Ok start with the Atlas 46 Yorktown Mechanics Tool Roll, but make it out of chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) synthetic rubber aka Hypalon. On the outside near the handle Hook and loop field(so that you can put ID patches on it), laser cut molle field so you can add an extra pouch, 3 pockets with long flat magnet bars act as a portable parts tray (so they roll up), and finally add a Veto Pro Pac Tech MCT type tape measure holder.

Lol you've been waiting anxiously for this one! I truly hope some of the great ideas here in the comments come true, because I love a good tool roll, I'm a bit nostalgic over them, but I could never find any good use for one. Not even my dad's old SK wrenches that came in a roll.

OK, I'd put a cover flap over the pockets on each side, with a slight overlap in the middle, to prevent tools falling out of the sides, and swap those small velcro pouches for a single full length pouch with zipper closure, which would be great for holding a socket rail. Tool roll design is tricky - I have a Snap-On Industrial roll about this size which I picked up at a bargain price. It's beautifully made and it looks great, but I've never found a use for it.

I would definitely need elastic to strap the tools in, and either a flap on one side or an entire zipped enclosure to make sure nothing falls out. Also, I would say either skip the extra storage or make it a zipped, contained area.

I custom made a canvas tool roll with grommets in the top 2 corners and attached rawhide and hooks. I can now hang the roll on the machines I work on. So, grommets in the corners is an easy add-on that shouldn't add much to the cost. Who wants to roll out your tools on the floor or ground? We don't always have a clean place for that....

A common feature of tools roll is to have a couple of elasticated strips with loops along the middle that the tools will go under (along with sitting in the current pockets) - these elasticated strips will hold the tools tightly in place. Maybe another even better alternative would be too have an elasticated loop for each pocked that can be sinched to different tightnesses to fir tightly around the size of the tool that one has put into that pocket.

So you could make the 3 small pouches, 1 large one with velcro spanning the whole length. Then just sew in some dividers to get 3 compartments. Also you could add small loops to the outside of the tool roll to where the excess strap-age can go.

1 made in 🇺🇸!!! 2 Definitely sealed storage pockets. 3 stuff can't fall out. U grab this roll outta your truck and loose half the stuff you'll never use it again. 3 have 2 or 3 full length slots. U can put multiple wrenches etc in 1 slot.

Hi Doc, hope you are well. I'd have two overlapping flaps which could have narrow pockets for needle files, hex bit extension, etc., a 'D' ring on each end of the handle for a shoulder bag strap or carabiner and a long zippered pocket instead of small ones. I don't do velcro. That would do it for me. Looking forward to seeing the new design. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Here in England, the "standard" method of carrying tools, is a builders bucket,,!! It doubles up for mixing concrete, / plaster, etc, and you can turn it over and stand on it, for an extra foot of reach,, 🤣,, it's a sure sign of the professional craftsman, when he turns up at your home, with all his tools, in a bucket,,, 😂🤣 (sorry, sarcasm is my middle name),, 😀,,

My "go bag" for doing maintenance at our business is a bucket with one of the around-the-rim organizers. Only you can't use it as a ladder. Upside down does not bode well for gravity stored contents.

Re the pouches, I reckon keep the middle one the same size for storing a multi tool like a leather man or the likes and have two paired smaller pockets either side of that. The more options the better with these things and yes, more zip pouches. Again handy for things like the Leatherman bit kit, bandaids, small packets of washers or nuts and bolts etc. Versatility is key! Thanks for the video.

Older tool rolls also used to have a flap at the top and bottom. Fold the flaps up so they cover the tools, and when you roll it up nothing can fall out. It just needs two pieces of cloth.
@TheZiolableu

First replace plastic buckles with carhartt metal buckles they have on other products. Next add a top/bottom flap to keep items secure when the roll is closed. Also adding length to the straps as a way to strap something else to the exterior of the roll would come in handy & if not needed then take up the slack in the straps wrapping around the roll twice for added tension on roll. Lastly ditch the 3 small pockets & make one pocket all the way across with a zipper to accommodate multiple size sockets, zip ties, multi tools, batteries etc.

I use mine for electric hand tool storage. I love the three pouches as they hold my wago clamps perfectly sorted according to their size. As you said the handle is the only outside Place to hold things, which I don't mind, as it holds my Wera Toolcheck plus perfectly in place. as others said maybe addietional velcro spots on the outside would be nice. my biggest gripe with mine is that the very first tool pocket seems to squeeze the first screwdriver out while it's rolled up, which could be fixed with a little ledge on the end. Also in my perosnal opinion it could be a little stiffer so it can hang on a ledge a bit better.

Replace the three small Pouches with one long one, soft side Velcro the outside of the long pouch and hard side the Flap that closes. Add a full Flap, could items still slip out, sure but would be less likely and possible to avoid depending on how you organize it.

I own and regularly use this tool roll. Bought the grey one, but I like the khaki look too. It has held up perfectly under some less than ideal conditions. There are more things I like than dislike about it. Slot placement is subjective and specific to the user, so I think that's ok with me as is. Straps and handle are adequate. Thing's I'd like to see: Flaps of at least 8 inches from handle side of roll. The only tools that have slid out on me are only on the last part on handle side. Keep the three pouches, but make lids for each pouch separate and with a secure closure. Doesn't need to be perfect, but be nice to keep some small hardware more securely. Also, a cordura liner in pockets would be nice. And finally, please manufacture in in USA. I know with these changes it won't be $20 any more, but I also know I'd be willing to spend a bit more on a new one with some improvements especially if it was made here.

