caring for alocasias and how I (finally) got out of the one leaf club + repot and corm propagation

I did not intend for this to be an almost 2 hour long video but I felt like I had a lot of ground to cover and wanted it to be as comprehensive as possible! DISCLAIMER: I am not an alocasia expert nor do I even consider myself "good" at growing alocasias, but I feel confident that I know enough to at least help out fellow beginners with common alocasia issues, or even help someone feel a little less hesitant to get their first alocasia. This is by no means intended to be a be-all end-all "alocasia care video"-- it's simply based on my own experience and what works for me.
In this video I'll show you guys my entire alocasia collection, preferred growing substrate, watering, when to know the right time to repot, spider mites, environmental conditions, how to propagate from corm, and ultimately how to grow them in a way that's actually enjoyable without being in the one leaf club. 😤
Feel free to drop your questions for anything I didn't cover!

Awesome! This is literally the video I've been waiting for someone to make for YEARS! None of that entry-level "give your alocasia bright indirect sunlight and keep the soil moist and it'll do great" nonsense. Also, your channel totally inspired me to start hunting for an alocasia scalprum and I finally found one at a local shop last week! It's the first time I've ever seen it at a plant shop here in the states. I hope it starts to become more common here because it's **chef's kiss**.

This is the MOST useful video I’ve found on Alocasia care on RU-vid. I have 3 Alocasias only and have refused to buy anymore until I watched your video because they have been such difficult divas for me. Dropping leaves, droopy leaves, not growing perfect leaves, and I had just about given up until I watched your video. I’ve learned so much new information about their care. Thank You 🙏🏼 I might be brave enough now to get a variegated frydek after watching your video.

I just got a stingray alocasia and the more I read the more nervous I got. A friend gave it to me and I didn’t want to kill it. I feel a little bit more confident after watching you thank you so much.
@amandaamanda5398
@amandaamanda5398 3 месяца назад
Don't worry. Stingray is incredibly resilient among all alocasias. Just wait for the substrate to almost dry out before watering, and don't let it completely dry out. Also, very importantly, fertilize alocasias heavily. I add 5 times more than guidance slow-release fertilizer into the substrate, and then water with diluted liquid fertilizer every time. So my alocasias all hold on to many, many leaves.

Thanks for all the info and tips. This is a great help. I'm a new Alocasia owner of a baby Silver Dragon Scale with two leaves and one pushing out. It arrived with a very healthy root system in a sphagnum moss plug witch I had a time getting free from all the fine roots before placing into my soil media. So far in the two days it's been in it's new soil media the baby is doing very well and standing upright and seems very perky. So I'm researching all I can learn about them, so I keep it healthy and happy. 👍

My alocasia micholitziana has 7 leaves and one more on the way. Once it was acclimated to my environment and happy, it’s growing profusely! It even lives in below 40% in the winter and only dropped maybe 1 or 2 leaves! All of my Alocasia live in soil though, my aroid mix- I just have to water them a lot more. Lol I love Alocasia sooo much. Light from the top is critical, not too too bright either or they start flopping. Lol dealing with my cuprea and that right now. Alwaysss gotta cut those flowers lol they usually come in 2’s. I’ve noticed if they push out more than 2 then they are stressed to some degree. They are probably one of my top 3 genus of plants! Thanks for sharing all your experience and understanding of them.

I'd love to see some updates on these later. I gave away two alocasias because I hated the way they would toss off a leaf as soon as they got a new one. I have a black velvet now that a friend of mine gave me and I'm trying again. It's currently in soil in a wicking pot with a consistent water reservoir and seems to be doing well. But it's getting a new leaf and I see one of the older ones turning red. So it's gonna toss it.

