The world has been designed with a male bias in ways we may not notice at first but once you crunch the data, as Caroline Criado Perez has, you begin to see it everywhere. She popped in to show how toilets, transport and even the mobile phone in your hand are inconveniencing, harming and even causing the deaths of women across the globe.

Yo, okay so I’m a 20 year old white male out of Australia. I just want to put that out there first because I feel like most negative comments have come from men, and I want other men to know that I understand where you are coming from in the comments. However, I’ve read the first few chapters which have been really eye-opening. I’m not quite sure any of these blokes have actually read the book. And I encourage you to do it. Because literally almost all of these hate comments seem to come from men who haven’t read it. It’s quite sad as I can see now why “feminists” come off as hating men. Because of comments that completely disregard the facts of this book and go straight to insulting Caroline. Basically trying to write-off her opinion before they actually listen in. A lot of us are completely unaware because we don’t experience it. Anyways. Super interested to finish this book. I highly encourage you to pick it up. I challenged you to really read it and not just comment something. The book is not going to make you feel evil. Don’t be so quick to judge a woman with an opinion.

Feminism is in fact about man hating. It has always existed since the beginning of feminism. I urge you to check out the declaration of sentiment in 1848. Besides, Caroline is not a reasonable person herself either, she accuses any women who criticize her suffering from internalized misogyny. She even attacked white men just simply because they're white.

25 year old male from Australia here too! It's a great book and also echo your sentiments about how many men are closed minded to hearing about this stuff (including me when I was 20), so it's awesome to hear how willing you are to challenge those narratives at a young age!

Man 35 years old here. I can easily be irritated by this theme also, but I usually then think of my mom, my sister and/or other women in my life that I love and care about and then it kind of makes more sense to take an interest. Another thing I think would be a positive step for us all would be for men to stop being so sensitive and stop thinking that women are trying to attack us as men, and think more that they are attacking the issue. And for women I think it would be a good starting point to not think that men did this all on purpose rather it happened more randomly because of all the personality differences between the sexes that pushes men toward jobs that builds and engeneer stuff and women toward people and jobs that are more for dealing with people, on avarage. We should emphesize working TOGETHER more than working against eachother because we will all benefit waaaay more from that I think. Anyway, my 2 cents.

@nono meme No one has the right to demand anything from anyone else. If women are being underserved by products that exist, why don't women take advantage of this market opportunity to create a product that's better for women? The implicit assumption seems to be that only men can solve these problems, and that it's the responsibility of men to eliminate any and all inconveniences that women face. This is a silly and myopic perspective that can only arise from an incredible position of privilege.

I'm about half way through the book and have recomended it to many of my friends. The book is eye opening and somewhat frustrating. Some of the things listed I don't agree are problems, but many things are very unequitable and we should as a society try to address them. The challenge is that these fixes come at a cost. Renovating bathrooms so they are more equitable costs time and money. Who pays for that, the small business the tax payers etc... Whereas using both 50th percentile male and female crash test dummys in future vehicle designs wouldn't fix existing cars but it would make new cars more equitable. The question becomes which problems do we prioritize moving forward.

I wonder if you don't agree that they are problems because they are not a problem for *you* - as a male? I'm not being inflammatory, just posing a sincere question. Some things don't seem like a big deal until we have to deal with them personally - like how awful pavements are for buggies - especially double-buggies when you have twins. Or being in a wheelchair and how you feel you're in everyone's way, and also get ignored at the same time. It's the old adage, I think - when we know better, we do better...

I think we may be confusing two issues. 1) just because something is bigger doesn't mean it is sexist or designed to favor male gender. The same way something that is smaller isn't sexist or designed to favor female gender. There are other factors that influence size like screen resolution and visual display. 2) just like car companies "should" use both male and female crash test dummies, phone companies "should" use both male and female hand size models when determining cell phone button layout and size for thumbs and finger interfaces.

