Would be interesting to see one on Robin Williams? He may be gone but never forgotten and how much of an impact he had on comedy and a lot of peoples childhood. Edit: First off wow. Over 800 likes in two days. Second I love both actors and they bring a smile to everyone. Jim Carrey I have some memories of with mostly Grinch, Bruce Almighty and both Ace Ventura movies but I also remember Robin Williams a lot more because he was in a way a child like all of us. An imaginary friend that would always be there for you. Another career dive that would be a great tribute would be to Christopher Plummer who just passed away at 91.
@@austinburras2993 Will tried to go the Carrey/Williams route into dramatic acting roles with "Stranger Than Fiction" but it wasn't a hit and he went immediately back to goofball comedy. If he had stuck with it for a few more roles I think he would have broken through his image and made it. He can do drama well, and he can act well. I hope he gives it another try because whatever the fuck it is he's doing now, is NOT working.
I know, right? Critics at the time said they were surprised at how bad his acting was in that film, failing to realise that Count Olaf is a bad actor, and Carrey's acting is so good he can portray a bad actor acticing badly so well that it's as if he himself is the bad actor. Genius.
Honestly, it's become trendy lately to hate on the 2004 movie in favor of the TV show cause "iT's NoT lIKE tHe BoOKs" (as a fan of the books, I can say that while it's not page-for-page accurate, the tone is a lot more accurate to them) and I'm just so glad Doug doesn't seem to hate it, too
I want to pay respect to Nostalgia Critic, as he managed to talk about the whole Jim Carrey's career without saying a word about his personal life and all the issues Jim had because of it.
@matt fahringer he said he would only talk about their personal lives and issue if it affected their careers, safe to say in Jim's case it hasn't. So there was no reason for Critic to bring them up
Oh my goodness, is he really almost sixty?! Man, I'm getting old. Seriously, though: I really like this series style and format! I hope you continue doing these!
Jim Carrey’s performance as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie may have revitalized his career. Expect him to be in another one or two big roles in the next couple of years.
Considering he played #46 himself during the debates and after the November election confirmed his victory, I say it'll be fun to see what else he'll be in
Yeah, and even though a lot of people gave the movie flak for it, I really respected what they did with his character to show how his own arrogance and obsession drove him to become Robotnik as he appears in the classic games by the end of the movie. I can't wait to see him again in the sequel!
@@matthewlawton9241 I always thought he could do it entertainingly. and even if they sticked with that AWEFUL Sonic I would have watched to see how he did. be a Raul Julia of the movie
The initial reaction to Jim Carrey's casting was generally one of complete bafflement, considering how he neither sounds nor looks anything like Dr. Eggman of the Sonic the Hedgehog games. It didn't help that Carrey's Hollywood movie career had been floating in shallow waters for the past six years, and his hiring was seen by some as Stunt Casting by a studio desperate for a big celebrity name to play the villain. *Post-release, it's widely agreed that Carrey absolutely nailed the character with his outrageously over-the-top, yet intimidating when necessary performance, and at times even sounds uncannily close to the gravelly-voiced character from the games.*
I grew up with both the original sonic games and my dad showing me Jim carrey, the mask, the Truman show, liar liar, and few others. I was born in the early 2000s so most of these movies my dad showed me via DVD. When I saw the original trailer(with furry sonic) I was at college and a group of us watched the trailer, the only thing we thought would be good is carrey as Eggman, despite the fact he doesnt really look like him. I do enjoy the movie and I'm glad they removed the furry sonic and made it better, but I love carrey performance.
That part was weird. There were times he actually sounded almost spot on to how Eggman sounds but it would only be for a few seconds at a time then he’d go back to Jim.
I just have to say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favourite films because it's so beautiful and so meaningful to me. The first time I fell in love in my freshman year of college, I watched that movie for the first time with my boyfriend and I cried and said, "Please don't forget about me no matter what happens" and then after we broke up, I worried that maybe he would try to forget and that I wouldn't have meant much to him. And then five years later, I was having a rough day and I saw him when I was getting lunch and he asked about my dog and my brother and about the novels I'd written and we talked about Eternal Sunshine again and I was so happy that even though we had both moved on that he still remembered everything. It made me feel like I mattered to him. I think that's why movies that deal with memory like Eternal Sunshine and Coco work so well- because we all want to feel like we mattered and when people remember us, it shows that. Sorry for rambling, but I just have a lot of feelings tied to that movie.
I will say that nowadays, he's cleaned up from that odd "none of us matter" way of thinking. He was going through a period of flops, had someone close to him die and being blamed for it, etc, and it had a REALLY BAD effect on his mental health. Over the past couple of years, though, he seemed to... well... be okay. He seems to have gotten through that okay and ceased the odd philosophical talk.
