From BBC One - The Stand Up Show - April 1995 (Comedy from the stand-up circuit. Tonight, Caroline Hook (alias Mrs Merton ), Paul Tonkinson and Phill Jupitus. Hosted by Barry Cryer)
What an amazing talent. For those that don’t know, she was born with eye cancer and life didn’t get much kinder. Despite so much suffering, she still lit the world up with magnificent humour. RIP Sweet Caroline.
@@HarryBarryGary Not too sweet to her husband Peter Hook who she physically abused during their marriage, but yeah we shall gloss over all that because a man was the victim and not a woman. But yeah, sweet Caroline.
@@georgebyron468 shame as she was very funny , and like many abusers be it mentally or physically ( both with her ) it's hard to believe. But sadly true . I only found out recently how badly Caroline treated her husband 😱
"I'm trying this act out for a friend. She was too nervous to do it," must be one of the most absurdly funny lines ever uttered on a comedy stage. Caroline just throws it away, but it pops back into your mind hours later, or even years, and you laugh all over again.
Caroline was epic, so naturally funny with no ego or overkill comedy. So observational and real... I loved Mrs Merton, spent time as a single mum watching this icon and laughing my pants off with a bottle of guinness and my universal remote control waiting for her show. Life is so different now,, I miss those days!!! Rest in comedy heaven sweet funny lady 🙏❤️
Some of the current so called comedians ( male and female ) should watch this and learn . Brilliant delivery and timing . Caroline Aherne was different class .
taotoo2 Yes, that would be ideal. Let's hope the video uploader reads this. iSkySoft seems to be an amalgamation of iPhone, Sky and Microsoft ... obviously a big company at play here.
What a brilliant woman. Royle family is still one of my all time favourite comedies. Can’t believe we’ll never get to see a new stuff from Caroline, she was so talented and brought joy to my heart in everything she did
I could listen to her for hours. This performance was a masterclass in delivery. You could so easily bomb with that material but she's such a natural comedian, so likeable and charismatic. I remember hearing her on Martin Kelner's show as Mrs Merton before she was famous. Really clever woman!
Some good observations. Reminds me a lot of most American comedians who don't have exceptional -or often even above average material-, but their character, stage presence and delivery just somehow make it work.
She did tell jokes!! Just not Bah-Dum punchline ones. Very veeeeery subtle and clever with language. You are right, truly talented and naturally hilarious xxx RIP Caroline. Such a legend.
@@stupidhandles Agreed. Completely standard joke formula. People seem to have been thrown off because...well I'm not sure but maybe because she doesn't pause at the end of a joke?
True although not much competition. I've seen Jo Brand hundreds of times on TV and never laughed once. Sara Milligan is just like any common and dumb girl you'd meet in any pub in the North of England.
I almost cracked a rib watching one episode of Mrs Murton. The most I've ever laughed in my life and doubt will ever do so again. She was just naturally funny.
I loved the bit about she likes it when you're driving on a main road and you let someone in from a side road and they give you a little thank-you wave . . . ,'So if I've got nothing to do in the afternoon, I go out and drive along main roads and let people in.'
The one and unique Caroline Aherne, I watch you over and over and never fail to crease up laughing....your legendary natural intelligence and professional humour will live forever
Such an awkwardly cute and funny persona she created in her act. Takes courage to not just do jokes and go in a different creative direction (and succeed in it).
I was shocked when I heard the news of Carolines death back in the day, along with Victoria Wood, it was heartbreaking to lose two of the finest Comediennes Britain has ever produced, both Northern legends.
That's the clever bit though, it was a routine - it was all carefully written and scripted; it was her delivery that made it seem so natural and improvised.
When Caroline and Craig Cash created "The Royle Family", one of the VERY BEST TV comedies of all time was born. In my view of the last 20 years, only "The League of Gentlemen" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" are on the same inaccessible par. I LOVE you, Caroline. You will not be forgotten ... and thanks to you, Carl, for this precious upload.
