I agree completely but they all have a lot of talent. Dom Flemons is an artist in his own right. I mean, like a solo artist. You know. The others are awesome too.
My boy is learning bluegrass and country music from the Carolina Chocolate Drops, among others, and right now given the news, that makes me cry with hope.
Now this is real country music, not that bland garbage that Nashville grinds out like sausage. Carolina Chocolate Drops is a true national treasure. Rhiannon Giddens has the voice of an angel.
+Stephanie B arl I grew up on classic rock (60's-80's) with a slight country influence in the early 90's. Spent most of my 20's hating country, but now love it. Not the top 40 rural pop, but classic country, songs like this (check out their earlier stuff with Justin, much better in my opinion) and bluegrass, both modern and classic. In otherwords, great taste!
simplyafederalist It might be worth checking out some classic country. I turned onto bluegrass long before country, and I still dislike the VAST majority of modern country, but I've found country's historical backlog to be a large reservoir of untapped (for me) great music. Some's good, some's bad, but if you like this I imagine you'd find something that's personally gold to you if you're willing to do the digging!
Welcome to the party ;) I get it though, I only heard of them a couple years ago, and only because someone on the "Wyoming Sounds" radio show appears to have a soft spot for them.
Played this song for a group of girls in a remote part of north India where I've done research for 10 years. Translated "main gaonwali hoo." They loved it.
I love Rhiannon's voice. I enjoyed her work with Solas on the "Lay Your Money Down" song. As a singer songwriter down here in Georgia, I can't tell you how much this song appeals to me. :) Thanks!
Was just introduced to Rhiannon because of The New Basement Tapes and fell in love with her voice. Finally checking out some of her Carolina Chocolate Drops work and my initial reaction has been reinforced. Absolutely need this CD.
If it spreads this wonderful culture and music to a wider audience, I see no problem with it. I love the traditional music, it's what attracted me to CCD to begin with, but I also think this is a great fusion sound, an entertaining and applicable video, and a great song, period. The way I have been introduced to most of my favorite musicians is through their "pop" hits, regardless of genre. Once they got their hooks in me, I was sold, and if this reaches a new audience, some of which may have that "eureka" moment of new musical discovery that I love so much as a result of it, then I'm all for it!
This is my first time to hear this group. I'm glad I just happened by. Keep up the good work and keep the good sounds coming. Thanks for the up load. Great voice, God Bless.
My moms home is Richmond County North Carolina and I lived there a large portion of my life. This band seems familiar, like kids I knew lived out in the country and played music. Real "Carolina" feel to it.
Saw them open for DMB my friend had an extra ticket to. Absolutely brilliant! Such raw energy and felt like my soul was taken back in time to a more simpler time. Female lead vox had quite a bit of charisma. Bought a shirt for my friend and a cd for my self.
I'm so glad you released a new album. This song is fantastic. I identify with the lyrics, I'm a "country girl" too, a village girl. Lots of love from Spain
It depends on what your definition of country is. If you consider someone like Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean to be country than no it is not. But if you think today's maintstream country music is more like teeny bopper pop than this is bonafide, genuine country music. Country music is suppose to have soul, they're just putting it back in there.
Hell white woman from southeastern ohio. If it did'nt have butter or bacon grease in it it was'nt worth eating. Always the mountain girl now I live an hour outside of charlotte n.c.just discovered this band and I can't wait to see them in concert. Brought back alot of memories!!!!
I've been in the South. NC : Twice. Loved the place for all reasons. But still like my own neck of the woods. One of the Northern States...……………….. SCOTLAND!! ;-) ;-)
amazing........ just wished more people realised this music exists rather then listening to the rubbish on the radio. REAL MUSIC. REAL TALENT. REAL GOOOOOOOD
ask yourself where country comes from? Scottish Irish and English Folk mixed with Blues that's country, there are other tracks by them that mix in Jazz Gospel basically they are a roots band with all these influences ad even some modern stuff has found its way in and dovetails in nicely
I like some mainstream music, but I wish all the different country sounds could be in mainstream. I just recently discovered this band, and they are quickly becoming one of my favorites. A bunch of talented people.
I saw them perform this song in Telluride, Colorado at the annual Country and Bluegrass Festival , and then, again on the 2014 Mountain Song at Sea Music Cruise. Now, Rhiannon is no longer a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but she has continued to perform as a solo artist and is currently a Grammy nominee! See her if you can!
AWESOME song! Makes me proud to be southern and a country boy. Carolina Chocolate Drops... FINE job on 'Country Girl.' Holler at me when ya'll come to Atlanta, hear?
This is far by the best song I've heard let alone music clip.. everyone is so happy and enjoying their zone. Such a great community. I honestly feel like joining in
I saw you guys on the PBS documentary about Americana Music. As soon as I heard ya'll, I knew it was going to be amazing! I LOVE LOVE LOVE yalls sound. Thank you for sharing it with the world! I look forward to watching ya'll become a household name :D
Greetings from Finland, also we here know this talented root band, there was many page review in local "Blues news" magazine and I got intrested too! I love them..
So, I saw the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Pittsburgh Arts Festival a few years back, and, during their performance (which was amazing) they performed a song that sounded gaelic, it featured a pounding drum and soaring vocals, but I cannot for the life of me remember the title, or even a better description for the style. Can anyone help me out?
Only discovered CCD a few months ago and I just love them and her voice! I'm also in a similar band and find this music very inspiring after playing metal and then blues for so long. Great video! Wish you guys much success!!
first heard this group on a tribute to johnny cash. forget the song title they covered been following them ever since. just good original music and sound style love them
great song and video...glad to say I saw you when, when you played the Cabin Stage for the first time at Merlefest and blew that crowd away, you've been a favorite ever since. Thanks for keeping it going.
I think, to a degree, they are talking about country as a style of music and trying to reclaim part of that tradition. CCD's work is all about looking at the common roots of southern music, which crossed race, and bringing that forward like other roots artists. This is closer to traditional country than most of pop passing for country. They're more influenced by bluegrass and old time picking than Western swing, as you suggest, but still country.
Please, Please, Please, PLEASE! we need to see you in Australia! Preferably in FNQ, but I'll travel as far as Brisbane. Come on down under. We need you!
I din't like this song when I first heard it...I was glad to get a little color into Country Music...It is growing on me...A little singing rappy ditty...Good for them, wish them the best..
My soul is country but my mind is city. I feel alive in the open fields and that is where I belong but I'm stuck in the city living the life I have but hoping to escape someday. If my mind wasn't a part of the city I could not survive the rush of this everyday life.
I looooove this song. I´m so happy that I discovered this band and their music. Does someone know the chords of this song? I woud like play it on my guitar, I enjoy this song a lot just singing, but with guitar would be amazing.
