Do the books ever elaborate on why the Old Gods don't rule the world at the present times? Why do they always lurking in the dark but never come forth? What stop them?
The situation as I recall is that the current astronomy around Earth is harmful to them, and that's why they're waiting for the stars to align in a particular way that isn't harmful. Keep in mind, I could be completely wrong, as it's been a bit since I read any Lovecraft.
They don't really care enough about the earth to do anything but sometime go and mess with it. Cthulhu is sealed there but he's fairly weak in the grand scheme of things and was sealed by another alien race.
Mostly because they don't care about us, we are insignificant for the vast majority of them Chtulhu is simply imprisoned here but he could have been sent to any other random planet, the planet wasn't chosen specifically. Nyarlathotep is the only one that shows interests in humans and not in a conquering way, he's just like a kid playing with ants
You guys are scared by this, but if something like this were to happen we'll be forced to either abandon the planet or create mechas to fight them 1 on 1. Both ends pretty cool.

You could count humanitys remaining days on one hand if the old ones awoke. No time to even plan either since nobody is sane anymore. One of which is the entire universe... Yeah I'd say we have a a chance against the old ones.
The super boss in Etrian Odyssey 3, the Abyssal God, is basically Cthulhu, but I don't think that's a fight anyone has ever won going in blind. Mostly people know all of its abilities and build a team specifically for it or soft reset to rig the AI because the boss fight is so hard. I don't think we can soft reset reality. At least we'll die with cool music though

@Genesis James It's an event that happens twice a year, it's when the sun is, relative to the equator, at it's "highest"(north most) or "lowest"(south most) point. It's opposed by the equinox which, also, happens twice a year and it's when the sun is, dead center, on the equator and, thus, daytime and night-time are equal.
