The programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office in Havana, has partnered with Mad’in Europe, to provide Caribbean young jewellery designers and ceramists with a tailor-made artistic exchange-training-exhibition opportunity for the first time in Italy, specifically in Caltagirone, one of the eight historic centres declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (South-Eastern Sicily).
As a result of a Call launched in July 2024 and addressed to young (18-35 years) Caribbean jewellery designers and ceramists from any of the 17 countries covered by the Transcultura programme (Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago), the following 9 artists were finally selected, representing 5 different countries:
1. Ms Dyhemmia Matasha Williams (Jamaica)
2. Mr Johan Narciso Encarnacion Cruz (Dominican Republic)
3. Mr Luis Enrique Milán Boza (Cuba)
4. Ms Jandelys Jimenez Rosario (Dominican Republic)
5. Ms Lysis Emilie Rebull Chiang (Cuba)
6. Ms Kaori Sone (Dominican Republic)
7. Ms Yanaiza López Valdes (Cuba)
8. Ms Lenecia Patricia Johnson (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)
9. Ms Landee Demi Longsworth (Belize)
Thanks to this joint initiative, the participants will have the groundbreaking opportunity of leveraging a highly specialised and intensive training programme, aimed at teaching them the Murano, blowtorch, ceramic molding/painting and other techniques, which will enhance their portfolios´ competitiveness within the Caribbean cultural market. The following experienced craftspeople will share their expertise and skills with the participants :
1. Francesca Bortolaso - Master in glass techniques in Santa Maria del Focallo
2. Salvatore Gurreri - Master ceramist in Caltagirone
3. Desirée Delfino - Master ceramist in Caltagirone
In addition, an “International - Caribbean Creative Jewellery and Ceramic Exhibition” will showcase, for the first time ever in Sicily, both previous creations by the Caribbean jewelry designers and ceramists, and artwork they will have produced as a result of onsite training workshops on Glass making; Ceramic molding and Ceramic painting, delivered by the renowned European artists and experts involved in the initiative.
The UNESCO Transcultura programme will cover the participants´ international mobility, food and accommodation costs in Caltagirone, Italy, during the residency period.
The Municipality of Caltagirone has given invaluable support to the initiative helping in all steps of the organization and planning an event, in their historic building, where local authorities will be introduced to the initiative and invited to visit the exhibition.
