2023 has been my first year gardening, so I appreciate your videos so much! I need all the help I can get! I saw a comment here that someone had found some bad advice and that's been my problem too. I find so much conflicting advice on how to grow, not just Crocuses, but lots of plants! Your videos and a few other RU-vid gardeners I've subscribed to are helping me weed out the bad advice...no pun intended. I've watched a few of your videos and am subscribing. I will need your channel throughout all of the seasons so I can avoid killing everything that I plant...haha! Thank you :)

@SpokenGarden Thank you! I do have a topic maybe. I think I mentioned a weird thing going on with my Celosias in the comments of another video of yours. Have you ever had Celosias look weird? 2 or 3 of mine either got some alien disease or the soil isn't providing proper nutrients. Their leaves are very stiff and pointing straight up. Not like happy leaves do...like someone is pointing a gun at them and their hands are fully straight up in the air. Also, the leaves developed a strange iridescent coloring...kind of spotty, but not like any leaf disease I've found in my research. The coloring looks kind of cool, but the plants do not look happy. I separated them from my healthy plants just in case. If you know what's going on, I'd love a video about it so I can prevent it from happening in the future. I planted 20 in containers in Jan. (8b PNW) & hope they bloom! I was hoping to find out when I can plant them in the ground for Spring ‘24. I’ll keep looking. 😊
I'm in zone 8a and am hoping my bulbs grow! It was getting colder here, so I went ahead and planted my Hyacinth and Daffodil bulbs, Then we got a wave of much warmer weather. It's so hard to guage the right time to plant them when our weather is all crazy with variable temperatures! Because of this, I've been holding out on planting my Crocus and Tulip bulbs. Your comment is from 9 months ago. Do you have an update? Did you get blooms?
I love the video, but I have sooooo many questions that I just cannot find videos for, maybe you just know and could answer in the reply: 1. Can/when can you divide crocus? 2. How do you divide crocus? 3. I have fall blooming saffron crocus, would their schedule be different? 4. I bought a mixed package and threw them on the ground thinking this would naturally mix the colors, lol well I have all yellows on one side of my tree and majority purple on the other side, when is the best time to transplant them around? If you have answers to ANY of these questions, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
Hi @ellencox8415 ! 👋👋 Thank you for watching our video and all great questions. We have been wanting to make a video specifically about all this, too. So, here are our answers to your questions: 1. You can divide crocus during two different times of year. In the late winter, early spring (depending if you have a mild or hard winter and how long it lasts that year) once they are completely finished flowering and have withered to the ground. Also, you can divide crocus in the fall if you are transplanting or thinning them. This is cause it's a normal time to plant new crocus anyway and they are still dormant during this time. It's easier to divide in the late winter or early spring because you can still see where they are planted from their withered leaves. 2. You can divide crocus similarly to how you would divide daffodils or tulips, but crocus are corm type of bulb, so their baby-bulbs or "cormlets" will be located underneath on the bottom or lower sides of the mother-bulbs. You can gently push these small bulbs off the bottom, but it might be better to let them grow for another year until you separate them. We'll make a video about this soon. 👍 3. Yes, Saffron Crocus are treated differently than regular crocus. 4. Transplant regular crocus in the late-winter or early spring OR in the fall. Transplant Saffron Crocus in the late-summer or early fall. Hope this all helps and keep those questions coming, if and when needed. Have fun gardening!

My question is my crocus were in the bulb bag and had no light and still flowered should I plant them and see if they’ll go through their cycle what are your recommendations?
This is my first year of Krokus, coming up beautifully. If I planted lets say 40 bulbs, what can I expect in future years, will they split and fill in like Bearded Iris? Do they come back same exact color in same position every year, or can they change color. I planted mine very symmetrical in a triangle, and think would have looked better more random.
