Let's take a closer look at these 10 songs and see why Carole King is one of the greatest songwriters to ever live.

Aimee, I cannot thank you enough, or say enough about your beautiful talent! Yes, Carole King is phenomenal and I’ve always really admired her music and songwriting, and I love what you have done here for millions of viewers who might not know about her. BUT... this video is as much a testament to you and your musical intuition as it is to hers! I absolutely Love the tone of your voice, your incredible ability at the piano keyboard, and your sweet sensitivity towards the music and the composer!! Your knowledge and FEEL of music theory is simply amazing. I’m a professional musician and composer as well, but I have to say, you are incredibly talented, and a true gift to everyone who knows you! Thanks!!

I actually have thought about the lyric for "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", specifically how differently the lyric hits me in The Shirelles' version compared to Carole's version from 'Tapestry'. I always thought in The Shirelles' version, the lyric sounded cute and innocent like a young teenager with a crush. And the "tonight" in "Tonight you're mine" really just meant "now" or "presently". And the "tomorrow" in "will you love me tomorrow" was vaguely sometime in the future. So, it was just a young girl wondering if love would last. But in Carole's version, with her stripped down solo vocals, "tonight" suddenly becomes literally "right now, this night" and "tomorrow" meaning when you wake up in the morning. And I can picture a woman in bed next to her man. It's heart wrenching. It's fascinating to me how the same lyric can have such a different emotional impact.

If you think about it that way, it's almost as sad as Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me". Interesting that both songs were written by men (just the lyrics in the case of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow").

Hi Aimee. I'm 72, and grew up with all of these songs (except the Chicken Soup one - never heard that before). I loved these songs then, and still do. And I loved your in-depth analysis of each one. It never occurred to me how unusual that modulation in Pleasant Valley Sunday was. We saw the play "Beautiful" in Toronto (where we live), and enjoyed it so much that we immediately bought the soundtrck. Thank you for another great video.

Thank you Aimee - I enjoyed this so much! Tapestry was the first album I ever bought with my own money, and the reason I asked my mom to take piano lessons when I was 14 or so (just about 50 years ago). Since then, I've bought all her albums and sheet music books, and many years later, finally got to see her perform - with James Taylor no less - what a magical evening! Picked up the guitar in my mid thirties, and now write my own songs, and continue to be inspired by her brilliance.

Hi Aimee, I feel that not enough has been said about the genius of Carole King. I saw her in the 80’s at the Beacon in NY. No opening act, she did the whole show and opened with “Home Again”. ESP the song ‘Music’ from ‘Music record’ sounds like an extension of Tapestry, Music has this Waltz 6/8 or 3/4 time that reminds me of John Coltrane version of ‘These Are My Favorite Things’ but her song has a Gorgeous Change that is so uplifting, Just truly beautiful, not only is music gorgeous but the lyrics are just has positive and inspirational! Pleasant Valley Sunday is the one that sticks out for me from these songs... Carole's music along with Gerry's somewhat acerbic lyrics - the recieved wisdom being that moving to the suburbs was what a young Carole had aspired to, the family life, the car the house, the 2.2 children... and yet Goffin hated the idea of it and didnt want to move out of the city. That shows up particularly in the middle 8.... "Creature comfort goals they only numb my soul/ And make it hard for me to see/My thoughts all seem to stray to places far away/I need a change of scenery..." and "Rows of houses that are all the same and no one seems to care" Goffin certainly didnt seem to have any interest in becoming a weekend squire, for sure, LOL. but the track of hers that means the most to me is So Far Away from Tapestry. Bloody amazing.....

I have been in radio for 23 years and I know what it takes to do a well researched program. And this is certainly one of those. If you are reading notes you are doing it very subtlly or else, as I suspect, you just know this stuff. Oh and you sing and play like an angel. I was switched on to Carole King's music in the 1960s, but i confess I didnt have a clue who the writers of songs were back then as a high school student. It was that 'Tapestry' album that alerted me to the name Carole King. In this video you unlocked some of the mysteries of her chord progressions for me and I am most grateful for that. But most of all, I am thankful for the sheer entertainment value of this video. Congratulations on a splendid analysis, and thank you for a wonderfully entertaining 20 minutes and change.

My (very partial, top of my head) list of favorites from down in the trenches a little: "Hey Girl" (big hit for Freddie Scott); "As We Go Along" (Monkees, with trio of Ry Cooder and Neil Young and Carole King on alternately-tuned guitars!); "I Can't Stay Mad At You" (Skeeter Davis); "No Easy Way Down" (Carole King); "Goin' Back" (Byrds/Carole King). Elsewhere I mentioned my favorite of favorites, "The Snow Queen", from her sort-of first album with The City, also covered beautifully by Roger Nichols' group. Carole King is a goddess. I genuflect. Oh, my achin' joints!

I love Carole King’s music. I just spent a week working on her songs to study her piano voicings. For example, left-hand playing the 4th of the 1 chord while the right-hand alternates from the V to I chord (as in, So Far Away). One of her more straight forward songs that I can’t get out of my head is, “Jazzman.” Great song! Have you ever made a video about all the great songs written by Diane Warren? She’s got some great piano voicings in her songs, too.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and I’ve always said that, to me, Carole King and James Taylor were the 70s!! I love their music so much! I loved James Taylor’s version of Up on the Roof! And I also love Carole King singing “A Natural Woman”! Tapestry is still one of my very favorite albums! I have been trying to “teach myself” to play piano since I was 11 (I’m 65 now)! I have an “Easy Piano” piano book of Carole King’s Tapestry album. I love that you’re playing the songs and giving the chords (although I don’t really understand everything you’re talking about with the chords since I’ve never had any real piano lessons)! Your voice is great!