I have a friend who's a feminist who asked me to read this. I think it's great that I can escape my personal bubble, but the book really seems to hate me for being a man, which makes reading it a bit of a struggle. The issues addressed in it seem to be looking for inconveniences for women. The same as you can go look for inconveniences for men. So far it hasn't really been able to convince me yet, but it does teach you new things so don't disregard it straight away.
@zwergstein2152
@zwergstein2152 4 года назад
I think she mentions it a bit in the video that they are not hating men or suggesting malign dealings. But rather that due to the fact that men are more likely to be in engineering and design positions of power that they sometimes neglect fundamental differences between men and women. This leads to them inadvertently designing for themselves because they forgot to consider women's differences in physiology and behaviour (innate or because of societal roles). It helps no one if men feel personally attacked, it is merely bringing to attention the fact that women differ and that those differences are rarely taken into account, inconveniencing women.

Men are more likely to have alcohol and drug addiction issues. Men are more likely to die in war. Men are more likely to die at work (i.e. police officers, miners, firefighters). Men are more likely to suffer from homelessness. Men serve more jail time than women for the same offenses and also make up a majority of prisoner population. Men have a lower life expectancy than women. Men are more likely to be a victim of homicide. Maybe we should just give up fighting for equality and safety and carry on getting injured or even dying or being murdered in this mad shit of a world, because those white men haven’t realised that when they say gender neutral they actually mean male...! There's almost too much here to pick apart but I I'll start and finish with your staggering out of step notion of what it means to be a woman in the 21st century - that should have been your first research project, so go away, do it again and do it better.

@julianbingham3999

@Everybody Nobody I'm neither sexist nor patronising this is woefully poor research simple as that. What the author has done is to fall into the standard feminist trap. The woman she is describing as having all these issues is a woman from the 1970's this then allows her to hammer home a false message about bias where this is none. It's a standard feminist technique so ingrained in feminist theory that most don't even see it anymore and I'm including men in that. You choose the clothes you wear but it's men's fault that there aren't enough toilets...seriously? You're only 5'4" but it's men's fault you have to sit too far forward in the car, - I've been laughing at that one for weeks, I've a male friend who is 5'2" he's clearly doomed...no wait he's never been in an accident, what a sexist bigot he is. What feminists have done is to create a world where women are always victims even when they are not; a world where every issue must be drawn back to the world functioning in a malecentric way therefore excluding women. It's a tired and outdated cliche and has little if any baring on the real world. Are there no women engineers? Or are there no female architects or car designers? Do you really think that multi-million dollar industries have not stopped to think about 'women's issues'? Laughable. And your only recourse when faced with a perfectly valid academic observation is to play the 'sexist patronising' card, staggering, just staggering.
@julianbingham3999

@Everybody Nobody Oh dear talk about drawing the world to suit your own pampered little ego. The corporates as you are referring to them have been watching, learning and milking the female dollar for decades, there really is no conspiracy, although you might need to take your feminist glasses off to see that. My small friend as you call him is not singular but stands for the tens of thousands, millions probably of people with short legs, short bodies, short arms overweight and so on who somehow, despite your protests, manage to drive a car. If we follow her logic any driver not built like a crash test dummy is in trouble but that's not the case. You do the research you're the one with the problem. It would be financially ruinous to design cars to come in a size 8*, 12* 14* 16* (*delete as appropriate) not least because you'd all buy the size smaller than you actually are and kid yourself 'Ford always do big sizes, I'm actually a 14 in a Nissan'. Okay that WAS sexist but I couldn't resist. That said however there really is nothing to stop you designing femalecentric car seats and pedal boxes/airbags as after market add ons, If Perez is right you'd make a killing. Craido-Perez used clothing as an issue not me so you need to take that up with her, not me but whilst we're here are you elderly or disabled? You're more likely to be apparently, who knew? I am though, a fully functioning adult who understands how the world works, so look at that, something we agree on. I can also assure you I am not in the slightest bit 'triggered' no one hates me either, I'm adorable. My central point stands: feminists draw their women as 1960's/70's stereotypes to ensure they are victims today. For this I was branded a sexist patronising parody of sexist patronising men in your first post so who was triggered? I'm not at all, as a father of two girls, opposed to feminism quite the contrary I simply think Perez isn't being honest and it's poor research. I didn't say she didn't have point but you were too busy being triggered to notice. Have I said 'triggered' enough? Anyway time has moved on you should too.
