This Carhartt Tool Roll is solidly built, and durable. But for what? Why? What am I missing. I cannot get a tool roll to work for me. Help me solve this problem. What do you use a tool roll for? How do you keep the tools from falling out? So many questions.

Here's some help: use the handle when carrying the roll when its rolled. Cinch it down after its rolled. Store the tools handle or thick side in the pockets. Select tools that will work both for their use and how they will be stored. I use a bucket boss which is almost identical. Have never dropped a tool from it.

I use it for knife storage when I go on trips. Super knife nut so I like to switch often 😂. Folding knives are small and I’ve never had any fall out - especially if use the clip over the seam

I'm using it as a knife roll. I keep it in my bag and travel with it. If you tighten the straps well and don't purposefully shake it trying to get the tools to fall out it works great. As a knife wrap its a little short but if you can use a 10" knife as your main chefs knife you're golden. Also much better construction and quality that actual knife wraps of the same size. 10/10.

Simple solution. Add a flap on each side 2"- 3" wide the length of the roll. Canvas, denim, or thin leather would do. Write to Carhart with the suggestion and tell them you would review a sample on your channel, thus giving them good exposure.

I have a Dickies branded tool roll I bought off amazon. It has end flaps to contain the problem you are addressing. I like them so much I bought two more. One for my airplane and one for my Ebike, which I carry in my airplane. I like tool rolls much better for my use, especially in my vibrating motorcycle saddlebag. Tool bags for me end up being disorganized and what I'm looking for is always at the bottom.

Tool rolls - great for sets of similar-shaped slim tools such as wrenches, punches or chisels, not so great for mixed sizes and shapes.

I tried a handful of combination wrenches, and they fell out faster than the pliers. All this needs is a flap to retain the tools. Might need to install one myself.

@@lastbesttool Yeah, a flap over the tools to hold them in is pretty essential, which is probably a fundamental problem with tool rolls which have pockets on either side.

Tool rolls have been around for hundreds of years so I think some people with a more mechanical/problem solving mindset have found it's usefulness. They probably didn't mindlessly dump tools into them and then pout about it not automatically working perfectly. I've had wrench rolls, car specific tool rolls, tool specific rolls, and they have their place, but I don't expect them to work in every occasion. The added benefit is that for the car, the tools aren't banging and rattling around. Perfect for under the seat.

I have numerous rolls for knives, chisels, and carving tools. I don't use them for wrenches which a lot of them are marketed for. But for my use, all similar sized tools and I can roll them out when using them to select from the various sizes. I agree that how you use tools probably isn't right for a roll.

Found rolls to be suitable for small sets of tools to be stowed away in a bike or car etc for a rare occasion, when you would not mind "opening up the kimono" and laying it all out. However a tool roll without a flap to hold the tools in is just utterly baffling.

If this tool roll had elasticated loops running along the middle which you put the tool under while the other end of the tool sits inside the pouches that would really help to prevent the tools from falling out.

Just bought my first tool roll waiting for it to arrive. Plan on using it for storing tools in house when I need them and not having to dig them out of tool box in garage. Should be much lighter than my tool bag. Weight and convenience big plus for disabled. Now I know where tools will be and no more lost pliers in house or trying to find screwdriver in junk drawer because my kids didnt put it back. Also a good excuse to upgrade old worn out tools !

I was a year-round bike commuter for about 10 years. I found a smaller tool roll was great for holding all of the essentials: air pump, adjustable wrenches, allen key multi-tool, cone wrenches, tire levers, patch kit. Keeping these items in a tool roll was nice because I could just grab the roll no matter what bag I was riding with (backpack/panniers/ fanny pack/etc.). I think tool rolls are nice for keeping small tool kits together where portability is key. For example having a tool roll for camping, skiing/snowboarding, or music equipment (if you're a gigging musician). I don't think tool rolls are very practical for more general tool storage.
@lastbesttool
@lastbesttool 2 года назад
I found that for my bike tools while riding, I store them according probability of use and job specific. My tire repair tools stay with my tube/CO2/pump. My intricate adjustment tools (tiny hexes/drivers/disk brake, etc. stored away where they won't get lost during a hurried roadside repair. I usually have a faster mini tool with essential hexes easily accessible and not under or behind anything since it is accessed regularly. I find a lot to tools on the trails so I know others are not following my wisdom.A loop around Slickrock in Moab usually yields a few tire irons, some hexes, and a chain breaker or two. And some used first aid stuff and full sunscreen bottles as well.

I have a BucketBoss one which has zippered compartments that works great for all my hand tools. I fly with a Pelican case full of tools and it makes keeping all my wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, and pliers together nice because it rolls up compact and it pads them too while they're being thrown around the airport. I'd like to get an Atlas46 one of this one ever craps out. But, for $36 it's been pretty good to me.

I find a zipped pouch more useful for the same purpose. As a basic breakdown toolkit for my wife’s (small) car I used a Milwaukee M12 pouch someone gave me. Even has a few Velcro straps inside to keep stuff in place and tools are pretty much crammed in, though easily accessible as it’s fairly shallow. Also has get you home kit such as duct tape, zip ties, electrical connectors, wire etc. Best bit is it fits under the drivers seat so it’s not kicking around the trunk/boot.

yea i noticed early that the tools tend to fall out. I use it for my wrenches now. It's been working fine since it just lives in a drawer in my truck. I think the only thing that would make it usable as a mobile solution would be to sew caps on the ends.

I do mobile mechanic work and I have all my tool in a full sized tool box where my back seat used to be in my crew cab pickup. I do this because you can never seal a service truck tool box - hated my tools getting rusty. I use tool rolls for almost everything. I use the Dickie,s version. They have an extra flap that covers the exposed end of the tool. Keeps them from falling out and for me no rattles. I fold them more then rolling so they fit in the drawers. Also I keep a can of spray gun oil and give them a spray every now and them right in the roll. Keeps everything clean and rust free.
@3vil3lvis

The major design flaw is the lack of a flap to hold the tools in. Perhaps if you put short tools (like folding pocket knives, flatware, sds drill bits, punches or dies) in you could fold it down the middle before you roll it up and that might prevent the tools from falling out. Alternately, you could sew a piece of material in the middle to hold the tools in .

I like tool rolls in concept but in practice they're just too slow. I like the idea that it keeps things organized while efficiently using space, but compared to regular tool bags, pouches, foam cutouts, etc it's just super slow to wrap and unwrap the roll every time I need something. My speed wrenches came in a nice tool roll, I always lose any time they save just by unwrapping the thing. I feel like they were close to solving the problem you bring up with this carhart. If you could use it for small tools, fold it in half, and then roll it, nothing would fall out.

Find them useful for some basic tools left in a vehicle or on a machine to be able to fix small things as they happen. The roll helps keep them tight together and not wasting space or, most importantly, rattling. Never seen them as ideal for every day use. Perhaps a spanner roll at a push but even then I find it annoying.

I like Carhartt products, too, but this is a poor design. I have two tool rolls. Both for punches. I have so many punches and drifts that sometimes it takes a minute to find the right one. A tool roll for transfer punches, original packaging, that seldom use. And a small Wiha roll for commonly needed punches that I can take to whatever I'm working on. Not having a shop crane, it's easier. Otherwise, I prefer a pouch for travel and the like.
