Maestro Blomstedt is amazing. No theatrics on the podium and just letting the music breathe and speak for itself.

I've come to know -- and love -- Nielsen's Fifth only recently, and this is the performance that introduced me to this great work. Many of Nielsen's works take time, effort, and concentration to understand and appreciate, and the Fifth is indeed a difficult work to take in when one first encounters it. But it is very rewarding indeed! That Maestro Blomstedt has a special regard for Nielsen's Fifth is evident in this wonderful performance. The NDR plays beautifully, with impeccable clarity of sound and with every musician in top form. I've also listened to Maestro Blomstedt's recording with the San Francisco Symphony, which is also excellent. But, to me, this rendition with the NDR is especially moving in an ineffable way. Thank you NDR, thank you Maestro Blomstedt!

After looking at a program about Carl Nielsen, where also Herbert Blomstedt was intervjued, I have begun to listen a lot more to Nielsens music. With Blomstedt as an enthusiastic mentor, himself here at the age of 96, I have begun to understand a bit of Nielsens universas. This Sinfonie nr 5 gives a good entrace to his musical world I believe... And I admire Maesto Blomstedt for his lifelong commitment about classical music. One can hardly believe that he is still conducting. But he is! The 11 juli 2024 he will be 97.

Where Stravinsky ventures deep into the forest, Nielsen assumes the role of wise sage who flies outside watching over the internal chaos that is deep forest.

It's a wonderful, poetic assessment. I've always found that the music of some Scandinavian composers, particularly Nielsen and Sibelius depict primal, elemental, natural forces at work, from the winds singing in stands of tall, ancient pines and stark, mist-shrouded rocky coastlines. Just so beautiful, especially in the hands of a master like Maestro Blomstedt. So happy to find this in my notifications this morning.

The first time I listened to this piece I didn't really like it. But I remembered it because of the snare drum solo, and for some reason decided to listen to it again. The second time I listened to it I was absolutely blown away by it. Now, it is one of my favorite symphonies ever!

I second your comment, as I bought the cycle of Nielsen symphonies years ago, and ignored them until recently. The drums stuck with me, and now it's my favourite - along with the 4th!

@@NDRKlassikThank You! Gosh you guys sound wonderful. But this is in 1996. I was wondering if Herbert found it easier to go batonless as he got older. It's interesting as Otto Klemperer USED one periodically as he got older when he mostly did NOT use one.
