Defensive highlights of the all time great former Middleweight world champion.

Carlos Monzon - Was an Argentine professional boxer who held the undisputed world Middleweight championship for 7 years. He successfully defended his title 14 times against 11 different fighters and is widely regarded as not only one of the best Middleweights in history but also one of the greatest boxers of all time pound-for-pound. Known for his speed, punching power and relentless work rate, Monzon ended his career with a record of 87-3-9-1 with 59 knockouts; all of his losses were early in his career and were avenged. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, he was chosen by The Ring magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years and voted him as the best middleweight title holder of the last 50 years in 2011. As of January 2018, Monzón holds the 2nd longest unified championship reign in middleweight history at 9 consecutive defenses. Argentinians adored Monzón throughout his career. His glamorous and violent life was avidly followed both by the media and Argentine people. He was however accused many times of domestic violence by his two wives and many mistresses and of beating paparazzi.

One of the greatest fighters of all time! The most underrated aspect of Monzon's skill set was his defense, he could make punches miss by a matter of inches and come back with huge counters. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

I noticed he stands on the center line even after punching but is able to evade by leaning back because of his height, Foreman used to do this at heavyweight sometimes also, thanks.

The thing is Monzon was tall for a middle weight-just compare him to Griffith and Briscoe-- so guys had to reach for him, he would lean back and then step and counter. Plus he had long arms, so it was not easy to get inside his methodical jab. So it was difficult to hit Monzon with a hard combination. Plus as this shows, he could fight effectively going backwards . The guy beat some of the very best fighters of the era like Benvenuti, Valedez, Napoles, and Griffith.

One of the smartest boxers ever . He ended his career unbeaten in 84 bouts if I rememeber well, and without even a scratch . How good was his defense ? Well, it was impossible to land a combination on him and in the end, regardless to his technique, that is what makes the difference. Arguably a top 3 MW ever and a possible contender for the 1st place . My favourite for sure .

Saw most of his defense defenses on wide world of sports in the 70's. He was tall and rangey with heavy hands.. His power was deceiving but when he landed it took its toll . before he retired he went 12 years without a loss. Truely a great champion. His demise was he was convicted of killing his wife and sent to prison. Don't know if he ever got out or if he is still alive. But as a fighter he was one of the greats. He and Marvin hagler would have been the fight of the century. Would be hard to think of anyone who could beat Hagler but monzon maybe could have got it done. Peace n smoke.

Carlos Monzon, if he had been American, would have entered the legend of world boxing and earned millions of dollars, unfortunately being Argentine, his merits and greatness have not been recognized. First of all he was not a brawl boxer, he did not like to fight in the ring, he was clean, elegant, Mohamme Ali jab, right from KO more devastating than Mike Tyson's right who destroyed his opponents with a firestorm, Carlos Monzon with only two shots, left jab and immediately after the right load of dynamite knocked down the opponents. I would like to point out a feature that only the greatest boxer in boxing history possessed in the world, Mohammed Ali. Ali hit while backing away dancing like a dragonfly, very elegant footwork, extraordinary athletic training, I don't remember other great champions who hit while backing away. they won by attacking from the first to the last round, Ali and Monzon won by staggering even for 15 rounds, fans of my generation can say, I was there and I saw them fight.

B. N. Willis Beats Hagler? In a dream only. Minion had three losses he avenged against local cab drivers in Buenos Aires. Toto Lectoure told Monzon his style was so boring he needed to quit boxing! He avenged his three losses and fourth those 3 guys like 15 times total padding his record. His draw and split decision lost to Benny Briscoe were outright robberies. He waa gifted against Emile Griffith, but looked good against club fighting Colombian Rodrigo Valdes in his last two fights. I like the guy, but beat MMW? Not a chance in he'll. Hagler never really lost because he got jobbed in two draws against Vito Antuofermo and Sugar Ray Seales. Plus in his 3 losses, two early against Willie Monroe and Bobby Watts, both from my hometown of Philly, he was Hobbes. SSR DID NOT BEAT HAGLER! PALEEEAAASSSEEE!!! So Hagler could have never lost. He literally would have beat Monzon to death.

que difícil meterse en la corta distancia, y si te quedabas a media te lesionaba toda la cara.. podés ver en todas las peleas que nunca le toman la distancia, cuando menos lo esperan reciben golpes de ko.

As much as I like monzon , Leonard’s speed and Hearns power , Haglers pressure would all be too much for Monzon but still one of the greats
@hanzagod

I mean I could maybe see Hagler winning a close decision but Leonard and Hearns? Not so sure about that.

None of those guys had Monzon's work rate or stamina and only Hagler had an equal chin.

Hagler would have destroyed him

While I don't have an issue with someone picking Hagler to win, there's no way either man would "destroy" each other. They're arguably #1 and #2 best Middleweights in history it would be a close competitive fight.

Monzon was actually, deceptively fast. Watch his combinations in his last fight against Valdez.

Have you seen his last fight against Valdez? Watch the 10th round. Every fighter thought, " What's so special about Monzon?". " I can beat him". They found him daunting when they fought him, and all those fighters you mentioned, including Hagler would be outclassed by him. He just had that will and way to win. And to think he had to take shots on his hands, cause he had bad arthritis. Otherwise he would get even more knockout than what he did. Nobody came near him, not even Sugar Ray Robinson, or Harry Greb.
