Carl Martin is still a company, and they actually just revised all of their current pedals and released them last week. They now use normal power supplies

You are supposed to set the boost for a higher volume than unity gain.

I had one. It was terrible, really. No sustain, sharp sound that cuts all low frequencies. It's very huge, heavy, no inputs for the power supply, it connects directly to the grid by a plug. Terrible.
