Caring for Bummer lambs (or bottle lambs), is a bit more work than I ever thought before...
Ideally, I wouldn't have any... but with a prolific flock, unfortunately, I have to pull some lambs off as mom can't support much more than 2 lambs at a time. I have left a few triplets in the pen with mom, but have had to keep a close eye on them to ensure they haven't gone backwards.
As for the bummer lambs on the milk machine... I've learned a few things.
1. training is easier with more than one lamb
2. they train each other
3. they have to be hungry to get on to machine faster
4. machine needs cleaned at least every other day
5. they need an 'insurance' dosage of clostridial vaccine as they don't get much immunity from mom
I also started the older lambs on creep feed... a prepared pellet (18% protein).
Still no lambs... but they look close!!
HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVE EVE!!
