We all know Carmelo Anthony as a "pure scorer." Whether you mean that as a compliment or an insult is up to you, but it helps to understand how he arrived at that reputation -- how he won big everywhere but the NBA, and how he saved both a college program and a struggling NBA franchise along the way. Let's meet the prior versions of Melo in the Prism.

Regardless of his net, they still made the postseason, he was a part of that regardless, and then he ended his career as the lakers arguable best shooter on a shitty lakers team that didn’t really build a good enough team and then they blackballed him out after he avg 13 off the bench as a solid shooter, they say his defense wasn’t good 😂😂😂 as if it matters when he’s jus out there for O, there’s players out there for D who suck on O but other players make up for that, why couldn’t that be said the same for Melo on defense? Absolutely inexcusable for him not to even reach the finals. The winning formula slapped him in the face in the 08 Olympics. His number one priority shouldve been to do what the Celtics did that year. He watched Bosh take a role. He watched Dwade surround himself with talent instead of waiting on the franchise. He watched Bron sign 1+1 deals for what seemed like a decade in order to control his career path. Ahhh. I had many debates in barbershops during his career telling ppl that he wasn't a winner, and would only win once he aged and ring chased by latching on to a contender but even that didn't happen. Every NBA generation has players like him: dudes who can go get buckets but offense is the only component of their games they develop and those types don't lead teams to championships. When Phil Jackson was GM of Knicks, the fans and the media wanted him to come down and coach but he didn't and it's my speculation was that he didn't want to coach Melo because he knew Anthony didn't have "it." Melo's such a "What If" for Memphis Grizzlies fans like me: 1.) the Pistons actually drafted Darko with our 2003 pick. If we'd kept that pick, we could've gotten Melo.* 2.) We always wanted him in the Grit n Grind days, when everyone was defending and only Mike Conley was scoring. If he'd come to Memphis, it would've looked a lot like those Olympics teams. And now I live in Syracuse, so I'm reminded of that What If every day. Congrats to Melo tho: he seems perfectly happy doing what he's doing, and I love that for him! *If that pick had become Number 1, Memphis would've kept it anyway. It was literally top 1 protected for Detroit. You can go back and see the frustration on Jerry West's face when it came out Number 2.

I've always thought that Melo getting drafted by the Pistons is the biggest What If in NBA history. All those vets, who played defense, with Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle as coaches.....Yeah. This guy would have been playing some defense, and the PIstons window of contention would have been extended by years.

Melo would’ve been a great pick, but I’d like to have seen Wade on that team as a sixth man
@Davivd2
@Davivd2 Месяц назад
@@fortynights1513 Wade would have been a better fit. But I'm just saying Melo because of what was known at the time. Tayshaun Prince was a complete surprise for the Pistons who went from being an unproven rookie to a clutch small forward who was a perfect fit for them. Wade would have slotted in perfect with Tayshaun and I agree, would have been the better fit. But at the time, the consensus was that Melo was the second best player in the draft and Wade ended up being the steal of the draft that year. Even I didn't know that Wade was going to be as good as he was until I saw him dropping clutch shots in the playoffs. The benefit of hindsight...Wade over Melo all day.

@elliemyers6435

Yeah, I am sure Melo still thinks about this. Had he just waited until the end of the season, the Knicks wouldn't have had to gut their roster to get him...He also wouldn't have been dragged so publicly, forcing a trade if he had just waited. And, in that scenario, the Knicks could have been a formidable player in the East.
@SmoothCriminal12
@SmoothCriminal12 Месяц назад
I think part of it was also the Knicks being paranoid that the Nets would swoop in and steal him. Considering they had the assets to get it done and we're about to move to Brooklyn, they probably didn't want to risk Melo staying with the Nets.

You know what’s crazy is that anyone can call Carmelo Anthony as “loser”. The man in the sport of basketball historically has won at almost every level except the NBA where he was stuck on mediocre teams most of his career. The one time he had a solid, complete team he made it to the WCF with the Nuggets. That’s not to say poor Melo but there are a lot of cases where the best players just don’t find or wind up on the right team, have the right supporting cast. Tbh if Detroit had drafted Melo I feel like he’d have an NBA ring.

he probably turns out more disciplined and a better leader (with a ring or two) had he gotten drafted by detroit because they have established vets there to straighten him up... unlike at denver where they immediately gave him the key as a rookie, so he instead developed an attitude early and never really went far until, ironically, a vet from detroit became his teammate

as an nba history fanatic, there is one problem I could never answer. which one was peak Melo? Denver or NY?
@gems_wanted
@gems_wanted Месяц назад
Denver was more athletic, better slasher, better finisher. NY was a way more complete player overall, much better shooter, worse finisher. NY teams were terribly built though. Biggest issue for Melo is honestly just that his team composition rarely matched his skillset. His best seasons were with Chauncey and Raymond Felton/JKidd - he needed good facilitators to run the offense so he could focus on his spots - he didn't have the skillset to orchestrate in Denver at all and by the time he was better at that, he was surrounded by terrible rosters, then the injuries. The hot take is that 2013-14 is Melo's actual peak season but the team was garbage.

I wouldn't classify Melo as a loser. He was in the playoffs for basically the bulk of his career & he proved he could take a team to the CF in the crazy Western Conference as the best player. That's not a loser to me. A loser to me is a #1 option player who didn't translate to even enough RS success to make the playoffs more times than not. A loser would be someone like a DeMarcus Cousins or Stephon Marbury