We use predatory mites on a very large scale in our glasshouse in Australia. We found they are a good option for controlling an active infestation, but once they have the infestation under control and there are no more "bad" mites to eat they will turn on each other and wipe out their own population. So good option for an active infestation but not really an option as a preventative measure.
@unplantparenthood
@unplantparenthood 2 года назад
Hi!! Thank you for your comment! Do you also top up on the bran (?) that comes with the mites? When I spoke to the predatory kite company, they said I could keep adding it around my plants so they have a constant food source if there are no pests to eat. I actually used to keep mites regularly even without any pests, but I stopped doing it because I found that for some reason ALL of my plants were pushing out an excess of EFN- even plants that normally wouldn’t do that. And then I had a lot of those spots that would burn through the leaves when I couldn’t clean it off in time. I’m currently looking for a miticide that can be taken up via the roots, but no luck finding anything available in Canada yet 😕

while watching this video i found out my monstera adansonii has spider mites lol found some webbing. first pest on my first house plant 🫠 update: was listening to this video while taking care of her. the leaves are so hard to be gentle when wiping because of the holes and she’s a beast…. she’s in a 8inch pot with many vines hanging out and bushy LOL took me an house to give it a shower, wipe the leaves, and spray both sides of the leaves and stems with neem oil mixture. she’s been with me for months now and started having issues just now so idk how she got them…

Hey, where do you get those plastic (?) jars / pots / vessels from (these round one where you put your Scalprum in for example) Couldn't find them anywhere but they are so pretty for plants!

This is soooo good! Thank you for this in-depth care video. I really appreciate the detail you go into here. I struggled with alocasia for a while, but this year I’ve started to feel more confident with them (even though I grow in soil 😉) I picked up a few tips that I want to try out, thank you.

This was wonderful! I’ve been really busy at work and have been missing my mid-week plant time. This was able to play while I was doing house stuff after work and made me feel like I was “working” in my plant room. Love your channel!

I tend to agrer with the no drainage. Atleast on my alocasia anyway. Mine hated soil...and hated leca. Right now its just in water and nutrients and working on a 3rd leaf. After she pushes that out, i may try PON

I definitely struggle with Alocasia aswell. I came across the Alocasia Dragon Scale for €9 in IKEA which was a great price so i took the plunge to give it ago. Since haven’t it has given me two leaves. Also lost two smaller leaves they just turned yellow. I definitely notice when needs watering there leaves kinda flops down. And if you don’t water it properly you can get the yellow tips or edges. Also people have experience when they get new leaves they can also lost leaves too. I have been thinking getting the Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret which looks like an Alien plant with that metallic leave. Do you know what is the difference between that one and the Azlanii? The Alocasia Sinuata looks gorgeous the leave texture and colour maybe even more nicer than the Dragon Scale. I also want the Alocasia Scalprum after seeing yours not an easy find yet here. The Alocasia Frydek Variegated Albo White has lovely variegations but worry about the variegations staying and the white parts staying pristine. As my Philodendron White Princess the white parts don’t stay pristine it can get discoloured which is stopping me buying another variegated green and white leaves types of plant. Only Hoya plants would not so they are safer. Seeing you use a toothbrush to clean the leaves couldn’t help my heart pounding in case the leaves would ripped. I tend to use a soft cloth instead with lemon dish water soap and water as pests don’t like lemon scent. I heard removing all the corns in the Alocasia is not good as they need some in the plant to provide growth and nutrients for the plant to grow and stay alive.

I feel like we’re twinsies, I hate bugs and I’m hoping that being a plant mom will help me overcome my fear (I’m a new plant mom). I need to place a moss pole into my new monstera and I’m TERRIFIED because I was changing the top layer of soil when I first got it and a crab spider crawled up the stem and I blink and it was GONE. So now I’m scared to even go near it and it’s time to water too so I’m like 😭😭😭😭 ALSO I got a variegated alocasia frydek and it’s a baby. It came in soil though, would you recommend repotting her into pon?? Or should I wait? I keeps seeing mixed reviews about switching her right away :(

I have a baby frydek (two leaves highly variegrated) and so little and adorable I'm scared I'll kill it before I can even get it to a medium size. It's still in the little black pebbles. I am too scared to even touch it
