Video about how I built my own cargo bike! And hopefully to inspire you to build your own!
It took me about 6 weeks in total. Probably 4 evenings a week about 2 hours, and two full saturdays.
If you want to build one too, I hope this video gives you the courage to just do it! Just go online and watch all the video's, get inspiration and design your bike in your head. Make a sketch, and start playing around :-)
Ask all questions you have! And let me know if you started your own project now.
Costs for the project (in EUR):
MTB Giant Coldrock: 30
Kids junk bike: 5
Steel: around 80
Bike parts, tires, cables etc: 50
Misc parts, bolts, joints: 25
Wooden cargo box: 75
Paint: 30
Total parts: 295
Welder LIDL: 90 (discount)
Drill press 0.5kW 16mm: 90
But you can keep those for the next project ;-)
Special DIY-thanks to these guys:
Phil Vandelay: a very skilled builder and good educational video
• How to Build a DIY Car...
Johnny Wikk: Great taste of paint, this video inspired me to do it myself!

Well done, especially the geometry of the steering rod. It ist not so exposed, but still allows a high range for the angle of the front wheel. Easy to find, or did you need several trials ?

Nice looking bike! I am making a cargo bike using the same donor bike and taking inspiration from Phill aswell :). I'm just making the frame with two side rails instead of one big central one (google for kpcyclery, he also has a very good tutorial). Good tip in extending the spring instead of using a really long one. Ive been strugling to find a spring that is both long and strong enough. I'll just have to find a strong spring now (don't have a spare windshield wiper unfortunately). Also wondering what shop in the netherlands you got the wood for the box from?
@zoltan9
@zoltan9 3 года назад
Hi Erik, thanks! :) I like those double-beam types too, probably more stiffness in the frame, but also more room for mistakes in alignment ;-) So this design was easier for my first bike! I think you can find the wiper-springs on any junkyard for 1 EUR, or on a forum, marketplace... The wood I orderer from opmaatzagen.nl you can get any shape, rounded corners etc. Great site for small projects like this! (9mm betonplex, anti-slip for the floor)

Great job. can you please share from which master plan do you build your cargo bike from please?
@zoltan9
@zoltan9 4 года назад
Hi Oliver, I don't have a master plan :) I guess the two guys I linked in description are kind of my master plan. I wanted a cargo floor area of 80cm x 60cm, and that's how the project started. I made some drawings, but I mostly just figured out how to do it at the spot. Like the kick stand, I could only figure out the height when the wheels were on the bike, and after that you figure out the longitudinal position of the hinge. Most of the times, one decision or design requirement dictates some following steps.
@SnelfNL
@SnelfNL 3 года назад
The guy that made the video in the link has a set of plans you can buy. I used the same video to make my bike and it really gives you a good idea about how to make most of the parts, but the plans have a lot more information if you need it.

Hi, the bike turned out nice! I am about to build a cargo bike myself using a folding bike. I got my impression from the Muli Cargo bike -> it is way smaller than a full size long john with its 20" back and 16" front wheel. I am wondering. You used 35x2mm steel tube which has an inner diameter of about 31mm. According to my notes 1" steering tubes have 30,2mm inner diameter. Do you had issues fit the bearing shells into the steerer tube? Weren't they floppy? I would have shot on the the 34mmx2mm one, but this might a too hard fit. A 1" fork shaft has 22,3mm, the 22mm tube should fit okay I guess. What is the wall thickness you used? I guess 1mm should be enough to transmit the low torque forces. I do not think the fork shaft itself adds much to the rigidity of the frame itself. Anyway, ride safe! You must be from the Netherlands because you and your kids are not wearing bicycle helmets. :D (And another clue is you license plate on you VW Bus)
@zoltan9
@zoltan9 3 года назад
Thanks! Yeah, the steerer tube was a bit of a ‘trick’. For the fork itself the 22x2mm was a perfect fit. 2mm thick because that was available in the shop. The tube I would prefer to use 34x2 and dremel it out to a fit, but this size was impossible to find... so I cut two strips from an old spray can, degreased everything and used 2K Bison metal glue to glue the strips to the bearing shells! Let it dry with a tie-wrap around it, and later use the same glue to fit it in the tube! There is not a lot of force in the steering-only part of the system. The front-wheel tube that actually carries the weight could never be fixed likt this :-) Hope this helps you out!

@giovannipacitto4532 3 года назад
Hi, nice job..one question, why the height is 8 cm? Does it depends on the seat tube angle? Could you explain that?
@zoltan9
@zoltan9 3 года назад
This is the difference between the height of the axles, because you use 20 and 26 inch wheels! Because I put the front axle on 0 height (underside of main beam), rear axle has to rise 8cm!
@giovannipacitto4532
@giovannipacitto4532 3 года назад
@@zoltan9 so you have assumed to keep the original set up of your donor bike. In reference to the seat tube
@zoltan9
@zoltan9 3 года назад
@@giovannipacitto4532 not sure what you mean now. The donor 26" bike has a horizontal top tube. I made the bike so that the new main beam and the top tube are horizontal again. So yes donor bike is placed in its original position, is this what you asked? :-)
