Gary, Shimano 8 and 9 speed have different cog spacing on the cassettes (Sunrace uses the same spacing.) 8 speed is 4.8mm between the centres of the cogs and 9 speed is 4.34mm. This is why your 9 speed shifter is not pulling enough cable to go though your larger cogs and you have to double click. From the smallest cog, your pull error increases until the point at the two largest cogs you need to shift twice. You may find that if you set the shifting pull from either the 4th or 5th cog that you get a smaller pull error eg only 3 or 4 changes up or down, rather than 7 up from cog 1 which might allow all 8 cogs to shift on one lever push.
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 6 месяцев назад
Ahhh yes thanks for explaining I got confused with the pull ratio vs cable pull numbers ! I will probably switch to an 8 speed shifter or friction in the future thank you !

hey, you need to flip the brake pads around in the front since whole brake is backwards. These pads are directional and made form 2 parts, metal outer and brake shoe inner and it might just shoot out at some point since its how they are replaced. Stay safe and thank you for a video

Nice video, but I do have a couple of notes for you as a "frugal" bike mechanic. For the quick link removal you can just take those pliers and do it without the wire. I do this all the time. Open the jaws, and rest them on opposite sides of the link away from where the open part is and at an angle so that when you close the pliers they push on the opposite sides and open the quick link. If you have a pair of channel lock pliers that open wider this works better of course, but still can be done with regular ones. Thin needle nose pliers are also an option. As for getting grips on and off easier I use a little rubbing alcohol. This works very well for sliding on, and drying fast. To give a bit more "grip" use hair spray instead to install them. For the front brakes if you are considering carrying heavy stuff I'd really recommend going to disk. Especially if you ride in the rain as I sometimes have to do.

I made headset tool on basically the same principle. Its lasted years, the way to increase strength is actually to make more and shorter slots and drill a hole at the end of them. Square corners are force multipliers and will start a crack on their own so drill, and wide tabs will crease more easily across the arc of the tube diameter, then you need shorter tabs to keep them proportional given the narrower width. You can also use a thicker walled tube if you chamfer the inside diameter before cutting the slots, this gives the tabs a definite outside corner thats necessary because of the thicker tube wall

Nice vid Gary, welcome to the cycletruck gang! While cable pull ratio for 6-9s Shimano RD's is the same, you'll want to run your 8s cassette with a 8s shifter I reckon. It will work alright overall, but with a 9s shifter it will likely always be a bit off in some of the gear changes. Obv an easy fix :)

I use a cane creek 40 on my castellano fango, 10/10 headset for the price. I actually don’t use a headset press, I’ve found a large dead blow hammer actually works really well. I tried using a press but it was honestly kinda slow in comparison as opposed to just smacking it with a hammer. I do use one of those cheap Chinese headset removal tools, it’s it’s fine, I recommend any of the cheap ones tbh. I feel like for people who do this every day you’d want the nice tools.