Mrs Merton and Royle Family are 2 of the funniest shows to be made. You never hear her mentioned much but she was such a big part of my childhood. Fast Show as well. Miss her!
She was a genius. I've been watching lots of videos of her in the last few weeks. This is unusual as she didn't do much stand up as herself - it seems she had a nose job at some point - and the blond hair really suited her. Thanks for uploading this. RIP.
Totally unique, a very special and wonderful person. A rare talent that sadly left us decades too soon. Just like this weekend we lost another comedic genius and kind soul.
I have lived outside of UK for a long time and accidentally stumbling on her standup comedy gigs, I was happy to enjoy her great humour. Then shocked to find she has gone too soon..... only 52. At 64, I find it quite numbing to see someone who was born after me and died before me. (I am still going... more or less!)
I have never seen Caroline do stand up. This clip made my night. Miss her fantastic talents. To be honest it is a stream if anecdotes but that is what makes it stand out. Why be like all the others???!!! Not Caroline. Quirky and funny. I laughed so much at this. Her delivery is great.
I was thinking the same thing: Just nothing clever about swearing or vulgarity. And that was the secret of the The Royle Family.....it was there...BUT!.... Never overdid the gentle vulgarity of everyday folk....never took it to extremes. Thanks for the laughs Caroline....RIP.
was just thinking the same thing, no comparison to someone like Sarah Milligan who in my opinion is vulgar and not funny. Caroline Ahern was such a talent, The Royle Family a work of art
One of the funniest women of that, or any generation. She could probably tell these stories for hours! Mrs Merton allowed her to inject more bite into her comedy, and The Royle Family more warmth. Caroline (and Craig Cash, of course, who made both those shows with her) was amazing.
I have been re-watching most of Mrs Merton recently. It is superb. It is really funny, the interactions with guests and the audience are brilliant. It is so impressive how sharp her mind is. I read the other day that she got nine grade As in her O Level exams-not surprising.
huge shock hearing poor girl had passed away....she wrote for so many comedies,What a year for so many artists passing away. She had cancer in her eye years ago, then her bladder....R.I.P caroline.
She was funny as. But more importantly, she was a family member. And her loss as sad as it is for us will be massive for the really special people in her life. But thank you for making life seem like an interlude in a play. You are a shining star. , nice one. ❤💙
She was a genius. I grew up in greater Manchester and the first time I saw the Royale Family I didn't realise it was comedy as my family and everyone else I knew as a kid were identical. Mrs Merton again was a perfect portrayal of my granny and other ladies of that generation from the North West.
Caroline was such a funny woman yet she lived a normal life (no ares and graces with her) a lovely Manchester girl (I'm from Liverpool)... so sad that she left us so early, always missed.
An absolute genius. The Royle Family was astounding when it came out; no puns, jokes or studio audience but a brilliantly written observation and the perfect cast. Gone way, way too soon. Sleep well, Caroline. Thanks for all the laughs.
I remember watching Caroline on the fast show&she was incredibly distinctive &talented..loved her in Mrs Merton& the royale family.... so missed for her comic genius...how wonderful were you, Caroline.....
@@martinworld7214 The thing is that because some people find her funny and relate to her TV work, they automatically take her side in an issue of domestic abuse which they don't have any clue about the guilt of the partners on either side.
I watched this when it was broadcast (I was 13). Always remembered the jokes but wasn’t familiar with her at the time. Was stunned to find this video and find it was Caroline Aherne.
That “She didn’t get the point of it at all” is one of the best lines but I think the crowd miss it because they’re already in stitches. Probably the best stand up routine I’ve ever seen and there’s not a single joke. I could cry about her not being here any more as if I knew her. Bless her.
Brilliant, I had not seen her standup, she really had this character perfected, it must be so difficult to do. She always made me laugh and she had the rarest of talents because her humor reached all ages
