CARLY RAE JEPSEN - THE LONELIEST TIME ALBUM REACTION 

Said it once but I’ll say it again. Carly’s a grower, not a shower. After three listens I actually think this is some of her best work.

Interesting that the song you love so much is the song most CARLY fans absolutely despise. Hope you can re-listen someday without the arbitrary obsession with song length because the album is fantastic.

She's the best pop singer out there, like, for so many years. Absolutely love her.

the bonus tracks are actually really good you should hear them someday after you forget how much you didnt like the album

Kind of disappointed that you skipped the bonus tracks. To be fair I almost did myself too because the album was also a letdown for me and near the end I was losing interest but the bonus tracks are the best ones on the album especially Anxious. CRJ has a tendency to move some of her best songs (period) to side Bs and bonus tracks. I don’t know why but she always does this.

I really didn't think I'd like this album from the singles and snippets but it ended up being one of my favorite releases I'm shocked if you liked western wind and sounds like it I would check out aly and aj's a touch of the beat

the singles were bop but the Rest of the songs were just like fillers or what :/ her vocals were fire though it's just the production in some of the tracks we're messy, sometimes its got part that it's annoying and not necessary omfg carly 🥺 gurl better give us pop perfection this 2026 next

Dont hate me, but I'm kind of dissapointed with the lonliest time and with midnights. CRJ y TS coincided on the release day and on not coming up to the expectations. Even so, IMO the lonliest time is better than midnights.

2 things: 1. Joshua Tree is a national park in California. It’s very big with the trendy artsy people in the LA. 2. I’m actually quite shocked at your reaction to this album. It’s a total banger. I agree with the other comments that she’s a grower not a shower but I guess if you’re not into it on the first listen, you’re not gonna give it much else attention.

Honestly felt the same way listening to this album. Definitely a step down from her past two albums unfortunately.

Omg this album is one of the best this year!

I absolutely LOVE this album!! I would suggest you take a relisten in different states of being and think of the album almost as mini sonic arcs! You have songs like Far Away, Western Wind, Bends, and Go Find Yourself Or Whatever...which are very vibey, mellow, cerebral, and earthy. Then you have 80's inspired tracks like Surrender My Heart, Talking To Yourself, and Bad Thing Twice. Then there's the disco and funk arc with The Loneliest Time, So Nice, Sideways, etc. Just my own observation. I love the different palates and that she's looking at the content being cohesive thematically rather than sonically. Keep up the reviews!

I fully disagree with your take on talking about some tracks being "made for TikTok" due to length, in fact I feel Beach House is the most TikTok-y track on the album by far as it leans far heavier into the memeability and simple boppy sound of songs constructed for TikTok (though Joshua Tree is also up there and both are my least favorite on the album tbh). Her albums aren't exactly meant to be listened to in isolation as her artistic focus is on the cohesion of an album rather than the individual quality of each track, hence why each song could feel somewhat lacking on it's own (f.e. when one pauses after each track for review purposes) but as a collective takes you through the musical narrative she constructs throughout. Bends f.e. feels like an introduction to Western Wind because that's literally what it is, it's meant to transition into the new vibe the album is going in which then gets fully encompassed by Western Wind. Is The Loneliest Time her best album? Of course not, we all know it's Emotion and I highly doubt she can ever top Emotion unless she goes on another 3 year long writing bender where she tries to fully reinvent her sound and message. But the album is a solid evolution of the musical ideas she was exploring in Dedicated and imo a massive improvement on that album which I was honestly kind of disappointed by. Carly was bogged down as the "Call Me Maybe girl" for years but now I feel like she's shoved into this other box as the "Emotion girl" where anything she even attempts post-Emotion gets unjustly scrutinized for not being of the quality of Emotion which is kind of impossible to achieve since Emotion was such a groundbreaking album for her career and altered how people viewed her music. Of course I'm not saying you're wrong to dislike the album, that's obviously fine. Sometimes we just don't connect with art for one reason or another. Just some food for thought that popped in my head while watching the vid. I quite enjoyed the album, thought it was a nice little chill album with some interesting innovations from her previous sound and a massive step up from her Dedicated era imo, I felt it captured the authenticity of Carly much more than Dedicated did and gave glimpses into the Carly sound we all loved in Emotion.

This album is really strong, possibly her best complete work. I think it will grow on you if you give it some more time, or it's just not for you which is also cool!

Anxiety is my fave song and the fact it wasn't listened too just makes me sad. This album is one of the best albums and I actually think Midnights takes inspiration from it as does my Taylor swift fan friend. I liked it so much I saw her live to sing it. I'm not a short length song kinda person at all but to be honest on this album I never looked at the length and the fact you spent so much of this reaction focusing on it is kinda sad.

I'm surprised you don't like Talking to Yourself, its one of the most favored on this album.

I agree about song length in general, I think the sweet spot is 3:30-4:30 cause you've got time to bop and get the message without it droning on and on

I’m so glad you made it to GO FIND YOURSELF OR WHATEVER. It was the only song i loved and for that reason I revisited the album and liked a few again. I think track order really affected this albums first listening experience. I’ve noticed that with quite a few albums lately that the track order doesn’t flow right and ruins it. And I hateeeeeee that, I don’t want to have to find gems in the last few tracks

Tbh I feel mostly the same as you! The singles are great (and Joshua Tree grew hard on me) but I haven't really been able to connect with a CRJ album since e-mo-tion unfortunately :( Appreciate the honest thoughts! I'm very happy to have a few new Carly songs to vibe to though, and it's always good to see others enjoy the album!