I think a game changing innovation in tool roll tech would be adjustable pocket sizes. ie cord threaded through toggle cord locks so it can be sinched around the specific tool width or making the whole pocket hook & loop so it can effectively be molding around each tool

Definitely needs a magnet patch for when you are working on something out and about in the field, that way you don't lose bolts, nuts, washers, etc. Also the small pockets should be zippered so you can put something of any size in there and it won't fall out.

For long tools that might fall out I put a red mechanics rag over the top so it drapes over from one side to the other. I then roll up the tool roll so the rag keeps the tool inside of the tool roll. Besides I always need a rag under the hood.

I like the idea of elastic in the middle so aa to hold down tools in the middle. I would also like to see nicer buckles ans webbing. Those would add to the longevity of the roll. A D-Ring near the handle for leather for tools would be nice. I have a carhartt one that i keep under the hood of my truck and it suits me, but could always be better.

Add 1 or 2 wide, segmented elastic bands that run left to right over area where the protruding tools stick out of those slots. It would hold the tools in place, and would not be an expensive addition.

I bought 2 of these and put an array of tools in them from pliers to punch and chisels. When you roll it up and tighten the 2 straps everything stays together and nothing falls out, I’ve tried to shake em out and no luck, just tighten both straps nice and tight🧐🧐🧐. iMO

id like to see a line of elastic nylon loops go across the center to better secure tools from falling out. maybe an extra amount of canvas at the bottom of all the pockets to keep sharper objects from punching through. snaps instead of velcro.
@exploreseafaring
@exploreseafaring 2 года назад
Instead of the three pockets, perhaps an area of MOLLE webbing stuff to allow you to secure something of use there. Same applies for the outside of the roll. It would just add a bit more usability for some people.

If you’re not going to have a built in socket holder, make a removable one (w/ 1/4 and 3/8” clips) and a long pocket to hold it. Small sockets are a pain to differentiate with the multiple little pocket design. I prefer the small strap clips to the larger since the webbing adjusts easier but, believe it or not, I prefer a slightly elastic loop with a cord lock best of all. It saves fumbling around with two hands to clip it closed and adjusts with just a tug. You roll up the bag, lift it with one hand, slide the loop over it and give it a tug. Second all the comments on elastic loops down the middle.

@BL-yj2wp
@BL-yj2wp 2 года назад
@@lastbesttool Pockets on both sides obviously do not work since tools aren’t retained and can fall out the side of the roll. There are two common ways to solve this. Either pockets on one and a flap on the other, or elastic loops in the middle and flaps on both sides of the roll (or different variations/combinations of those). The easiest way to fix Carhartts design would be to add flaps on both sides of the roll. The pouches would work better with a zipper as you pointed out - that’s really the only way to fix those that I can see. This Carharrt tool roll currently costs 42€ where I live, making it one of the more expensive and less functional designs out there if I look at the competition just on Amazon. Some companies like Gedore offer similarly flawed designs, but many competitors just do the the old fashioned one side pockets with flap. I guess that still works well.

Why not put a really strong and very flat Neodymium Magnet in the bottom of every pocket/sleeve? Might stop tools faling out.
@BL-yj2wp
@BL-yj2wp 2 года назад
That seems rather expensive, you‘d need a lot of magnets. And the magnets would stick together when rolled up. And they would be inflexible. And heavy. And not all tools might be magnetic or reach all the way down.

This is one of the worst tool rolls I have seen. It looks like a 5 to 10 $ barging roll. But likely cost 30+$ because of the name attached to it. 1st all tool roles worth considering can be hung up typically with 1/2 grommets on the corners. 2nd when fully opened all the tools pockets are aligned in the same direction. Primarily so nothing falls out when it is hung up. 3rd a flap ( often with a second or third row of storage fold over the tools so when ot is rolled up no tools can fall out. 4th not required but elastic strapping about 2 inches above the pocket line is nice for holding screwdrivers in place while keeping the handle accessible. They are also nice for holding small items that have clips. 5th my preference is two pockets one for a multimeter, one for LOTO accessories. Envelope style sides with a 2 inch thickness. Elastic hook catch to close. 6th a strap that is adjustable in length, with durable plastic clips (non conducting). It should also double for acting as a hanger for the grommets and as a place to hold rolls of tape. 7th all roll materials should be made from petroleum resistant materials, that can be pressure washed, and have a higher wear and cut resistance. Old style Carhart heavy duck canvas is a good base material. Their newer light weight material is not good enough. I used to get mine made from used oil skin jackets.

So other than the obvious that the tools fall out. The pockets aren't at an angle. They are all the same depth. Smaller tools get lost and end up being a bitch to retrieve. Jon Crane made a really nice tool roll. Just search "right on with Jon crane tool roll" I like his use of durable materials. I hate to say it but it looks like Carhart put absolutely no effort into this thing. I'm glad you're not using it as much for a backdrop. The design is aggravating to look at. And for God's sake Carhart get rid of the plastic buckles. Even the really cheep tool rolls I have use metal.
