For this latest episode we took the cameras down to Barford Lakes, opting to fish the lake known as Colton, we wanted to try and catch a few Carp on Bread and in particular, popped up bread!
This method has been well documented in the last few years and has recently been responsible for many big match wins! Even though it's a relatively simple method, it still needs to be fished correctly, so in this video we try and demonstrate that and catch a few fish... did we succeed? Watch this latest video to find out all the details!

Excellent videos!!! Thank you from Colorado! We fish carp a lot, normally with massive hooks and corn kernels. I haven't used bread for years but intend to use this method on our next outing. Cheers!

hi, im from germany and hearing british people talk is really relaxing for my ears :D i am using instead of the bait punch some yarn and just tie it around the bread-bunch. works too specially for non-hair-rigs ;) holds too very good. keep going man :) in germany we call it "Petri Heil!" from angler to angler

Nice video, heres' a tip i found out so the bread stays on the hook, and its best to use toasted bread. After taking off the crust round the edges, put the bread in a microwave for about 10 seconds or so until it goes hard (best to start off just for 5 seconds at a time and keep checking it) once its gone nice and hard, roll it with a rolling pin. With this the bread should never come off your hook or hair (especially hair) the only slight drawback is it wont expand in the water, or it will do so but just slowly. I'd like to try this zig rig, how did you make it? cheers.

Hi Steve, have you made the second half of this video? Fishing bread on the method feeder? Would be interesting for me as after a 10 year break from fishing, don't ask....... I am back and new to method feeder fishing. I'd like to see how you adapt it to using bread as bait. I live in Austria now and hope that because the style of fishing over here is a little different I can employ some English tactics to offer the fish something new / different than what they are used to and catch a couple extra fish even when conditions are tough. If you fancy making a European video, I can help with finding the venues and translating for ya! Cheers, Ben
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 7 лет назад
Hi Ben, we haven't made part 2 yet, however I think it's something we'll look at later this year, when the weather cools. Nice to hear from you all the way over in Austria too! Are you fishing for similar species over there? Carp, Tench, Bream etc Haha, thanks for the offer, we'll definetely bare that in mind :-D
@MegaBensley
@MegaBensley 7 лет назад
Yeah I am fishing the lakes near Innsbruck and Salzburg for the same species as I did in England, Carp, Bream, Roach, Rudd and Perch. But, most of the lakes also have Trout in them, Grayling and Char. There are plenty of Pike and Zander and Sturgeon too although I haven't caught these myself yet. My last session I lost 6 fish, all carp on a waggler setup, fishing quite deep in the shade of a tree, despite the warm weather, I was hoping for some Tench. Anyway, the carp got bigger and bigger but the bites were always very finicky, not typical for big fish. The problem was they kept shaking the hook loose. I think my rod and reel were a bit underpowered as I was expecting single figure Tench not double figure Carp. Is a symptom of a rod that is too soft that you loose lots of fish? Or is it more likely that the hook was simply too small? Thanks again! Ben

Can I just ask: You say at the beginning, "just a normal lead setup, nothing unusual about that". What is a normal lead setup? It can be set a lot of ways???? Is it a free running line running through the lead? Is it on a lead clip tied to a swivel - the same as a standard carp fishing rig? is it just a weight set on the line with shot at either side? Sorry to be a pain. The video is great and very informative, however, that bit you were very brief about and seemingly covered the weight up before we could get a look at it to see. haha. Im sure that wasn't intentional but I'd really like to know how you set it up. Thanks pal, great videos, keep up the good work. Les
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 7 лет назад
Hi Les, no worries at all. The lead set-up that Steve is using utilises a lead clip, like you would if you were carp fishing. I he uses the Guru Lead Clips, as these are designed for match fishing - they're slightly neater and smaller. Hope that helps, tight lines, cheers Chris.

@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 лет назад
Hi mate, you can use whatever size punch you want and them simply pick the hook to match. Perhaps a 6-8mm punch with a size 14-16 hook, that should do the job! :-)
@jtarryohpengyew8173
@jtarryohpengyew8173 7 лет назад
Hi, care to share why you had your reel set to rotate in both direction instead of just in the forward direction. I see you controlling the bail with your finger instead of letting the reel drag to do the job.

We use both the backwind and the drag, it's a personal preference really.

Surprised bread works as a pop up 🤔 presumably it’s because it’s not compressed on at all. Would’ve thought it wouldn’t take too long to sink though
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 3 года назад
You'll be surprised Terry, in water it swells up into a lovely fluffy ball. It doesn't stay on the hook/hair after any form of bite, but it does stay afloat for a good while.

Curious to know if the hook lengths are guru if so what length? I'm giving this ago in the colder months running up to Xmas... Good idea or not? Thanks as per 😎
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 7 лет назад
I think Steve made the hook lengths himself Anthony. If you click the Tackle Box link in the video description you should find the details. :-) As far as lengths go there's no magic answer... it's all trial and error... obviously all lakes vary in depth. Perhaps start 1ft off the bottom and then increase the length until you find the fish. Definitely a great idea in the colder months! Normally when it's cold there'll be a warmer layer of water where the fish are holding up, if you can find this you can often catch them. For some reason they find it hard to resist the bread, I think it's perhaps because its so easy to eat! Tight lines, cheers.

Hi mate not fished my local pond for a year and i went to watch and a few were putting big squares on the hook and were all catching with the bread floating on the surface I tried this but cant get the bread to stay on ,any tips please.
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 8 лет назад
It can be quite a tricky bait to keep on the hook +Geoff Gelder I'd try and use the crusts - there's a bit more substance to a crust when you hook it on. If now try some chum mixers (Pedigree chum) these will float and are alot easier to deal with, can be used in conjunction with a bait band. Hope that helps a little.
@hogawitcha1970
@hogawitcha1970 8 лет назад
Once you have the bread on the hook, slightly nip the bread near the eye, it will stay on longer and don't movethe bread once you've cast out.

@FromTheWatersEdgeTV
@FromTheWatersEdgeTV 10 лет назад
Hi didier .b no we didn't we just used the bread on it's own, it's more of a 'zig rig' style way of fishing, so you don't really use feed you just explore the water column to try and find where the fish are sitting. We did wonder about using bread in/on a method feeder to see if it would work or if it would bring better results. Perhaps we'll try that this winter! :-) Cheers
