Exactly, I love this. I wonder why is SNL so NOT funny and this is absolutely gold, without being obscene, sexual or rude. I love it that it’s on RU-vid now
@@tsnovak20 Because all *SNL* does is push their anti-conservative political viewpoints on their audience and calls it ✌️comedy✌️. Hollywood is now full of morons who don't understand that people don't want their political opinions. Their sole job is to entertain the masses, and they can't even do that. It was pretty amusing to hear Ricky Gervais call out his fellow _'entertainers'_ on this for both the dying golden globes and oscars. *www.foxnews.com/entertainment/ricky-gervais-oscars-2020-politics*
the great actress Joanne Woodward, who was also the wife of Paul Newman. She won the academy award for best actress in 1957 for the movie "the three faces of Eve"....@@Lifeafterthedarknarc
Joanne Woodward was a wonderful actress, and a totally class act. She had already won an Oscar when she and Paul Newman got married, for Three Faces of Eve. Paul once famously said, when asked if he was ever tempted to stray from his marriage, "Why go out for hamburger when you've got steak waiting at home?"
Been watching these clips for hours remembering how my mom and I would laugh our faces off...then the first comment I read is yours. What great memories, hey? 🙂
My God the acting in that scene! Carol Was like oscar worthy all the emotions she exhibited in those few minutes. And I've never seen Eunice win before. Wow.
Derek Washington It was pretty great to see her stand up for herself and win. I’ve always felt bad for Eunice in these Mama sketches. She is always the butt of the joke. Not this time. Glad to see her as The victor against Mama and Ed.
Robert Gardea One of my favorite movies that Joanne Woodward was in was The Three Faces of Eve. It’s an old b&w classic from the late 50’s where she was diagnosed with multiple personalities. Great old movie 👍 She and Paul Newman both starred in The Long Hot Summer, also a very good late 50’s classic!
That can can dance 💃🏻 that they’re doing reminds me of the can can dance 💃🏻 that my two young daughters and I used to do. Now I’m 79 years old and I live with my oldest daughter and her wonderful husband. 😅😅😅😅😅😅
This was the same year Joanne Woodward was in “Sybil” with Sally Field, one of the best mini series ever done on television for which she was nominated for an Emmy.
These family sketches are like little one act plays; the quality of the writing is like that of fine theatre. Eunice is such a well developed, multi faceted, and, ultimately, tragic creation; Carol Burnett is at her best when portraying her. This episode is particularly fine as it includes Joanne Woodward, a magnificent actress in her own right.
Just watched this last night on TV. I didn't know it was Joanne Woodward until they said her name as being a guest. And I've seen this so many times over the years.
I don't think the Carol Burnett show was so much the acting it was the reacting to the lines on the page. That's something you can't teach. There was a lot of ad-libbing on this show too. So, as funny as the scripts might have been, they were made 10 times as funny with the natural way they said the lines and reacted to the lines.
@@torridd agreed!! Carol had such great expressions in her face that ALWAYS added extra comedy to her acts!!! They just don't make comedy like this any more and it's so sad!!! It's all about filth and fowl, and fowl and filth and woke crapola!!! Sigh!!! I'm showing my age again!!! LOL!!!
She also kind of won in that "Sorry!" sketch. Not to mention, the ones with Phillip in them and at the end of "Charades," she did feel a little better afterwards.
Yes....she was...I would be just as devastated as she when she lost her husband. They really loved each other. I'd DIE! Paul was s-o-o endearing! When I was 13 and saw the modern day "Exodus" movie, I was miserable. I actually missed him. And felt that way about some guys ever since! I'm 68 now......
@Solo female travel Well I think you need a little education on beauty perhaps because you obviously are deficient in your understanding in that area. She was beautiful and a fine actress and a wonderful human being. As was her husband. Case Closed
Midge was a really good sport putting up with those insults from battle axe Mama, & I LOVED how she stood up for herself to the battle axe Mama & to Ed! And what she said is true! It doesn't matter what kind of lifestyle you live, as long as you are nice & kind to people! Amen Midge! 👏👏
Midge’s hair reminds me of Sylvia Fine’s hair style from The Nanny. Joanne Woodward looks gorgeous at 46 years old! My favorite movie with Joanne Woodward is “The Three Faces of Eve”. No wonder she won the Oscar for her performance, she was phenomenal! Truly a beautiful woman who stayed married to the same man for 50 years! A class act!
😄 Ol’ Eunice really put the fear of God into Ed and Mama at the end! Her expressions are priceless. And what a treat to see the great Joanne Woodward in a guest comic role. Hilarious but touched with that little bit of pathos/sadness, like all the ‘Family’ sketches. Eunice just wanted an evening of fun, but her friend gets driven off by the reality she is sadly stuck with. They don’t make quality sketch comedy like this anymore. Long gone.
