting and cruel, vulgar but with a weird humanity to him. Some said that his version of Penguin was confused but he reminds me of a real life insane murderers, yes they're scary monsters but it's also not their fault and they need help. When I think of the Penguin, I think of Danny DeVito's spectacular performance~
@matthewjones6786
@matthewjones6786 2 года назад
I'd recommend Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal of the Penguin in Gotham, it's my personal favorite. I think he nailed that wonderful "savage animal wearing the skin of a sophisticate" motif. That's not to disparage Devito of course, because while his arc may not be perfect, in terms of acting and look, he's phenomenal!
@ComaAlpha
@ComaAlpha Год назад
I'm sorry, but wrong. Oswald from Gotham and from Batman The Tell Tale Series are both better. I loved the theory of him getting the nickname from his injury induced limp walk in Gotham. And loved the back and forth banter between him and Bruce in The Tell Tale Series. Burton's Penguin isn't even a person. Fascinating to look at, but watching is a different story. I can't believe Mysterio can pin Big Show for a 3 count and I can't believe that version of Penguin ever exists. If the suspension of belief doesn't work than the performance/direction doesn't work.

I think 'It's always sunny' is the best showcase so far for DeVito's talents, it lets him fully indulge his darkness, silliness and acting talent, and he's a perfect complement to the rest of the ensemble. The thing about Matilda is that there *is* a reason it's so dark but also ridiculous. There's really no way to get around the fact that this story is about overcoming abuse and neglect. Matilda's world is so mean because there are real children who's parents, the ones who hold their entire lives in their hands, absolutely hate them. That is... an INSANELY uncomfortable thing to confront in any context, but Devito steps up to the plate and does it through a child's perspective no less. I mean really think about it, how many kids go through horrible things and have no outlet to understand or cope with any of it because the media facilitating that is never *for* them? The idea that a child's experiences are not child friendly is just sad in its own right, and overcoming that dissonance actually makes Matilda important.

One of Roald Dahl’s consistent themes throughout his books is having the villains be over-the-top, ugly, black hearted grownups who treat children like vermin. The Witches, Spiker and Sponge from the Giant Peach, the Trunchbull here in Matilda. With their child victims being the ones who rise up to get back at them. It was essentially his way of telling an underdog story. It’s ultimately why I consider Matilda the best movie adaptation of its source material. It didn’t shy away from how nasty, scary and pure evil the Trunchbull was in the book; throwing kids out of windows, forcing one of them to eat an enormous cake and even locking them in what was essentially an iron maiden. Holy oompa-loompa hell!

I have a friend who works in Congress and he told me a tale of a congressmen past down through the generations of congress. You see, there was once a congressman who would vote to veto any bill that came through congress, no matter what the bill said or even if it did align with his views, he would always vote to veto it without fail. In fact, he was so infamous for this that they gave him the nickname: Danny the veto.

Of all the essays you have done on so many topics over the years, I think this truly was the best. If I wanted to sum up just how talented Devito is, its that growing up and watching all of his movies, I never really noticed his height. Yea a movie like twins uses it effectively against Schwarzenegger, but Devito commands each performance so completely, I honestly never really noticed it until I was much older, and really never had a thought about how atypical he is until seeing this. You never notice Danny Devito because he totally commands every role he is in to the point where you never see him as Danny Devito. That is such a rare and unique talent, it's great to see something heartfelt here really draw attention to it.

Death to Smoochy is in my Top 10 Favorite Films of All-Time. I love it simply because of it being Dark Satire. It makes fun of the Childrens' Television Business, Organized Crime, Corporations, Corruption, it hits them all unapologetically. Plus this is an unrestrained performance by Robin Williams. He's off-tilt and I love every moment of it. My favorite scene is when he calls the Smoochy actor (Ed Norton) and warns him that he's gonna hunt him down; saying he's going on Safari before making a poor Elephant trumpeting sound before hanging up. It's so delightfully dark and silly, it's really worth the watch.