@@damnedash9526 I have no idea if that was the intent, but look, you can't tell me that the way he was saying it didn't come across as a bit pretentious and mean.
@@matthewlawton9241 I feel like it's the right message but the wrong execution. In the end the woman was just trying to do her job and it would have been much easier to just have a "Yes, yes, thank you" response.
I laughed at this comment, and then realized that that scene in The Grinch, which even little kids get the joke and laugh at, most likely came from Jim's experiences with depression. Damn.
@@MandleRoss wish robin William could of found a way to deal with his probably would still be giving laughs to people and night at museum 3 being his last film giving his last words while playing teddy Roosevelt
@@Deadhead-kq4hr Well, Robin had a rare disease that was gonna kill him within a few months and also make his life a living hell in the meanwhile. It wasn't Parkinson's. His wife made a statement that that was a misdiagnosis. It was something much worse. So I don't blame him for doing what he did while he was still able to.
Definitely. His comedies are awesome, but his dramas like The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon and The Number 23 are amazing, also. 👍
@@zacharycollins9485 Number 23 was a flop. His only successful dramatic movies were Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. No other serious Jim Carrey movies were as successful as those. I guess “I Love You Philip Morris” was “successful” but not as much as those 3
I do agree, but I can see why actors hold it in such esteem. The Academy is your peers in acting and Hollywood, it's an affirmation from people that know exactly what goes into what you do. That said I personally just look at it as Hollywood jerking itself off and don't understand the mainstream hype, but I can understand someone actually in the industry thinking it's a big deal.
Now that the Oscars are going for quotas, they've turned into participation trophies. Hello to Special Olympics for actors; goodbye to at least a pretense at rewarding quality.
I think most kids with ANY energy imitated him, even before he was a thing... Course he perfected his craft, but hey, you can only tell you’re success by your imitations.
@@rjtp2552 Fun Fact: Prince Eric from the Little Mermaid was originally going to be played by Jim Carrey and Ariel was going to be played by Melisa Fahns.
I watched that again recently and thought the religious tone is a bit too much. Then I remembered I was watching Bruce Almighty and Morgan Freeman is God. What the hell am I saying?
Imagine making the Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura all in the same year, like I still can’t think of another actor with such an impressive hot streak in the same year.
1994 was the year of Jim Carrey and Tim Allen (Allen had the #1 film - Santa Clause, #1 TV show - Home Improvement and #1 book - Don’t Stand too close to a Naked Guy).
Always loved Jim Carrey growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Him, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams were the three most predominant comedic actors of my childhood and would love to see the last two pop up in this new series.
And Kathleen Turner! I saw Peggy Sue Got Married when it was released in 1986 as a teenager, and I recall it being an entertaining film. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. I hope you've checked it out.
Danny deserves it PLEASE do him for sure I enjoy Always Sunny in Philadelphia even if some of the episodes us just goofy and strange he at least makes it watchable.
@@axelnilsson5124 Fun Fact: Prince Eric from the Little Mermaid was originally going to be played by Jim Carrey and Ariel was going to be played by Melisa Fahns.
LMFAO! I don’t remember What I got but that sounds about Right. I kinda miss the blip . Tv /TGWTG days when the Producers actually Wrote jokes around the commercial breaks. CR from Familiar Faces did one of the Best ones where he Got all dramatic and said something like “Look into the Abiss and See what your Soul shows you” or something like that I could be entirely wrong, And Then when he comedy back he’s all casual and like “What Did you get. I got a middle age mom telling PG rated jokes for Kraft Cheese”
I'm still waiting for a "Birdman" type movie for Jim Carrey. An oscar-nominated drama that puts him back on the map as a dramatic actor and not just a comedic one. He's definitely capable of it.
This video made me realise something: Jim is my favorite actor period! I just never thought about it seriously until now. I always feared the day I'd hear he's gone...that would hurt. My childhood hero right here!
I don’t know how you can just call his performance in eternal just “good”. He was perfect playing a role at that point no one could see him play: quiet, reflective and serious. He was not at all comedic in his role at all but didn’t play a straight man either. He was just Joel.
Carrey was such a MASSIVE part of my childhood. I can't even count the amount of times I've watched The Mask, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar growing up.
Ace Ventura is actually offensive these days… people thought making fun of transgender people was funny in 1994, but now people go as far as saying that it aged terribly just because it was offensive for the transgender people 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Actually, no. Robert Downey Junior had a pretty huge low and with his entry as Iron Man, brought him so goddamn high that he never has to act ever again in his life if he so wished. I think he had been close to death because he was into drugs and alcohol, but then got clean and was given the Iron Man job? I could've sworn he had a helluva low compared to Jim.