I wish somebody would guest start Carol Burnett & Vickie Lawrence as “Eunice & Momma” on a show while they are both alive. That would be so great! Seeing Eunice & Momma in old age.
@@amahra100 But then she was brought back for the Mama's Family series a year later -- with no reference to the special -- and was the lead character on the show for its entire network and syndicated run -- until 1989. So the special shouldn't be any kind of impediment.
@@amahra100 No problem, Harriet! One explanation -- other than the likely one that the writers just wanted to bring the character back without explanation and hoped viewers would forget -- is that Thelma's funeral in the special was supposed to take place at some unspecified date in the future, and Mama's Family just hadn't reached that point in time yet. Sort of a Sci-Fi twist on this great comedy!
@@deborahburroughs8905 Me too. She's just so beautiful, as was her gorgeous husband, Paul Newman. Married until he passed, and what great films they made together.
Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence and Harvey Korman and Tim Conway made me laugh so hard when I was a little kid. Gosh I loved this show! And I'm watching it now in 2022 and it's even funnier. Brilliant. Simply BRILLIANT!!!
so nice to see Joanne Woodward, I always thought she was so pretty and she was a really good actress. Carol got to work and play with so many talented people.
@@carasmussen27 I love love love when EUNICE TELLS HER MOM .."LISTEN OLD WOMAN ....." I KNOW WE ALL LOVE OUR MOMS BUT SOMETIMES THEY BE TOO MUCH TO HANDLE ...LMBO❤️
Going off on a " toot" 😂🎉 lol And knocking over that TV tray and that look in her eyes is the most perfect way to tell somebody off without saying a word!!! 😂😂😂 Eunice is the BEST!!
There is an underlying sadness to this story (eg Midge’s abusive husband). As wonderfully comical as these are, they have a bittersweet almost dramatic undertone which is why they are so brilliant. Sort of a combination of Tennessee Williams and Tracy Letts
Great point! This sketch in particular seems like a Tennessee Williams play, moving yet more sad than funny at the end. And it has an Academy Award-winning actress (Joanne Woodward) to boot!
@@francinejones2524 No. The distinctive writing allows to imagine a backstory and there are many clues that would indicate this. These can be watched for sheer enjoyment as well as some in depth analysis because it’s fun
I have always loved this episode. Acting at it's finest. Thank you to Joanne Woodward for bringing out the acting chops of Eunice, Ed, and Thelma. Wow, just wow!!!!!!
This was one of my favorite Family episodes. My mom and I loved these Family skits. We used to laugh like crazy. Eunice was our favorite character. Carol Burnette is mega talented. She deserves every ounce of her success. God bless Carol and all the other actors on her TV show.
It was the one night I was allowed to stay up late to watch the carol Burnett show.i treasured those t.v. nights with my wonderful mother. R.i.p. mom. Till we meet again.
I loved watching these as a kid, I'll never forget that big old brown TV set and my brother, sister and I sitting around it. I think I liked TV shows from back then way more than today. The Carol Burnett show, Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, Gilligan's Island I Love Lucy and The Golden Girls to name a few. I know they're all from different time periods but watching them in reruns is so relaxing brings me back to when times were good in the world. 🙂🇨🇦✌
This skit was always a piece of art. Like watching a mini TV playhouse. The best of acting, and always a bit of sadness with the comedy. I'm grateful for the uploads.
Mama Harper reminds me a little too much of my own mother and I am her Eunice! Except my vice wasn’t liquor, it was pills! Always negative, never had a kind word to say about anyone and mood swings that would give you whiplash! I miss my mom every day, but sadly, I’m glad she’s gone. Oh and I forgot that my brother was the Ellen of the family. Everyone’s favorite, can do no wrong, but I was the one that took care of mom while dear Ellen didn’t do anything! Yup, this is my family! Isn’t it sad?
I feel there should have been at least one sketch in which Eunice wakes up one day and everything is as she's always wanted it to be: She's left Raytown, Mama, Ed and Ellen are out of her life, she's rich, a star in show business, and married to Duke Reeves. Granted this would most likely turn out to be just a dream at the end of the sketch, but it sounds like a fun idea to explore.
So you mean Eunice dreams about the real life Carol 😂 It would be interesting also if, as Eunice, they did like a Eunice Higgins Show (a la Burnett) but just for a sketch haha
@@nelle1001 like if she was an Oprah or Ellen or Mike Douglas or Dinah Shore talk show? That would be hilarious. I bet her hair and dress would be similar, only slightly more polished.
I always hoped there would be someplace where Eunice finally drops Mama, gets acting lessons, and succeeds in life. In the TV film, they do show her agreeing to leave with Philip in the end and pursue her dreams. Double bonus points for a scene in which she comes back to spit in Mama's face.