Hi mgondek! 👋 Thank you for watching and you great questions! If your crocus are hardy in your area, your soil drains fairly well, get enough sun,, and you keep them watered and hydrated through their growing and flower cycles, they should be healthy and multiply from year to year. Some reproduce better than others just in general, but you never really know until you get them in the ground and see what they can do. 😃 Symmetrical plantings can add a lot of order and specific lines to your landscape and is great! Thank you for the video - would this apply for tulips also, or is best to take the bulbs out the ground when leaves have yellowed and store them in a box until next autumn? (London weather 😊)
Hi Cristina! 👋 Sorry for our late reply to you. Yes, the care we describe in this video is for general crocus care, but can also be applied to tulips. For removing your tulips to store over the winter, it depends on your local climate and how low your coldest temps get there in London. Tulips, generally, are rated to be hard down to -12 to -18 C degrees (11-0 F degrees). So you can keep them in the ground over the winter if your local temperatures don't get below these. Now, you can put mulch (wood chips or compost) over your bulbs to help insulate them during the winter. Last late summer, I ordered saffron crocus. Planted in pots and put in a sunny window. They grew, bloomed, and were able to harvest some saffron. However, my plant did not die back so come mid-winter (Maine), I removed them from the window and put them inside a box for a few weeks. They still didn't die back, so put them inside a cooler and in my garage since mid-December. The other day, I opened the cooler hoping to see the tops died back, but they didn't. Now what? Should I trim?
I've just pulled out my crocus' from the ground, 6 weeks after they had stopped flowering. I've left the foliage on. Have I don't it too early? Not all the foliage had withered away. What next? Thanks
Hi Julie! 👋 Great question! Yes, you can plant right now. Whether you bought them from an nursery or big box-store or are a gift from someone, if they are already growing or were forced to flower, you can still plant them. Just be aware that any planting while they are actively growing and/or flowering will create some stress to them where they might respond with shorter bloom time or have a shorter growing duration than usual. As long as they can go through their flowering cycle and die back naturally, you should see them next year. If you are planting bulbs with no growth yet, this is ok too. Just know that you might see them grow some and not flower or not grow at all until next late winter/early spring. This might fit your situation, but if not, let us know and we can further help. I'm growing crocus in Indonesia(tropic). So i grow them in refrigerator. I will take them out after i see the flower bud. So i wanna ask, what should i do after the crocus done flowering and no more leaves left? I grow them with water, so no soil at all. I put stone n water in jar and place the crocus on it. Last time, i grew hyacinth. And after flowering and die, i dont what to do with the left bulb. Thank you before.
Hi Ivy! 👋 Wow, this is SUPER interesting and fun to hear you are growing bulbs hydroponically. We haven't heard of this being done before, so REALLY cool! 👍😲 Since we haven't attempted this before, it's hard to know how to answer your great question. We can suggest that since you are using water as the bulb's growing media (like soil), you could potentially treat the bulbs the same as if you were growing them in soil by removing whithered stems, flower, and leaves (like you would in an outdoor garden), but always pull them out of the water (essentially dig them up out of their "soil"), let them dry off ( which could be done faster than letting air dry so no chance of any rotting would happen), and then store them in a cool and dry dark location until their next growing season (natural or forced). Placing them in cardboard boxes or other containers that can breath and not have moisture build-up would be great AND have shredded newspaper or even sawdust or woodchips to place the bulbs into while in storage (cool and dark place, but not freezing temperatures either). Again, this is all guest-imation for us since we haven't ever been involved in this before, but really intriguing and fun to even think about. Hi Jeiponda! 👋 Great question and thank you for watching. 😊 For us, crocus grow and come up out of the ground first (from all our other bulbs) in the middle to end of winter (Zone 8b; northern hemisphere), depending on how cold the temperatures was and for how long. Crocus are one of those bulbs that need a cold temperature for a certain length of time before they will then grow and flower. If you planted them this fall (and you can still technically plant them right now before your ground freezes), then you should see them this coming middle to late winter starting to grow. For actual months from planting them to then seeing them grow, it is dependent on your hardiness zone and then your climate (from year to year the cold temperatures reached and length of that temperature can vary). If that's the case then why even bother to cut their leaves when it already withered away...can you jus leave it alone and let nature do it's thing without having to snip off the withered leaves?...just wondering. Thank you.
In my experience you can. Mine grow back every year, I even have to mow them, my neighbors daughter also constantly picks them. My soil is heavy, rocky, water logged clay soil and yet they still return. I moved some of them to a safer part of my yard to let them do their thing. I have boys of my own and they constantly trample everything yet the crocuses grow every year. I guess it would also depend on your growing zone and if you have hardy (like mine) or tropical ones, autumn type or spring type. I have the spring ones that pop up even when the ground is still completely frozen and snow covered. So I'd say nature does it's own thing at least in my yard anyway😊😊🥰🥰