Honestly, robotnik is one of my favourite of his roles. It’s easily the most Carey he’s been in a while and does justice to the character. If eggman’s current voice actor left the role, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carey took on the role in the games, his performance is that good
My feeling is that Doug really wants to move away from Nostalgia Critic, if not retire NC altogether and do some different things, but he's worried that his fans will abandon him if he does. It could also be that Mike Michaud doesn't want to lose NC out of fear that Channel Awesome will fall apart without the Critic at it's center. I say if Doug wants to end NC and try something else, he should go for it. He's been doing NC for years now, and his true fans will support whatever he chooses to do.
I've always found Jim Carrey a bit odd, but he still has talent, especially as Count Olaf because he plays a bad actor, but he still does a good job at it
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 I like Neil Patrick Harris potrayal but Jim Carrey is surprisingly terrifying in that role while also being seriously hilarious. So Count Olaf, a terrible actor, managed to have 2 good actors portraying him. Ironic
I passed Jim Carrey once in 2019 lane splitting in my motorcycle on the 405. He was polite, we moved out of the way, I waved thanks and he waved back :)
Growing up in the 90’s, Jim Carrey was my favourite actor. I’d watch The Mask, and the Ace Ventura movies multiple times a week and still laugh my butt off all the whole time.
Can I just say I've been loving how many new things your trying out? It's been a real treat to watch you use your unique writing and charm to dive into different and/or more specific subject matters.
A 90s icon who fell out of touch in the 2000s only to build back up into relevancy and back into classic form? Jim Carrey really is like Sonic the Hedgehog.
When I first saw the "Icons" interview I had a similar reaction to Jim. I mean what the fuck, "we're celebrating icons"? Could you be more vague? What the hell does that even mean? Yes he was condescending and his tetrahedron bit cracked me up but he spoke his mind. He said what anyone else would be thinking but no one else had the balls to say it. Love you Jim.
Eh, that's because it was more less still Doug being Doug just with the NC costume. I'd argue when he does stuff like that, he's himself. When he's doing comedy reviews, that's when he's NC.
I agree, and you could argue that's the point of these editorial videos, but it does still feel different from when he posts a "Doug Reviews" video. I assume because these are scripted and the Doug as himself stuff is not.
Love the shout out. My grandfather was a pastor and worked with the mentally disabled with catholic charities. Really good people at that organization.
It’s safe to say that I have worshipped Jim Carrey my whole life. I mean, I basically have been watching him since the day I was born. No joke. His trio of super hits were all in ‘94 and that is my birth year. And full disclosure: Jim Carrey was my first crush. I have no regrets 😂 I’m happy to see that I am not the only one who still remembers him and his talents, and hope that he can be what he once was. I’m very hopeful after I watched Sonic. Heck, HE was the reason I watched Sonic. Jim Carey will forever remain my all time favorite comedian and actors. I love him in Ace Ventura and The Truman Show. I lie. I love him in most of his movies. You made my day with this video. Thank you 🙏🏻
Doug, you did this video because you were inspired and influenced by Carrey’s performances and work. If you do any more of these deep dives you should concentrate on other artists that similarly touched you. Perhaps someone like Tim Burton?
His Robotnik in Sonic was by far one of the biggest surprises I’ve ever seen and his enthusiasm for the upcoming sequel even though he has admitted in the last to not being interested in making sequels, it shows that his future is going in a good direction
Fun fact: Jim Carrey was set to play Howard Hughes in a biopic by Christopher Nolan, but it got pulled after The Aviator went into production. I'm still hoping one day that will happen.
@@arlenfreeman3439 Fun Fact: Prince Eric from the Little Mermaid was originally going to be played by Jim Carrey and Ariel was going to be played by Melisa Fahns.
Okay... your advertisements are made of gold. These are some of the most gripping and zany pieces of media I have ever seen. Doug, are you voicing both announcers?
I'll give it this. Jim as Robotnik was one of the best dang parts of the Sonic movie. He really is at his best when he can go all out crazy like that. Sure he looked less like Dr. Robotnik and more like a guy going "I'm Dr. Robotnik! I can't be Jim Carrey, he doesn't have a mustache!" right up until that scene at the end... but man he was a barrel of fun.
Have you seen "Carrey family reunion" video? It have so good references to his roles. And if someday he will get his own LEGO minifigure i hope it will not be limited because i will buy it for sure
i have to say i liked when jim decided to do comedy but in a adult way that was out of the box thats why i loved me myself and iren its a great love story with over the top comedic moments that shows he can be humble and funny with a twist of crazy and still come out amazing and his art work is incredible if you have never seen comedians in cars getting coffee please watch the episode with jim.
